Karoliena verlinden-vocals.

UserPostedImage
Bettie antonov-vocals,upright bass.

UserPostedImage
Sarah tart-guitar

You would think playing bass for two full time bands would be enough, huh? While i do have 50/50 control over the war bride,i want something of my own. Yet not so much that it would be a solo project. Makes perfect sense, right? I thought so too. Right now there is myself on vocals, and ONLY vocals. Slapping bass in two bands is enough.

Bettie, you may remember from a little band called "bettie and the star chiefs". She's been living aboard the duke of winchester since her band sorta fell apart after one of the members died. A few months ago,she asked me to teach her bass. As you can see,i agreed. Vocally, bettie is one of the best in the buiness. Very jazzy, very slinky.its like oral sex...only not?

Sarah, sarah has been the war bride' guitar, bass, drum, kazoo, etc, etc tech for years. She was a natural choice for guitar. Why she's been content to remain our instrument tech all these years is a mystery. Now is her time in the sun....or seedy bar house lights.

The other members are camera shy,you know how musicians can be. But we have a drummer,a pianist, some horn players...the whole she-bang. You just have to,uh...take my word for it. I have an honest face, right?

Now for the Important part: sound. As our name implies,im really into the phil spector girl group sound. So its a little bit of that. Rock-a-billy,naturally. Hot jazz, classic country and western, and some bratty punk rock tossed in for good measure.

Our first release is quite aways off,so im relying on mg good name here..anyone want to sign us? We're a side project,so we wont be dropping releases left and right. But we will be around forever.- karoliena.

Influences:
Hillbilly moon explosion
wanda jackson
Patsy cline
Tammy wynette
The ronettes
The crystals
Eddie cochran
Gene vincent

sounds like this

Bettie: oh god! I'm shrinking! Not again. This is the third time this week!

Karoliena: scary? *looks over her band* well... i guess sarah DOES look like she just got out of prison. Bettie....bettie looks like she needs to put on a god damn shirt! What is wrong with you?

Bettie:*shrugs shoulders* i was hot.

Ooc: mainly created to give karoliena a personality of her own....other than coming off as kinda bitchy and serious.

A tour diary from a band not exactly on the road...

January 9th. Vienna,austria.

Today i learned a valuable lesson: never look yourself up on the internetz. I found my name and face attached to all matter of things. Porn pictures(?!),speculation that i'm a man, what nationality i am,i suck at bass,i rule at bass....and it goes on and on.

To address those concerns,i have never done porn. I actually am female. I was born in switzerland, moved to belgium when i was 13.worked in the usa from age 18-22. I am pretty good at bass.but, i still can learn much more. That covers that. Another thing i read a lot about was "karoliena dissolved the war bride for a vanity project.",followed by dirty names aimed at your's truly. Truth be told,im just taking a break from the war bride. True erich and i have "creative differences" regarding his future appearance on a certain tv show. I think its stupid and rather like being someone's trained monkey. But he is hell bent on doing it. Who am i to put the brakes on his fun?

The phil spectres played our first show last night. We played some place called feld maus caberet...yeah,i was confused about the name too. "Tit maus" would have been a better name. All in all,i'd say it went really well. Its been a looooong time since i played to a near empty house. But if you can put on a great show while basically playing for the bartender.....you can put on a good show anywhere.

Our setlist:
Beheaded-offspring cover
I dont want to set the world on fire- ink spots cover
Stiletto- our one original tune.
He's a rebel- the crystals cover
Colon...cats ATTACK!!!! - atomic war bride cover
(Requested)

Fronting tbe band was a little odd at first. Mainly because i didnt have a bass in my hands. What the fuck do you do with your hands on stage?! I can only hold a mic stand in so many ways. If i put my hands in my pockets,i might be mistaken for itching myself...and that wouldnt be cute. Take up smoking? Drink even more on stage? Who knows? It is a problem i never really thought of till last night.maybe it just comes with practice.

I got a few more days until i have to confront "the hand problem" again. The spectres are playing cardiff, wales on friday. Great scene there, being home to "demented are go" and all.
..any suggestions on what to do with my hands on stage?------ karoliena.

