B I O G R A P H Y

Tisha Jackson (born June 11th, 1989) is an American singer, song-writer, musician, producer, and actress. She was born and raised in Brooklyn, New York. At the age of 5, Tisha began her interest in music when she first knew she could sing. At the age of 8, Tisha was singing in the church choir. By the age of 14 Tisha began singing professionally, and to improve her voice began taking vocal lessons. While taking vocal lessons she was taught how to play the piano and guitar. At 15, Tisha began performing at local night clubs in Brooklyn and Manhattan. It was then when she was singing at a night lounge in Brooklyn, New York when she was spotted by a talent scout. The talent scout did not offer Tisha a deal on spot, but instead presented her the opportunity to record a demo with him, so they can send it to record-label executives. With her mother’s approval, Tisha agreed to record the demo as long as it would not affect her school work. Tisha then sent her demo out to all record labels in NYC, and it landed on the desk of Eventual Records Label Executive, Lino. When he heard it, he contacted Tisha immediately and wanted to meet with her. After meeting with Tisha, he offered her a record-deal on the spot, and in 2006 Tisha signed her first recording contract with Eventual Records.

Tisha released her debut album, My First Lesson:Life is too short to give up on your dreams in July of 2007. The album received mixed reviews from critics. Many citing that the music was ‘too mature for the singer’. Sales were also underwhelming due to the lack of promotion of the album. Tisha then put her music career on hold to make a decision on whether she would continue her music or go to college. Prior to graduating in the summer of 2007, Tisha received a scholarship to New York University and planned on majoring in Music at the school’s music program. Tisha thought that going to college and majoring in Music-arts would give her a better preparation for having a successful music career, but didn’t know if she could hold off for so long without releasing any new material. Tisha later passed up her scholarship offer and decided to begin writing for her second studio album.

To get her name out into the public more, Eventual Records brought up the idea of Tisha releasing mixtapes and promotion for her second studio album. Tisha agreed to the idea, knowing it would allow more people in the public to know her name. Tisha released four consexutive mixtapes from the fall of 2007 to the spring of 2008. While recording and releasing street mixtapes, Tisha also was writing and recording for her second studio album, “My Desire 4 Control”. The album was released at the top of 2008 and spawned Tisha’s first Top 10 single, “So Dumb” featuring Daphne Aguilera. The album also proved to be a success receiving favoring reviews from critics, and selling over 1 million copies. Tisha then began writing and recording for her third studio album, ‘Tisha’. This time Tisha enlisted label-mates, and close friends, GirlSpice, to her produce and write for the album. The album scored the Top 20 hit ‘Mr.Heartbreaker’, featuring GirlSpice. The album proved to be another success selling over 2 million copies world-wide.

Fast-Forward to fall of 2008; Tisha released her fourth studio album titled ‘KEEP THE FAITH’. ‘The album received critical acclaim form critics, calling it “her best work yet” and her vocals had been label ‘standouts’. She calls ‘KEEP THE FAITH’ “vocally and creatively some of her best work”.The album sold 5 million copies world-wide, and spawned Tisha’s first No.1 single “Mine Again” featuring Raven of the Thunderwolf’s. The album also spawned a Top 10 featuring, ‘Elle Fame’, titled, “Sexy,Sexy,Sexy”. After ‘KEEP THE FAITH’, Tisha decided to take a break from the industry. She had been touring on the road non-stop from her musical debut in 2007 and decided to take a break to recharge her batteries and become inspired to make new music.

After changing labels several times from Eventual Records, to it’s predecessor Talent Radar Records, to Spice Records, to Metamorphosis Records in a two year span. Tisha finally decided to leave Metamorphosis Records and make Spice Records her home. Tisha signed a new recording contract and began recording her fifth studio album in the summer of 2009. She enlisted good friends, GirlSpice, to help her write and produce the album. On October 27th, 2009, Tisha released, To Whom It May Concern. The album’s title stemmed from the media backlash she had been receiving recent and it was her take on her critics. The album debut in the Top 5 in the United States, and the Top 10 in all other regions. The album spawned two Top 20 singles, “Heartache From Loving You” and “Wherever I Go” featuring GirlSpice. The album went on to sell 2.1 million copies world-wide.

