NADIA BERRY PERFORMS AT THE GROVE IN L.A.
Nadia's band walk onto the stage in front of an excited audience at L.A.'s The Grove, getting themselves into position. It may not be Nadia herself, but they cheer regardless. The sight of something happening on stage finally after the long wait is enough of an excuse. On a relatively small stage with nothing but her band to accompany her, it's one of the first times the audience is getting the chance to see a more stripped back Nadia, without all the theatrics and dancers that usually come with every performance from GirlSpice. This time, she's on her own without the other girls, ready to perform her own music, it's now all down to her own abilities. With a tour just about to kick off with Katie Coyle, this was giving the fans a taster of what to expect on the upcoming gigs.
Once the time comes, Nadia takes a deep breath and then hurriedly walks up the few steps to the stage, she smiles warmly at the loud response. Her wardrobe seems to have adapted more of a rocker chick style lately, dressed in a jacket, casual top, cut off shorts and boots. She grabs the microphone stand and her band instantly move into the start of "Beautifully Broken", one of the more uptempo tracks on the record, with building synths and powerful electric guitar riffs throughout. She places her lips closer to the microphone, beginning the first verse.
She slides her hands down the microphone stand slowly, before taking the microphone out and walking to the side of the stage. She notices boyfriend Ryan Ross Hernandez and best friend Katie Coyle right at the front, she gives them a wink, before making her way to the other side. Skipping to center stage, she places the microphone back in the stand and whips her hair energetically for the short instrumental section just before the chorus begins. When it does, she claps her hands together to get the crowd to join in as they do so, she grins, before holding out the microphone to the fans to sing along.
Belting out the final notes with her notably improved and impressive vocals, putting out this last solo album has clearly never done so much good for her own talents. She might not be dancing around furiously like in a GirlSpice show, but her vocals are more than enough to keep the crowd hooked, it seems Nadia Berry can finally be called a performer now, instead of just an entertainer. Smiling as the song comes to an end, she moves her hair out of her face with one hand and looks out into the crowd, "Thank you" she says gently, before pausing at the cheers back. "It's pretty damn scary up here, and I bet there's a number here who don't even like me. No one can resist a free show, right?" She laughs, before looking down at the front row just below her, "I'd like to give a special shoutout to my boyfriend and best friend who are here right now, I love you guys, and thank you for being there for me."
The little shoutout makes the crowd cheer even louder, knowing they're amongst two musical legends, Nadia nods her head impressed, knowing they'd react in that way. She sits on the edge of the stage and waves directly at a few fans, "I'd play the guitar for this next song if I thought I was good enough, but Jimmy and Tom gonna do this one for me, we're gonna rock out a little," she laughs, moving into a more upbeat, rockier version of "One of Those Days". She closes her eyes for the gentle opening and sways slowly, getting into the rhythm of the song, before the electric guitars come in. However, her vocals remain just as seductive for the performance, just like the studio version of the song. The track has gone onto become known as one of the more sexier songs on the album; the music video for the track gaining great popularity and becoming controversial for the raunchy scenes between herself and Ryan.
She jumps down to the floor, a slight gap between the fans and the stage due to the barriers. She walks up to them, continuing to sing the song whilst touching hands with the many fans who eagerly scream out her name to get her attention. She walks down the length of the barriers and then makes her way back to the stage where the song comes to an end. "You guys are awesome, I sound really American when saying that, but considering I've always loved America, I'm not really too bothered about that," she says, giving the crowd a smile afterwards. To the disappointment of fans who had been waiting hours all day to get as close as they could to the front, she introduces her final song. "This next one is my new single 'Risktaker' and I hope you like it."
Once again, she whips her long, brunette locks in time with the dramatic, fast-paced drums that open the song, jumping up and down excitedly. As the first verse begins, the tempo drops a tad and she stands still, Nadia's vocals sound sweet, while being slightly whispered, she sings the pre-chorus powerfully, belting out each line, before moving into the atmospheric chorus, throwing one fist up in the air. The lyrics to the chorus are delivered almost spoken, but remaining catchy, a bold and confident tone in her voice. Any pre-performance nerves she may have had before have clearly vanished, she looks eager to entertain, and it's clear she's been trying to give her all during the short set.
With dancing becoming such a huge part of her shows with GirlSpice for years, it looks like the dancer in her seems to come out by the more upbeat second chorus, moving her body in time with the music, as one hand grips around the microphone. The audience cheer in response, and she whispers the lyrics for the gentle middle-eight, before moving back into a dramatic final chorus, landing on her knees for the end. She jumps up after a few seconds and takes the time to look behind to her band as she claps them, "I hope the wait was worth it, I wanna thank you all for taking the time out of your busy lives to watch me perform, this is a dream," she laughs at herself, "I'm babbling, aren't I? Thank you again, and a big thank you to my band! Have a great day." And with that said, she waves to the crowd, and quickly makes her way off stage.