Ps: try to resist the urge to be crude....well,too crude.

cardiff was AMAZING! big thanks to all the lovely people who came to see us and hang out with us after the show. it makes us feel special when people take time to wanna talk to us. especially sarah. she has it in her head that she is just a bit character, and bettie and i are the main focus. so... always say hi to sarah.she'll love you forever if you do. *waves to sarah across the room*
i found a little review of our show and clipped it for you. for the most part,i agree with it. except the photo of me.it makes my boobs look far bigger than they really are. so,thanks random photographer! i clipped off the parts about who we opened for. fuck 'em. this is my website. they can get their own.

.. next up at bogiez ,were "the phil spectres". im not sure what you would classify them as. rockabilly? doo wop? some weird ass punk offshoot? i really couldnt say. all i know is the first impression of the band is "what the fuck am i hearing"? followed quickly by "and where can i get more"? most songs feature the vocal harmonies of bettie antonov, sarah tart, and karoliena verlinden. comparisons to atomic war bride are inevitable. musically, the spectres may live on the same block as atomic war bride.but they clearly occupy two seperate houses.

karoliena verlinden singing "stiletto".

the spectres, closed their set with the george thorogood classic, "one bourbon, one scotch, one beer",a song i personally hate. that being said, they brought the house down with their version. chalk up another instance of an opening band being too tough an act to follow. the headliner,......

happy valentines day! do hope yours is going better than mine. neither of my valentines are around. erica is already in england, preparing for the total annihilation fest. and erich...erich is still on that silly tv show....also in england. so fuck you, england. my valentines day will be real boring because of you. i guess you know who will be stopping by the store for some batteries tonight.. speaking of tonight, the spectres will be playing the blue monkey in memphis tennesee. so feel free to swing by if you're in town. i have no idea about the venue. all i know is i like blue. i like monkeys, and i like memphis. so for all i know i could have signed us up to play the national n.a.m.b.l.a. headquarters. we'll find out tonight....

the phil spectres are nearing that magical time where we will actually release something. we have an e.p. worth of material, but we keep slacking on taking it to the ruins of bee's knees military industrial complex for a better tomorrow's record pressing division. im kinda nervous about releasing the material . making music is indeed like bearing children....only with music people are quick to tell you your child is butt ugly and should have been drowned at birth. *sigh* at least with real kids people usually soften the blow.usually. love ya,karoliena v.

hi! did you guys miss me? i've totally missed you! the spectres have been sorta stuck in side project hell for these past couple of months. i've been working with erich on his debut film,"she was a zombie of the third reich".... not to mention touring with the harlots and working on the new atomic war bride release. it has been a busy time to be named karoliena verlinden.

with the film in the can (who knows if it will ever see the light of day.) ,the harlots tour over and the war bride release basically finished,i can finally get to work on my own thing. the big news is: we are going on tour! that is right, the phil spectres will be opening for the lovely julia v,and the equally lovely cristina lake on their "chasing excuses" tour. bettie offered snacks as a bribe, and it worked! bettie is possibly the best cook i know. only she can get me to eat my veggies, and i HATE vegtables. i prefer meat.....feel free to giggle at that. nice. bettie is sitting across the room from me holding a cucumber on her crotch and asking me if i want a nibble.

oh,before i forget, tbe tour starts in june. we "should" have something released by then. love ya,karoliena.

karoliena's report from the western front.

bettie looking cute...and oblivious to a small electrical fire.

boca raton is coming up. ever wonder where the stereotype of florida being the usa's old folks home comes from? look no further than boca. nice place, once you get past the uppity fossils and their offspring.

julia and cristina are sweethearts,as was expected. it would make for more interesting reading if i could say at least one of them was a total bitch...or even a partial bitch for that matter. but no,they are nice as pie. mmmm pie. next time we stop for fuel,i am going to get one of those horribly bad for you fruit pies.i am sure the word "fruit" is being used very liberally in that sense. but who gives a fuck? we all die sometime.so stuff yourself with all the chemically processed shit you can find.if you are lucky, the chemicals will gve you super powers. if you are unlucky.....cancer. it's a crapshoot, really.

