A Love Least Likely - Starring Katie Coyle and Cassie Smith

"What was she even doing? The two fundamentally hate each other. There was something about this that didn't ring true."

Katie Coyle was sat on the sofa of her bus, her vacant eyes staring midlessly at the soft carpet in front of her. Clad in her normal "off day" attire of tight-fitting vest top and a pair of sweat pants, Katie had her knees tucked up in front of her, her feet planted firmly on the cushion of the sofa. With her arms wrapped tightly around her knees, and her chin resting softly atop them, Katie's gaze continued to be directed at nothing in particular. Reaching up sporadically to brush a stray curl of her shiny brown hair from her forehead, she had been here for around an hour. Or at least she thought so. Her mind had been wandering so far and wide that it may well have been two, three even. On the floor beside her rested a mug of coffee that Nadia, her best friend and tour buddy had made for her earlier, its heat long gone, welfare neglected in place of the desire to at least attempt to work out what was going on here. It all seemed so weird. And it wasn't just that it left her feeling a little uneasy. No, Katie was genuinely scared.

It had been a mere week earlier when Katie and Nadia had been sat basking in the glorious sunshine of an early Japanese summer in a coffee shop just outside Sapporro, each dressed only in shorts and a tshirt, and giggling as they talked through years of bad relationships, awful sexual experiences and the hottest people in music. It was then that Katie's mobile phone had rung, a quick glance at the backlit screen telling her that it was a number she had never heard from before. Excusing herself for a moment, Katie had gotten up from the table, leaving Nadia to tuck into one of the two towering ice cream sundaes which had just arrived at the table. Walking until she was safely out of earshot of other diners and any potential snooping members of the media, Katie pressed the green accept button, and pushed the phone against her ear. "Hello?" she enquired softly, wondering just who had her number.

"Umm...hi, Katie," the somewhat familiar American voice said on the other end of the line. Katie knew it was a voice she had heard before, and in the brief second of silence that was emitting from the other end of the line, she scrunched her nose up slightly, trying to work out who it was. Her question was answered however almost as soon as she posed it. "Yeah...hi," the voice said again, somewhat sarcastically. Katie guessed it was because she hadn't answered. "Yeah, it's Cassie here," a third short burst of words before Katie had a chance to answer, this one without doubt the most piercing of all. Katie felt that sort of sensation of a lurching freeze grip her stomach when she heard the name. Ever since she had first burst onto the scene, Cassie had had it in for her, on a pretty serious level, and she found herself feeling a mixture of apprehension, curiosity and terror. Her eyes darted from side to side, almost as if she expected Cassie to be hiding out in one of the trees nearby, ready to jump down and beat her to a pulp. Her fear of the star had only risen in recent weeks, given that Cassie had become ever-closer to her arch rival, Gia.

Suddenly, Katie was aware that she had yet to speak, and despite the fact her mouth was drier than she had ever felt it, she forced the words past her tongue. "Oh...C-Cassie, yeah. Hello?" She knew she sounded pathetic and a little weak, very weak, but it was the best that she could muster, even though she knew that she had essentially just handed the initiative in this conversation to her opposition. She swallowed hard, trying to regain some if the moisture in her overly dry throat, and she was almost glad to hear Cassie speak so that she didn't have to. "Listen," came the voice from the other side of the phone again. "How often has Jason seen Lucas since he was born." This knocked Katie a little, causing her almost to forget how scared she was. Jason, Cassie's husband had fathered a child with Katie, in her only ever sexual encounter with a man, and in the three months since he had been born, Jason had visited just once, the day after his birth.