In 2010, Tisha began recording her sixth studio album. She wanted the album to be more personal so she wrote and composed all the tracks herself. On March 30th, 2010, Tisha released the double disc, ‘I AM…BEAUTIFULLY HUMAN’. The album received critical acclaim and was nominated for Best Album at that year’s IMA/Birdie Awards. The album spawned a Top 5 hit “I Get Lonely”, peaking at No.2 followed by the Top 10 Hit “Between Me & U” peaking at No.8. The album was remixed and Re-released and titled ‘I AM…Beautifully Human Remixed & Reloaded and was released on June 22nd, 2010 and debut at No.1 on the U.S.A charts giving Tisha her first No.1 album. The album spawned the No.1 single, ‘All Over the World’ and the Top 5 hit, ‘Clap!Clap!Clap!. Tisha also set out on her biggest World Tour yet to promote the album with the, I AM…Beautifully Human World Tour. R&B star Alicia Lena performed as the opening act.

Accomplishing her goals one at a time and coming out with music, that was creative and well received by critics, Tisha felt that she needed a break. She used her six month break to begin writing for her seventh studio album. Tisha teamed up once again with longtime friends and collaborators, GirlSpice to help her write and produce the album. This time, Tisha went deeper with this album. She explored places she would normally allow people to go. Sure in her six year career she accomplished a lot. She released six albums, sold 75 million records, traveled the world, and was known as a creative innovator, but she felt that the world still didn’t quite understand who she was. So she began recording her new record. Tisha then signed a deal with Junction Records for a reported 80 million dollars, the largest any female had been paid since, Mariah Carey’s deal in 2001 with Virgin Records. Tisha recorded her seventh studio album from October of 2010 to April of 2011.

That April Tisha graced the cover of Vogue Magazine, becoming the youngest person to ever be on the cover. She also released her debut single off her seventh studio album. The single, ‘That’s How You Want It’ featured rising rap stars, Jay-C and Monte Carlos. The song was critically praised and debut at No.2 on the Weekly Airplay Charts as well as No.2 on The Digital Charts. Tisha followed up the success of her first single off the record with the release of ‘History’ featuring GirlSpice, the single debut at No. 2 on the Weekly Airplay Charts as well as No.2 on The Digital Charts. The single went 3xplatinum proving to be one of Tisha’s biggest hits. ‘History’ was also critically acclaimed by critics, many considering it the best girl power anthem ever.

Tisha revealed in May of 2011 that the title for her seventh studio album would be, ‘Reveal’. She titled it Reveal, because she wanted to reveal herself more to her fans, so they could get a better understanding of her. She also looked at the album as a way for her to peal layers of herself. ‘Reveal’ was released on June 28th, 2011 to critical acclaim, critics and Tisha herself considered it her best work to date. The album featured a more urban vibe, infusing R&B, Hip-Hop, and Pop elements. The album was looked at as one of the best R&B albums of 2011.

When ‘Reveal’, was released it was predicted to debut at No.1. Instead it debut at No.12 on The Heat Top 20 Charts. The album sold 173,000 copies in it's first week, which isn’t a low number, but it surprised many of her fans, her label, and Tisha, herself. Tisha blamed the sales on her label, Junction Records, saying they provided no money for her album promotion, and cut all promotion when it came time to release the album. Tisha also provided court documents stating that she and several other music retailers lost close to millions of dollars when the label back-lighted her project. Investigators were hired and it the case was sent to trial. The case received moderately a short trail, with jurors deliberating for a month, and with evidence disclosed from the investigators of the case, it was proven that members of the executive branch of the label had embezzled money from promotional campaigns from Tisha and Junction Records. Tisha and her label received all money lost in a court ordered from the judge, and the members of the executive branch were fired and are now serving time in jail.

Tisha proved to have the LAST LAUGH with ‘Reveal’. The album later peaked at No.2 on The Heat Top 20 Charts, and has sold six million copies worldwide since its release in 2011 becoming her most successful album yet, and was one of the best-selling albums of 2011. Tisha went on her biggest tour yet in November of 2011 and performed in the United States, United Kingdom, Asia, Africa, South America, and Canada. The tour has grossed 80 million dollars in ticket sales so far. Tisha plans on Re-releasing the ‘Reveal’ on April 24th, 2012, titled ‘Reveal, Revealing, Revealed’.

