NAPTOWN JUKES Looking for a label/Neo-Soul/Strong Vocalists/Grew up listening to soul/jazz music
A R&B and soul musicial talented group from Detriot, Michigan tells us their story tonight exclustivly live on MusicChoice as the spotlight is focused on their past, influences and music. The five vocalists and instrumental players explains their story and how did they form such an group and era that will always be remembered as the new modern day Motown music of Neo-Soul. STAY TUNED! GETTING TO KNOW NAPTOWN JUKES
Interviewer: I discovered these boys in a little small that in the small part of Detriot that the town people use to called Naptown because it was really quiet and friendly people and talented musicial people who there but it was so small that no one really went there to find talent.. these boys grew up there and I have them here and I'm pretty excited to get to know them..? How are you boys?
Micheal: Great.. excited to be here..
Interviewer: How was it living in a small town?
Steven: I mean... who gives a shit? (laughs) It was normal.. I think because the people were so freaking friendly no one didnt really want to come. I mean, you had the really FRIENDLY men and the really friendly woman.. if you know what I mean?
Jake: Shut up Steven.. he's a bit out of there.. I loved it.. It was quiet and I think the amount of people wasnt even over 300. It was small, but it was kind of bittersweet because you knew everyone.
Damian: Good thing we didnt have any murders because I would have been died a long time ago..
Trey: It was horrible for me because no one was openly gay because if the pastor find out, it was like damage to hell. (laughs) No, we are just kidding. My mother knew everyone so it was a little a little family.. I guess you can say.
Micheal: It was a small, but fun..Interviewer: Did it ever get boring? I know a small town, it isnt much to do..?
Trey: Are you talking about the very lame dances we use to have? Oh gosh- that was torture...
Damian: It did get boring but I had family up in California so as a child, I will always go back and forth to Cali and Detriot so I had to get some new blood once in a while, get some new fresh air.
Micheal: I just really hated the fact that all the adults knew each other and we couldnt do ANYTHING. If you even think to do something stupid or just completly bold, you will get caught and look like a ass at the end of everything.
Damian: By the way, my mom hated your mom. She just thought that they should be friends because she baked extremly well. Sorry, I been waiting to tell you that.
Steven: Jesus..Interviewer: How did all of you meet?
Trey: I met Micheal because honestly I thought he was really cute and when I was growing up, I really had to deal with the pressure of being gay and trying to live and be perfect because my mother didnt approve of it and she thought I was really a devil because in the town everyone was religious, but I really tired of living a lie and being something I'm not and I think that's where music came in for me and Micheal kind of came in and was a good friend to me..
(Damian laughs)
Trey: What's funny?
Damian: HAHAHAHAHAHAHA! That was freaking epic.. so what kind of friends were you two?
Micheal: Damian dont.. I mean.. I had the phrase of sexuality and curiousy.. but at that time when Trey was always such a loner, I really wanted to tell him that I was there.. and my mom knew his mom and it was kind of a respect.. because we grew up together and it was already so hard for him to live with a deep secret like that so I came in and was a friend..
Steven: My dad was a drug addict when I was 12 and Jake's father was also a drug addict and both our fathers went into rehab and we really was the kind of guys that took the anger and the depression out on people and started to do bad in school and disrespecting the mom and we just went WILD after the age of 13, so we kind of connected that way and we both played guiter.
Jake: And being in a small town where everyone knows each others business didnt make it no matter and it was pressure... walking around and everyone that really was on their high horse will look down and judge you because of family issues.. I played guiter and also wrote music so I knew that was the escape.
Damian: These guys were just amazing people and I have such a family that was so judgemental and so so perfect, I mean, they thought they were so I had to find friends that liked me for who I was and not what my family wanted me to be.Interviewer: How did music bring you guys closer?
Steven: Oh shit.. here goes the little " emotional questions"
Trey: (very girly accent) do you always have to be an butthole to people?
Steven: Maybe if I didnt have a homo sitting next to me, I wouldnt be.. you know you was very bold in high school..
