Title: Summer Sun Released: 18th March 2012 Recorded: January/February 2012 (Gilbert, Arizona) Length: 4:08 Genre: Pop-rock, Alternative rock Writer: Ryan Williams Producer: Colby Wilson Label: Studio60 The music: Summer Sun is an upbeat rock song by Misery Loves Company and the first single from their Untitled sophomore album. From the off, its easy to see their new sounding shining through. The song does well to channel old school MLC along with the new more alternative sound that the band had been talking about. The song starts as a distorted vocal sings "take me back to the summer sun", which signals a steady guitar rhythm which plays along to the point where Ryan Williams vocals begin on cue with a light sounding drum beat in the background. Williams sings through the verses at an average pace as he gets to the final bar "we'd drink right into the dawn" where the drums build up and the chorus which powers through. The song continues at a much higher tempo and summery rock sound until we reach the verse where we can only hear a steady rhythm from the bass drum and a tambourine along with an acoustic playing lightly in the background. Williams sings through the bridge slowly, before the song sound dies, before Williams shouts "just take me back" and the chorus soars through again. Lyrically the song is upbeat as Ryan Williams describes to us how his favorite summer went, were he and his friends did nothing but have fun. It is all about not having any problems when you were young, and you thought the friends you made would last forever. Comparing to Misery Loves Company's previous releases this is without doubt one of their more upbeat sounding sounds, and it looks like they are going to stay true to their word by not using any electronic sounds. The production from Colby Wilson must not go a miss either, he has created the raw sounding for the band which sounds powerful. It will be interesting to see his take on the bands album and what way it will come out. One thing is for sure though, this song will be sure to divide fans, will they accept them moving to what they call "their natural sound" or should they stick to what they have had success with? Time will tell. Our words: The song is a little rough-edged but it makes me want to take endless road trips with the wind in my face sort of feeling. Its just a really nice song which after it was recorded it was pinned as a single. To us, it means everything.. as friends are the world to us. Back when we were young we didn't care about anything.. just having fun and living carefree. When you start to get older you realize that isn't true, but I wouldn't change anything. If I could give just one piece of advice to any teenagers out there, it would be to enjoy your teenage years and don't take life too seriously. Pretty soon you will have the shit breathing down your neck, but for now... enjoy life. Lyrics:Someone take me back to the summer sunAll the time we smoked our cigarettes, We got a little more than we bargained for Some memories that ill never forget Never experienced anything like this before All the booze that we chugged down All the lips that we rested ours upon Back when we used to love this town We’d drink right into the dawnWe’re alive, in this city tonight We’re going to stay up until night turns to light Cause we’re not going to be young forever, Least we can do is always be together Turn up the radio and forget all your problems, Just swallow up all of them Back in the summer sun, take me back to the summer sunBack when we were only eighteen Things don’t really get any better than that We would get high on your car windscreen Forget everything then go get a new tattoo I’d sneak out my window with the thought to see you All the times I was caught they were the best Thinking back now, oh how we’ve grew I didn’t appreciate that I was really blessedWe’re alive, in this city tonight We’re going to stay up until night turns to light Cause we’re not going to be young forever, Least we can do is always be together Turn up the radio and forget all your problems, Just swallow up all of them Back in the summer sun, take me back to the summer sunI remember when we would stay up late and fight About the silliest of stuff We’d make ourselves sound so tough But we were really dying inside of fright Is that what friendship is? Just come a little closer, ill settle for this Just take me back...We’re alive, in this city tonight We’re going to stay up until night turns to light Cause we’re not going to be young forever, Least we can do is always be together Turn up the radio and forget all your problems, Just swallow up all of them Back in the summer sun, take me back to the summer sun