"Once..." Katie said slowly. "Why?" She wondered where this was going, and she sat on the grass at the edge of the path she was walking along. Scratching her nose, she waited with baited breath for the answer. She heard a sigh from the other end of the phone which almost sent a shiver down Katie's spine, it sounded so exasperated. "Look...at the end of the day," Cassie said in a voice which sounded fed up, and almost starting to get angry, emotions that she then quickly calmed down. "At the end of the day, I am his stepmother. Whether we like it or not. I am also Jason's wife, and he has done yet another disappearing act. You and I might never have seen eye to eye, but that little boy deserves to at least have some contact with the other side of his family. I feel like I'm responsible for that." In the gap between her sentences, Katie was acutely aware that she wasn't breathing. She couldn't. "I want to come visit," Cassie's voice said in a tone which almost mocked Katie, even though she knew that was not its intention. As the words sunk in, Katie's heart sank, her stomach lurched, and her mouth dropped open; partly shock, partly confusion, but mostly fear.

And now, here she sat one week later. A day she had hoped would take forever to come had arrived in less than a blink of the eye. After having sat in silence for a long time, Katie looked at the white plastic watch on her wrist, and felt her stomach drop again. Any minute now. Her mind started to race. What was she even doing? The two fundamentally hate each other. There was something about this that didn't ring true. Cassie had threatened to beat her up after she had given birth, she had often spat bile at her through her blog, and she had made no secret of the fact that she had plainly hated Katie. The folk songstress felt the nerves course through her veins once again, and she stood up, suddenly very aware of the need to move. She almost wanted to cry, but she had to show no sign of weakness. Just at that, she heard a loud rap on the door outside. Gulping, she tried to steady her shaking hand, before forcing a smile and then pulling the handle of the door softly.

As Katie opened the door, she painted on a fake welcoming look, despite the bubbling fear making her stomach feel like some ice cold witch's cauldron. She stepped onto the floor outside and looked at Cassie, who appeared to be giving her a genuine smile. She could normally detect all the hatred from Cassie, it was always apparent in the way her eyes narrowed when she saw Katie, but now here they were, wide and smiling, really smiling. "Ummm...come in," Katie said, pointing towards the door with her spare hand. Cassie smiled, "Thanks, Katie," and started to ascend the stairs, carrying the baby seat in which her daughter Jody was fast asleep. Cassie really was dressed for this weather, wearing a cropped tshirt and a pair of tiny denim shorts. As she walked up the stairs to the bus, Katie dared herself to steal a look at the singer's toned and tanned legs, and she sighed as she did, before scurrying back into the bus, her head swimming with confusion over what was about to happen.

To be continued...

A Love Least Likely - Part Two

As the door swung open, Cassie felt her first twinge of nerves at the impending scenario. Sure, she had set it up, flown all the way to Japan and almost managed to reach out the olive branch to Katie over the phone, but she still felt that there was something that the 19-year old didn't trust about her. And who could blame her? For the past two years, Cassie had had it in for Katie, and had taken every chance presented to her to try to talk down about the folk starlet, even threatening her with violence on numerous occasions. Here she was now though, a mother to a four month old baby, a wife, and simply a girl who was trying so much harder to be nice to people, to have people like her and to like them back. She had pushed everyone away for a long time, but now she was sure that the confidence that had come from finding such unconditional love for and from her daughter Jody had shown her that she could be a good person after all, and she didn't have to fret over people hating her. All the same, she still found herself very nervous about this meeting. Her hands were clammy on the handle of the baby chair, and the heat of the summer sun was causing her breaths to come out short and fast. Her nerves were also not helped by the fact that she had opted to dress for the weather, her small tshirt and tiny cut-off shorts leaving her feeling exposed and ruing her choice of clothing.

In truth, she wasn't even sure why Katie had been one of the first people she had decided to call. She had told both the singer and herself that it was because she was Jason's wife, stepmother to Katie's newborn son Lucas, and that she felt a large degree of responsibility to at least make contact with the child in representation of her side of the family. But how believable was that? She certainly wasn't convinced by it, and it had been her own idea. What other reason was there though. She felt guilty? She just wanted a friend? Her thoughts were cut short just then though when the terrified big brown eyes of Katie Coyle emerged from behind the door, before it opened fully, and she jumped down, smiling in a weird way that suggested she was trying her hardest, and failing, to appear happy to see Cassie. The 18-year old flashed her a warm smile to try to reassure her, a smile that gave her a wash of warmth. Wow...that was genuine.. She thought, somewhat surprised. Cassie accepted Katie's invitation graciously, and stepped into the bus, blissfully unaware that the world's most famous lesbian was taking the chance to check out her legs as she ascended the stairs.