CHECK OUT TISHA JACKSON'S NEW JUNE ISSUE OF COSMO AFTER THE JUMP

UserPostedImage

It’s hard to believe but Tisha Jackson’s last cover with Cosmopolitan Magazine was three years ago in 2009. The Pop Star was just an up and comer in the music world and that was the true beginning of her reigning success. You can say a lot of things have certainly changed in the entertainer’s life, sure her EVER CHANGING hair is smoking hot fiery red now, she has added more tattoos to her body, but now the girl that we once knew as “The New Girl”, “The Up and comer” has now become “THE IT GIRL”. She comes along with many titles, some know her as “The Princess of Pop”, and many of her fans will consider her, the reigning “Princess of R&B”. But what does Tisha Jackson think of her successes? Tisha says, “I don’t think too much about it. Because you’ll find yourself constantly thinking about it and you get wrapped up into yourself, and I’ve never been or plan on being that type of person. I thank God for blessing me tremendously to be living my dreams. But I reflect on it sometimes but not often because that wouldn’t be me being myself, that would be a different person other than Tisha , and I am not interested in than that.

Some would call that a very modest answer. In today’s society and especially in the music industry, we’ve come across a lot of people with talents and many without who boast about record sales and many other things people dream to have, so it was kind of interesting to come across an artist who appreciates what she has accomplished but still humbles herself and focuses on what she calls “The important things in life”.

It was a cold February afternoon when Tisha walked onto a set in New York City to do a summer shoot. She didn’t demand anything, but heat on set was a MUST. Tisha walked onto the set like a champ, just her publicist, wardrobe-stylist, and hair-stylist by her side. Not much of an entourage for a celebrity. We asked her what kind of music she would like to have us play during the shoot. She smiles and without hesitation says, Janet Jackson, the woman she considers her idol and “one of her great inspirations in her career”. Tisha also insist on throwing Mariah Carey into the mix, a woman who Tisha sonically considers “One of the greatest voices of all time, and the greatest voice we have now”. Music is flowing with Janet and Mariah in the background and Tisha is finally dressed and ready to shoot the cover of her Cosmopolitan issue. Tisha playfully plays with the camera and switches her wardrobe 3 times for different spreads in the shoot. After 5 hours of shooting, Tisha take a break and relax, her red fiery hair slicked back down to her back. She has a robe on and is sipping tea to preserve her voice for her World Tour. She then says sweetly, “Let’s start this interview”.

Cosmopolitan: So, Tisha how have you been? Can you believe it’s been three years since you’re last Cosmo cover?!

Tisha: Yeah, it seems like yesterday. I remember the last time I did a shoot with you guys was the “To Whom It May Concern” era, back in ’09.

Cosmopolitan: What has changed in your life since then?

Tisha: Ummm, a lot. A lot has definitely changed. Musically I can say I am just in a completely different space. A better one at that because, I was being the best artist I knew I could be at that time. I was allowing everything going on personally with myself to take a negative toll on my work. Another thing that has change since then is I’ve traveled the world, I know more, I have a better since of my surroundings and now and a more liberal feeling towards other cultures and things that are different and others may have conservative views on. I can also say, now I am a better performer compared to then. So a lot has shifted me as a person since then.

Cosmopolitan: How has it felt to just finish your tour, all 74 shows, no cancelling or rescheduling any shows?

Tisha: Amazing!! Believe me there were times when I thought I wasn’t going to make it and I was like, “I wanna go home, Let’s just go home”. But when I think about all the fans and how they come out every night to party with me and have a good time, it makes me feel better. So without the fans and my crew I couldn’t have completed it. And the grace of God because touring can be tiresome.

Cosmopolitan: Is it hard being on the road constantly?

Tisha: (Looks at the interviewer with big eyes) Yes! Are you kidding me? You’re never stabilized, there are sometimes when you might stay in the same city for a weekend so that is more relaxing because there is less of a go get up and do this and that feeling. But you’re constantly on the go, and you have to make sure everything is perfected because if one thing isn’t and you don’t catch it or you’re not able to improvise then the entire show can be over.

Cosmopolitan: So, you are about to re-release your multi-platinum selling album, Reveal. Can you tell us more about that and a release date?

Tisha: Yes. The re-release is coming out June 18th. It’s titled Reveal, Revealing, Revealed. And basically it’s just an extension of the Reveal album with some bonus material. I recorded six new tracks for the record so I am excited about that. And two of them are already set to be released as singles.

Cosmopolitan: The Reveal album has carried you out over a year now. How does it feel to be still promoting the same album from last year without having to garner any attention with making a new record?

Tisha: I feel accomplished. Reveal didn’t start out how I planned, but initially everything fell into place and here we are a year later still promoting the same record. I think if you deliver what your fans ask and you know what’s true to you and you stick to it works out in the end. And that’s what I think has made Reveal continue its momentum.