Jake: ENOUGH. (smiles) I think music bought us closer because we were really the outkast of the towns high expections.. and very proper.. and very religous.. we didnt want that shit.. we wanted something real and something we enjoyed doing. Like my father wanted me to be a lawyer when I loved to write music and sing. We were the outkast of the " perfect life" and we grew by finding yourself and finding what makes us happy in music.
(Damian laughs dramtically)
Damian: I think for me was that escape.. At a young age, my mother wanted me to be smart and learn what I needed to, to really be successful so I decided to study music in high school. I loved to perform. I was the class clown and I was the kind who put a smile on everyone's faces-
Micheal: Yuck..
Damian: Anyway.. so I wanted to perform with unique and creative music. I wrote and I played guiter and piano. I wanted to get away from that life..
Micheal: I was always the boy who wanted a band.. wanted to go on tour.. go to hotels and tour the world.. I had big dreams and I wanted the dreams to come true and music bought me to these guys because I felt we had such an story to tell and such talent to show and I wanted to give music lovers what they wanted in soul music. Interviewer: What was the big interest that you boys had in soul music?
Micheal: It was the passion in the music.. the flow.. the voices that you really felt the emotion.. you felt the pain of the lyrics..
Damian: It was how creative the lyrics were and how creative the music arrangements.. I think, for me.. it was the power of the art..
Steven: It was the feeling of the slow music.. it made me feel relaxed and I needed that knowing I was on drugs and I was like a high kite most of the time.
Trey: Shut up Steven... you know.. soul music made me horny and I knew that was a good skin because I will get so excited hearing it and in plus, the whole town was full of jazz and blues. Detriot is the town.. the city of dreams.. motown and soulful music so we grew up listening to it.
Jake: Soul music makes you feel out of this world.. and the instrumentals that made you feel like it was story being told.. it was something that made the music REAL.. something that made the voices different.. unique.. it made us feel like it was hope.. made us feel like no matter what we go thought.. music and soul showed us someone is going thought the same thing or even worser..

Interviewer: So who all this idea to start a group?
Micheal: When I was about 14, I had dreams of becoming a big music producer and I knew that my parents wasnt going to spend me to school for that so I really wanted to share my talent of creating and writing music to the world so when I met these guys- it was perfect.. I wanted to create a group of talented men and make good music.. spread the sound that inspired us so much growing up.
Steven: While at first, I was like, " this fucking dude is out of his mind if he think I'm going to be controlled by him.." then we had a couple of rehearsal. I practiced my instrumentals, also being bass tone.. and I really loved the chemistry and vibe we had as as a whole.
Jake: We kind of really gave each other energy so every time something fresh will come up; we will get some excited because we were so passioned about performing that it wasn't nothing that we couldn't do as a group.. we were unlimited to what we could do. We pushed and pushed until we made it better..
Damian: I think, for me, it was just doing something I loved. I didnt want fame or anything.. I just wanted to do something I loved.. to wake up and enjoy what I do. So when he had the idea- I thought it was perfect.Interviewer: Micheal.. what makes this group so special and why should people listen to it?
Micheal: You know.. every interview and person asks that but I think people the passion we have.. you hear the passion, you hear the love inside in the music.. I think what makes us special is US.. we are what makes us special.. the talent we have is special and no one cant take that away and all the aspects we do have we give that to music and make it US..
Steven: Aw... that was sweet.. but it was soo fake..
Damian: SHUT UP STEVEN! I been holding in this secret for a while.. why are you so jealous..? Maybe because you are not thoughtful like Micheal..
Steven: No actually, I am because I'm a songwriter and writers have to be thoughtful asshole.
Trey: That sounds amazing...
Jake: Anyway Miss.. you know whatever this world brings us.. we are in for the taking. The best thing and the commitment we stuck too is always be original.. never go where or what the industry whats you to be because that's when the soul dies.. that's where the passion slowly goes away.. so how we play, sing and make music is the way we will keep because it's makes us happy and we feel that it will be a iconic one day. So whatever we do- we stay true to US.. as a group.