As Cassie walked in, she marvelled at the pure size of this bus. She knew that Katie and Nadia were the two biggest female stars in music, but she had never expected that they would be touring in something so spectacular. It had everything, from a full-size fridge-freezer to three sofas and a massive widescreen TV. A purple curtain obscured the back area of the bus, where she was sure the bedrooms must have been, but she was certain they weren't the sort of rooms she was used to when she had been on tour before, with just a row of tiny bunks and one drawer apiece. Her wandering mind was interrupted by the door closing behind her, and she turned to see Katie standing there looking nervous, like a lost child. She smiled a little and sat down, almost feeling like she should invite Katie to sit as well, even though she was the guest. Crossing her legs, she sorted Jody's little hat, her daughter sleeping soundly as she moved her hands around, before Cassie placed the carry chair on the floor and smiled up at Katie.

"So...hi," she chuckled a little, as she placed her hands on her knee. "You don't have to look so nervous Katie. I swear I'm not here to beat you up or anything. I just wanted to-" she hesitated, the doubt was back again as to why she was here. But she still could not place it, and she was also aware that she had just left a long period of silence. Her mind panicked, and she blurted out the first thing that she thought of, her eyes obviously giving away the desperation that was prevalent in her mind. "I just get bored at home, and this seemed like such a worthy thing to do." She cursed herself, that was not convincing at all. Her eyes fixed on the carpet, as she wondered why she even felt so nervous, so ill at ease. Breathing deeply, she looked up, only to see Katie's innocent little face peer back at her through those curly locks, her eyes questioning, narrowing slightly as she tried to size Cassie up, tried to work out if she was telling the truth, her mouth sitting slightly agape. Cassie sighed. "So...ummm is Lucas around then?" she chuckled a little, and Katie nodded a little, snapping back to life almost. "Oh...yeah," she said, suddenly looking a lot less like a deer caught in the headlights. "Of course. The reason why you're here. I'll just go get him. You help yourself to a drink if you want to. I'll just be a minute."

As Katie scuttled off through the curtain, Cassie couldn't help but think that she was only too glad to get away from her, and she shook her head a little. She knew that it wasn't going to be easy to make people like her. All she could do was make the effort and hope that people accepted her apologies and saw that she was making a serious effort to change the way she was. She lifted her head and shook her hair from her face, before looking down at Jody and smiling at how peaceful she looked. "Are you gonna meet your little stepbrother now LJ," she whispered, smiling. Just then, Katie walked back into the room, a worried look across her face. She had heard Cassie whispering on her way back, but she had no reason to who, or what she had said. Cassie sensed the suspicion, and smiled up at the girl who carried the tiny baby in her arms. "I was just telling Jody that she'll be meeting her stepbrother today," she said. Katie's expression softened immediately, and she nodded a little, feeling slightly happier that Cassie's rationale also appeared to be to have the kids be close in their early years, something that Katie had wondered about in the last few weeks. She knew that she would never give birth again, her one experience with a guy had been enough, but she didn't want Lucas to grow up alone as she had done. Smiling, Katie felt happy suddenly that Cassie wanted her family to be part of Lucas' life.

Cassie saw her take two steps towards her, holding out the tiny form in front of her a little. "Do you want to hold him?" she asked Cassie, to which the younger girl nodded, and held her arms out, cradling Lucas and smiling as she looked down at her new stepson. "Wow.." she said, without looking up, gently stroking his cheek. "He's so tiny, he's so perfect Katie," she said. When Cassie finally looked up, she saw Katie sit on another sofa opposite her, looking over, her legs folded up in front of her and smiling. "Thank you Cassie," she said quietly. "He's my perfect little prince." Just then, Cassie saw her smile for real for the first time, and politely pretended to not notice as Katie wiped the little tear of pride from her eye.