last nights set:
1.baby,you can drive my hearse.
2.crazy- willie nelson cover
3.love me till the bombs fall.
4.you dont own me-dusty springfield.
5.chick habit-april march
6. under an uncaring moon.
7. berenice.
8. racket in the casket
9.hot rod death race

karoliena's tour report from the middle of nowhere.

wow. having a tourbus and someone to drive it is AMAZING! right now my body is hurtling over some interstate,i am writing on a computer, and drunk off my ass. this would be terribly dangerous if i was driving myself. i guess there is something to say for rockstarring it up. sooo much better than cramming all your shit in a hearse and counting down the minutes until you can get out and stretch your legs.

we tried a new song last night, "i'm that kind of girl". i wouldnt go as far as calling it a,"dirty" song.....but it has a more than it's share of smudges. i think it went over pretty well. people clapped, and it didnt feel like they were just being polite. who knows ? it might end up on the spectres' debut record. ( i know,i know. my promising of a release has been ongoing.)

i sorta miss the openly used chemicals of my usual tour buddies. usually it's safe to say if you are touring with the harlots or war bride, you're drug friendly. i am petrified to ask if julia or cristina want to drop some acid. i dont want to be given that look. you know the one..it is the same facial expression people use if offered particularly gruesome pornography . oh well,i guess i'll have to settle for bettie being my partner in crime....or i could just ninja dose my tour partners.i kid of course. i only ninja dose people i dont like.love ya,karoliena v.

well, our debut album is finally finished....mostly. we are still finalizing art and what not. so it's probably like a week from being in your grubby little paws. so... wash those paws now! you dont want to get smudges all over your new phil spectres record, right? right.

they say there is no such thing as bad publicity...god i hope "they" are right. to drum up interest,we sent out oodles of pre-release copies to numerous magazines and websites. ONLY ONE REVIEWED IT! yikes.... it makes me want to take a nap in the garage....with the car running.

review:
what a peice of shit. those 5 words that sum this up entirely. the phil spectres meander from semi authentic rock-a-billy to poor psychobilly, then over to sixties girl group. i guess that's implied by their oh so clever band name. ugh,it makes me feel stupid just saying "the phil spectres". i bet karoliena verlinden had a good ego stroke when someone told her she was brilliant for thinking up that gem.

subject wise, this is mainly about sex. one can only hope karoliena's sexual ability is better than her song writing. lyrics are simple, strong structures are simple, musician ship is also simple. on her own, karoliena's vocal delivery is like a dirtier version of taylor swift. it's so sugary sweet, this record should require a warning to diabetics.

all together, the phil spectres (ugh) sound like a 3rd tier tribute band to any of the phil spector groups they rip off..er,are "influenced by". what the fuck ever. final verdict? avoid at all costs, unless you like community rehab theatre productions of "grease".

cons: production.lyrics.vocals.stupid band name,etc etc...
pros: it's cheap and short
sounds like
ooc: doesnt hurt that she looks a bit like karoliena

wow.if i didnt know better,i'd think this writer has a personal vendetta against me. maybe i stole their boyfriend or girlfriend in highschool?

so long and thanks for the free booze.

after a short and uneventful career, the phil spectres are calling it a day.turns out i wasnt near as disciplined as i thought. records were eventually sent out sleevless and....well,i think 30 sold.tops.we did put on a hell of a lot of live shows.it was a blast and i thank everyone who came to see us. i really want to focus on atomic war bride.i dont know why,but it is where i do my best work.i guess it's like how wings sucked and john lennon solo was ok at best. the whole of the war bride is more than the sum of it's parts.

ok,now for the dirt. thats what you kids really want, right? truth be told, bettie, sarah and i grew to HATE each other.bettie and i wrestled for control of the band, and sarah was tired of the whole being on stage thing.she is perfectly content behind the scenes.there were near fist fights and things constantly being thrown at each other.the last few months were hell and i am glad it's over.luv ya,karoliena

karoliena: being a woman who enjoys attention,i'll probably just fold this into my already stellar and well respected solo work.

erica: what? "baby, you can drive my hearse" was a loooong time ago! is if even in print anymore?

karoliena: *frowns* just let me have this moment.....and,no.its no longer in print.

erica: *makes the "crazy" gesture and walks off*
