Prior to the performance by The Devil You Know, a video begins to play:
Video wrote:“Its just been crazy you know? Just completely out there.” states Matthew, the frontman of the band as the camera rests on him, trying his hardest to look serious while he sits in his hotel room. He then breaks down chuckling, “Was that a good shot? Maybe we should re-do it?” He asks innocently.
A cut and a re-take of the shot begins, “You know working with Scott, seeing great acts day in, day out. It’s just insane to be here.” He starts laughing again as the video cuts to the band practicing inside a warehouse, Matt’s voice-over playing, “We haven’t really gotten to talk to the other bands but you know, they don’t really seem that bad to us. I’m just excited to be here and excited to potentially win.”
The Devil You Know - Your Love, My Death - Lily Cover
@Grey Ghost Music Center - April 29th, 2012 The video comes to a close, and a single spotlight comes alive, shining onto Matthew, who walks to the center of the stage near the microphone, dressed in a black formal suit (complete with bow-tie). “Good evening.” He takes a quick strum of his guitar, “We’re the last band to go and we hope you had a great night, that we’ll be closing out.”
A low bass comes in, each pluck of the chords precise and to the point as Vincent, the bassist for the band, comes out into the light. A guitar can be heard in the background, Lawrence, the band’s second guitarist, comes out into the light. Instead of the song’s original, violin playing and harpsichord, the bass takes both of the parts, replacing it with a traditional surf rock riff (see “Earth Angel/Sleepwalking”).
As the band settles into the groove of the song, Matthew stands before the microphone and begins:
You tore my heart out my chest, and it snapped back/The trap that was there all along
Meander through mazes of darkness, my life fades /Your love has extinguished my soul
Julian enters with his drumming as Matthew himself begins to strum, shaking his shaggy hair along as he sings.
All at once I fall and choke, I can't breathe/ Your love's taken my breath
Thoughts runs deep and blind my eyes/No..fight for life, Your love and my death slowly burn
The drumming dies down after he belts out the word “burn” and he himself stops strumming as the similar tempo of the first verse comes back into play.
Love and my death slowly burn
The tempo from the first verse retakes control of the song.
Bore into my mind, it just niggles, your whispering/Your love just bores into my mind
Darkened delusions, I'm shutting you out of my heart/Crushing, my hopes undermined
The drumming returns and Matthew begins to hop around the stage on one foot as he plays his guitar, not immediately moving into the chorus, instead taking the time out to stop the entire set as the drop into the Chorus begins. “Hold it! Just a moment!”
The crowd cheers in anticipation as the frontman shakes his hair up and down to the absence of music, and the rest of the band run around stage hectically, before all assuming their original positions and going into the chorus.
All at once I fall and choke, I can't breathe/Your love's taken my breath
Thoughts runs deep and blind my eyes, no..fight for life/ Your love and my death slowly burn Love and my death slowly burn
And the band explodes to life, lights exploding all over the place as the band powers into the next part of the song.
(Won't atone) Love and my death slowly burn (Won't atone) Love and my death slowly burn (Won't atone) Your love and my death Love and my death slowly burn
Slowly however, the band begins to die out in-terms of sound, and before long, only Matthew stands, a single spotlight sitting on him as he whispers the final verse.
All I know I can't push you out you engulf my soul/ My Soul. love and my death slowly burn Your love and my death slowly burn
Darkened delusions, I'm shutting you out of my heart,/Crushing, my hopes undermined
All at once I fall and choke, I can't breathe/Your love's taken my breath
Thoughts runs deep and blind my eyes, no..fight for life,/Your love and my death slowly burn Love and my death slowly burn
And with that, the band slowly exit stage left to the crowd’s cheers.