Cassie chuckled softly. "I can't believe Jason is missing out on th-" she stopped herself just then as she suddenly realised why she was here, why she had chosen to fly the thousands of miles to Japan, and why she had chosen Katie of all people to come and see. They were in the same boat. When Jason had disappeared, he had left Cassie holding the baby, and it had left her feeling miserable. Now she realised it was the same for Katie. When she looked up, Katie gave just the smallest sympathetic smile and nodded. "I guess we are kinda the same," she said. Cassie nodded, "you and me kiddo, holding down the fort." And just like that, the ice was broken. It was as if, as soon as they each knew why Cassie was here, a bond had been formed over their similar situation. Suddenly, each of the girls were far less alone than they had felt that morning.

A Love Least Likely - Post the Chaos

UserPostedImage

"She heard the words, and somehow the failure to take responsibility cut even deeper than he act itself."

Katie Coyle was sat in the back seat of the limo that had taken her, her girlfriend Cassie Summers, and her friend Hayden Merjos to the Chaos Awards just a few hours before. The big difference now is that the 19-year old found herself sitting there alone. The champagne wasn't flowing anymore, there was no music, and there was certainly none of the fun and jokes that there had been on the way to the Kodak Theatre just 5 hours prior. Cassie had left the awards when there was still a while left; she had seen Katie, the girl who loved her and who she had given her heart to, kissing Suzie Stockholm on stage. It had been like a knife in Cassie' back. Not only had it taken her a lot to trust Katie, a trust which had now been thrown straight back in her face, but she and Suzie were intense rivals. The fact that it had happened on a stage with millions watching around the globe didn't matter near as much. That was merely additional salt in the wound.

Katie felt bad. She had been obliged contractually to stay at the awards, and she couldn't chase Cassie at all. She felt awful now, sick to her stomach. It had been a spur of the moment thing. A pretty girl kissed her, and her natural reaction was to just kiss back. She loved Cassie. She truly did, and she was disgusted at herself for betraying her. She was determined at that point to make it right. Cassie wasn't the only one upset though. Katie had seen Hayden storm out of the arena shortly after the incident. Had she somehow upset him too? She knew that Hayden didn't approve when she was at her most promiscuous, but she had hoped that he would at lease tell her without walking away.

Suddenly her train of thought was broken by the door next to her being pulled open. She was startled from her daydreaming and jumped a little, before she looked across to see her driver at the door. Looking out into the night air, Katie could see the reception of the five-star hotel she and Cassie were staying in. She hoped that Cassie had come back here. She was praying that she had not just run away to her parents, to Jason, to anywhere. Katie gulped and got out of the car, feeling the nerves in her stomach building up as she got closer and closer to the door of the hotel. As her heels clicked loudly on the marble of the reception floor, Katie winced. The sound was too loud. She got down and unbuckled her shoes before putting her feet back down. The floor was freezing cold, but the smoothness of it felt good against the balls of her feet.

Reaching the lift, Katie slid the card into the slot that meant it would take her all the way to the penthouse suite at the top of the hotel. She sighed and leaned back, resting her head against the wall of the elevator and waited for it to get to the very floor. She hoped against hope that Cassie would be up here when she arrived, and the more she willed the elevator to speed up, the slower it seemed to go. After what felt like an age, Katie heard the ping noise that meant she had reached her destination, and she sighed softly, waiting for the doors to open.

As the golden doors parted, Katie could immediately hear some commotion. She dived out of the elevator and ran straight for the bedroom. When she got there, Katie placed a hand on the doorframe and stood there, surveying the scene at hand. In front of her, there were clothes everywhere, all over the room. Jeans, shirts, underwear, shoes were scattered all over the floor and on the bed. And there, in the corner, stood next to a chair was Cassie. Katie's heart sank. She could immediately see how much she had hurt her. Cassie's red carpet dress had slipped from her shoulder, and she was standing with her back to Katie. What she was doing, Katie couldn't tell.