Steven: (laughs) that was so cute Jake. Interviewer: Who inspires you guys?
Damian: GEEZZZZZ! I love Earth, Wind and Fire. My grandparents use to always play them in the jukebox down in the blues club when I was young and I was in love with the flow of their voices.. like how smooth and slow their music was.. the rock.. the roll of soul. It was so exciting to me...
Steven: Piss off Damian.. Earth, Wind and FIRE..? Who are you El Green?
Trey: oh my god! I love him.. great voice.
Micheal: The Isley Brothers... Maze.. Frankie Beverly.. We whites got some taste too.
Steven: We never said you did.
Micheal: You're white too?
Steven: Actually cheesecake..
(shocked)
Steven: I'm mixed... Irish and white.. (smiles)
Jake: It's not what inspires me.. it's how the music makes me feel... that inspires me..
Interviewer: One day you guys will like to be...
Trey: DUH.. Superstars....
Damian: Icons.. and Trey..
Micheal: Legends.
Steven: ONE BIG HAPPY FAMILY.. NOT! I just wanna be that guy that gets a little fame.. drink my life away and then have a lot of kids.. like the playboy mansion owner.
Trey: Why dont you straight boys have class..? GOSH!
Steven: I have a lot of class.. (looks down)
(Micheal laughs)
Interviewer: What do you guys do to prepare for what may be coming for you..? The attention.. the fans..?
Steven: Oh gosh lady, you said as if someone is coming to kill it..
Trey: Or KILL ME! I'm the gay one here...
Micheal: We just stay humble.. and be yourself.. that's the only way people will accept you.. being yourself.. staying humble and having fun.
Steven: You just have the answers to everything huh?
Damian: I mean.. he was in debate in school.. GOSH.. I use to hate you.. you talked so proper and so elegent.. it drove me fucking nuts. I wanted to beat your ass...
Micheal: So why didnt you?
Damian: Because I knew I would have gotten beat up and that's pretty embrassing.
Jake: What a sissy... Interviewer: How is the most excited when it comes to the music?
All: Micheal...
Trey: He is a little fag when it comes to the music.. AND OH MY GOD, when we finish recording.. he is like jumping around, like screaming like a LITTLE girl and hanging all of us.. I mean.. I dont mind, but let me know when you want some baby.
Micheal: Will you stop.. like stop?
Steven: I think I'm the most excited.. because that day we finished the rehearsal and it went perfect and I went to give your mom a big kiss.. oh yes.. she loved it..
Micheal: No.. she didnt.. she has a big red spot on her cheek the next day.. I told you to stop messing around these little whores.. you know you can catch something?
Steven: Let me guess..?
Trey: Aids you ass.Interviewer: How old are you guys..?
Micheal: 20.. fresh out of grad school. (he acts proud)
Steven: Also straight out of fag school... 21.
Trey: I am 21.. young and fresh.. ready to mingle.
Damian: Stop it with the gay remarks Trey.. I'm the oldest.. 22
Jake: I am 21. We are all around the same age.. it's weird because all of us birthdays are close.. plus we were all either behind a grade or in the same grade.. weird right..?
Steven: No that's not weird.. it's just you and your supernatural ass..
Trey: (smiles)
Interviewer: When can we hear music?
Micheal: Very soon.. we wont keep you guys waiting for too long.. promise you that.
Jake: You stop making promises Micheal.. you know you are not good with these? Remember when you PROMISED Rose Bach that you were going to take her out to the prom and you totally just left her alone all night along..? with Trey..?
Micheal: That was only because Trey told me he wanted to try something new..
Steven: I KNEW IT! YOU ARE STRIAGHT.. YES YES YES!
Trey: Try something new as in try to get her brother.. that was such a handsome guy..
Micheal: Yeah.. did you ever get him?
Trey: Yep.. behind the school's parking lot.. it was heaven.
Damian: That just ruined my sweet dreams..