Cosmopolitan: So last year this time, you were promoting History with GirlSpice and Stephanie Fierce. You guys delivered a video but we’ve never seen you perform the song live, will we ever?

Tisha: You know, I just think we’ve never found the time to perform it. The song is still relatively new so I am not putting a performance with GirlSpice and me off, but I wouldn’t be caught dead performing with Stephanie Fierce. *Smiles sarcastically and rolls eyes*

Cosmopolitan: What?! Are guys still fighting? I know some shade was recently thrown but we didn’t know you guys were serious.

Tisha: Well I think that’s the problem, when so much people consider you a joke then you’re never gonna be taken seriously? And I am not talking about myself, so that says a lot without saying anything at all. And I am not fighting with her, there is no fight. I just don’t associate with people who think they’re better than society when in actuality they look like a fool. Moving on.

Cosmopolitan: Yes, moving on. Now you get a lot of attention for your body. What is your favorite part(s) of your body?

Tisha: I love my legs. I work hard for them in the gym, but my mother has very strong legs as well. I like my butt and the weight it has on it. Haha. I laugh but I am serious. And I like my eyebrows because of how thick they are. But there was a time when I can say I didn’t like anything on my body, but to know what I love on my body now makes me feel more like a woman.

Cosmopolitan: When do you feel most beautiful?

Tisha: When I am about to go out and have fun. Whenever I get dressed to hang out with friends and have a good time I feel beautiful. Also when my hair is washed and done, I think every woman can agree with me on that. And when I am fresh out of the bathroom after a nice long bath or shower and my face is clean and stripped of make-up.

Cosmopolitan: Name one female and one male you’d love to collaborate with?

Tisha: Well definitely one female would be, Cassie Valentine. She’s a vocal beast. I would love to do a duet with her, something pop and soulful. And a male collaboration would have to be, Laurence Wilson, even though I collaborated with him on one of his records, I’d still like to have my own with him. I love him.

Cosmopolitan: So you’ve been but into so many categories. Some people call you “The Princess of Pop” others call you “The
Princess of R&B”. What do you consider Tisha Jackson?

Tisha: I hate when people categorize me in a box. I think as artist we should try to take risk and explore our options in other genres. Now I say that, but shit, I don’t mind people giving me those titles. Haha. *Tisha says jokingly*(Tisha and the interviewer laugh at the same time). But why can’t I do a pop song without saying she’s pop, or do an R&B song without them saying she’s R&B. I’ll say it like this, my genre of music is whatever I am singing at that moment.

Cosmopolitan: Well put. What’s next for Tisha Jackson?

Tisha: More music definitely. I am taking a break though. After the re-release of Reveal I am going to take a little break from music just to recharge my batteries and let the creative juices flow. But I love music so you can always expect that.

Cosmopolitan: It was so nice catching up with you, and we can’t wait to see you again!

Tisha: Thank you guys so much!

Tisha Jackson has always shared her admiration for legendary Pop-Icon, Janet Jackson. Tisha has stated before, that if it were not for Janet she and many of her musical contemporaries would not be where they are today. Tisha has looked up to Janet since she was six years old and credits her as her biggest influence in her music. With Janet’s birthday approaching, next week May 16th, Tisha decided to pay tribute to her “idol” in a different way by writing an open letter to Janet letting her know how greatly appreciated she is not by only her but by the world.
Read the syrupy sweet message below!

Dear, Janet

I was thinking to myself recently, and I thought about you. I always think about people I love so you’re a frequent thought. But I was thinking about you and I began to wonder, “Does Janet know how much she is appreciated”? I feel you do, but maybe the reason why the thought came in my head was because of how humble you are. In case you didn’t know, I appreciate you a great deal. You are someone who inspires me to be a better woman. I look how you handle certain things in your life and career and admire how you do so. You and your music have inspired me to be stronger, to think wiser, and to think more differently. Without you I don’t know if I would have the chance that I do now to cement myself in this industry the way I want to if it weren’t for you. I and many of my contemporaries and counter-parts owe you a thank you! Because you’ve paved the way for a lot of us. As an African American woman I feel that you’ve broken down barriers for me, and it takes a woman with a lot of courage to do that for a generation. I thought this would be an early birthday gift in a way when I first began writing this letter, but then I realized it is just another way for me to say, thank you and I love you!

Always with love,
Tisha

OOC: In case you guys don't know, I am a huge fan of Janet Jackson and I thought this would be a cool and different way to tribute her. I don't who's Janet Fans on here but if you are please leave a comment or something about her or the letter.