When Cassie had heard the elevator open, and heard Katie come closer to the room, she had frozen. She hadn't had a clue what she was going to do when Katie got there, as she knew she inevitably would. Balling her fists, and facing away from the door, she pounded her hand down into the half-filled suitcase in front of her. Just then, out of the corner of her eye, Cassie saw Katie step into her eyeline. She had her arms folded, and it was obvious that she had been crying. Cassie wondered why; she had gotten what she had been after for a long time; Suzie. Cassie turned her head away, she could scarcely take the fact that Katie was even looking at her then.

"Cassa", Katie said through the tears that were now flowing down her cheeks. "Cassa, where are you going?" She had seen the suitcase and panicked. As much as Katie knew Cassie would be hurt, she never imagined she would be trying to leave without at least telling her first. She played uneasily with the hem of her dress as she waited for an answer. "I'm going home Katie. I'm going to my mom and dad's house." Katie stood there, the feeling of her stomach dropping almost overwhelming her. Was this it? She looked over at Cassie and sighed. Moving closer. "But....but...why Cassie?" she asked, her bottom lip trembling and trying to stop the sobbing.

Why? Did she really just ask Cassie that? This stupid question alone almost sent her over the edge and she turned to Katie, hatred burning deep in her eyes. "Why? Are you fucking kidding me Katie?" Katie cowered against the wall and went to speak, but she was stopped short. "You're gonna stand there and ask me why, after you stood up there and kissed Suzie, right in front of me. You parade that slut right in front of my face. You tear my heart out on live TV and in public, and you're gonna stand there and ask me why?" Katie stands up taller and looks at Cassie. "Cassa she kissed me. She walked up and surprised me and she ki-"

"ARE YOU FUCKING KIDDING ME?!" Cassie found herself screaming now. The cheating was one thing, but Katie was now standing there lying to her face, trying to blame someone else. "You kissed her Katie! She started it, but you kissed her! Don't stand there and lie to me after putting me through that you little bitch! You know what your problem is Katie Coyle? You can't love anyone can you? You just fucking can't! No matter how much people give you, you just can't love them back! Everyone who has been with you has been cheated on! Is that a coincidence Katie? Is it?"

Katie looks at Cassie, still crying. The tears were now flowing down her girlfriend's face too. She says nothing though, and Cassie takes a few steps towards her. "Well?" Katie stays silent, and them immediately wishes she didn't. Cassie raises her right hand and slaps Katie hard across her left cheek, sending the folk star reeling to the side. "SPEAK!" Cassie spits. Katie looks around, holding her cheek.

"I do love you. I know...I know I was wrong...but I love you. I really really do." She stands up and moves towards her. "Please don't leave me. I love you. Cassie please. Please!"

Cassie looks at Katie for a second. She then starts to cry. "I can't stay with you. You've done everything you promised me you wouldn't tonight and you've hurt me when I promised myself I'd never let anyone hurt me again! You made me feel loved and wanted and wonderful and special. And then you snatched ALL of that from under me when I needed you most. I can't stay with you, and I hate myself for loving you! I have to leave now Katie. You really need to think about what you want. Don't hurt anyone else!"

Cassie turns and closes her suitcase, zipping it up and lifting it. She wipes her tears. Just then, Katie gets a jolt of fear, and she feels inclined to stop Cassie leaving. She leaps over the bed and grabs Cassie's arm. "Please don't go!"

The next thing Katie knows, she's lying flat out on the floor. The very second she had touched Cassie's arm, the 18-year old had swung, catching her with a slap square in the jaw and knocking her to the ground. Cassie looks at her, tears still streaming down her face. "Don't you ever touch me again," she says, as she turns, and Katie is forced to watch her leave.
