Mana Gunray Serpentine profile

Funky fresh greetings to thee, the fine people of the information intertubeway. We're having a lovely early spring here in Calgary, hanging out, drinking hot chocolate, and listening to some sweet sweet new music from a various friends.

Alejandro Mesa's Amarok compositional project released their first collection Anosmian Flowershall last year, to wide-spread acclaim. We are proud to release their breathtaking second observation here, entitled Summertide Cyst - hinting perhaps at the record's darker nature.

Beyond that, MGS return once again with LP #4, Clusters+Splinters, which is a veritable smorgasbord of avant musical styles, delicately/clumsily stitched/thrown together in the cold Albertan winter.

We hope that enjoy these exciting new records as much as we have.

May all that ye wish be thine, verily and with much haste,
Quentin Uderick Iain Phong

UPCOMING RELEASES

A lovely little beach scene, with a bunch of colour filters on it. Also kind of riffing on the Jesu aesthetic. I'm wearing a Jesu t-shirt as I write this. True story.
Amarok – Summertide Cyst
(2xLP/CD)

1. Obelus V (3:42)
2. The Seven Plow Oxen (7:09)
3. Dew Point (2:10)
4. Summer-Tied Sister (8:42)
5. The River Sweats Oil and Tar (5:26)
6. Caribou Mother (22:23)

Just over a year ago, we were fortunate to work with Alejandro Mesa on his Amarok project, bringing together a group of musicians from across Alberta and wider Canada to perform his lengthy drone-oriented compositions.

Following that, Mesa has assembled another programme of material, drawing variously from likes of Theatre of Eternal Music, Sun Ra and Mare. There is a new emphasis on a gritty electric low end, but also an expansion of the raw vibrance on show in Mesa's own hammered dulcimer playing. This is dark and glacial jazz by way of Canadian First Nations and American folk traditions.

2xLP with hand-written graphic score extracts. CD digipack available. Download code with every copy.

This was originally called Cluster/Cloud/Mako/Thorn, but I kind of thought that was a bit of an inelegant title for a record, so I ended up with this.
Mana Gunray Serpentine – IV: Clusters+Splinters
(2xLP/CD)

Side A: CLUSTER
Cloud Cluster a Cardinal Sin/Chambered/Clouded Angelshark/Clustered/Cluster of Bears//And Bear This Cloud to Miss (21:31)

Side B: CLOUD
Cloud Cluster of Wind Pinned to the Card of Fine Art//Death Thorn Yo Blow a Fucking Horn Straight Into the Sky//Cumulonimbus Praecipitatio/"Tut-tut, it looks like rain..."//Cumulus Humilis/Morning Glory/Gathering//Bear a Cloud to Shroud the Clotted Clod Clapping Cloud/Cap a Cop/With a Club, in Jail/Tape a Rat Rape Tape a Tap to Prevent Leakage//Mammatocumuli/Card Shark Shard of Cork (20:29)

Side C: MAKO
Make a Mako Shark Park his Fat Ass Upon the Cloud of Life//Waiter Waiter, I Saw a Sawshark, he's Driving Me Nuts//Mako/Ovoviviparity/"... and we have been from the start"/Clustered Together for Warmth/Can of Tuna/Made out of Mana (19:48)

Side D: THORN
Arcus/Agony of a Starfish/An Anvil/Start of a Star War/Start of a Cartilaginous Fish/End of a Wishing Well/Stink of Seven Dead Skunks in a Crusty Cluster of Shit//And Bear This Thorn to Kiss//One Hundred Years of Sweet Poison Dreams From the Spindle that Pricked You (20:40)

As you may know, I'm in this band. We've been working on this one for a while. We've split this record around four sides of vinyl, four connected but separated large-scale musical forms. Each side is in and of itself a complete musical exercise, though each also references the others.

On side A, we explore drone and long-tones, notes that are held and linger out into eternity. Side B develops this aesthetic into to its logical conclusion, developing into nebulous Pärt-inspired choral pieces. Side C is cut-up collage based music, composed in this way and then cut apart and re-edited back together. Side D dives deep into the murky realms of experimental black metal and then shoots back up to the surface for a light-filled mirror image of this aesthetic.

Also appearing throughout, guest vocalists from the wider Calgary region.

On 2xLP quad-fold, random colours. 2CD digipack also available. Art by Neil Gord. Download code with every copy.

That cloud is anvil shaped, do you see?
Mana Gunray Serpentine – 4.1 Anvil
(7") LIMITED EDITION OF 50

A. An Anvil (Cloud Version: Like I am Struck to Death in the Head by a Great Fucking Hammer Forever) (4:32)
B. Tilt (5:02)

This just in folks, missed the deadline for the newsletter, but here it is now; a new MGS single on marble blue-white 7", limited to 50 copies. Get in there quick because this one won't be around for long.

This limited edition pairs an alternate mix of An Anvil with a first for this band. It's a cover of Scott Walker's Tilt, the title track from his 1995 album, rendered here in electronic and industrial tones.

Marble blue-white 7" only, 50 copies. Art by Neil Gord as per usual. No download code.

Quentin: Well that's ideal, because that's pretty much what MGS strive to sound like.

Quentin: I can assure you, we are only interested in the sea cucumber for scientific reasons. As a side-note, there is no mating call of the sea cucumber, given that the creature lacks the complex anatomy required for vocalisation. The reproductive system of most sea cucumbers is little more than a cloud of sperm and a cloud of eggs mixing in the water around their natural habitat. There is no mating as such.

erich: oh thats what the wiley buggers WANT you to believe. if it ever got out that their mating call makes marvin gaye and barry white sound like an air raid siren, they'd be hunted to extinction.
