Genres: Folk, alternative rock, reggae fusion, new wave
Release: June 5 2012
Label: Black Tie Productions
Topics: Youth, conformity, society, faith, love

Background

The first full-length album by Aimery Achai has finally been completed. The album deals with issues of youth, conformity, society, faith and love. The album is a mixture of Aimery's favorite musical sounds, so there isn't a set genre. However, the album remains consistent, with each track painting a story, from the freedom of youth, to the lessons that comes with age. The album is a story of life and society, without sounding contrived. The record has a strong folk backbone, with Aimery narrating his life and the world in his perspective. The album was called "RISE", because Aimery wanted people to elevate their thinking of the world. To have a stronger stance on what they believe in, and to inspire a change.

Tracks and Analysis

Youth

(Achai, A.)

Youth is about conformity and society, in the eyes of a teenager trapped in crossroads to be someone they want to be and someone society tells them to be. The song was written by Aimery Achai from a personal level on pressures of conformity growing up. The song starts out with "romanticized" vision of youth living carefree and hoping to be what they want to be. The song then questions the extent of this freedom, and then the mental chaos begins. The song then continues into the topic of conformity asking "to follow the crowd or go my own way", a question we have asked ourselves at least once in our lives. This then leads to the chorus, which is Aimery with vocal reverbs to make it sound like an audience of voices. After the chorus the song continues to question what are we to do. Like a few songs on the album, the song is an alternative pop/rock song that combines both organic and computer instrumentals, the prominent two are a synthesized keyboard and electric guitar. Both instruments are played by Aimery. The song also has a strong drum beat in standard time, and soft bass. The vocal reverb Aimery used, was by multi-track recording, to create a sound similar to a crowd chanting the lyrics.

Looking to the sky,
and making wishes that will be never be
With every shooting star,
we dream of what we will grow up to be
Running in the wind and being free
Nothing can stop us now
until we find what life really means

Our minds are in this war,
screaming out loud
Is this life worth fighting for?!
Life seems like a dream,
what does it all mean?
Stuck in a crossroad
Don't know which way to turn
Follow the crowd or go my own way

We are the youth,
the lost souls of the damned
Lost in this world,
in a never ending journey
We are the youth
Society tells us lies,
but our heart tells us the truth

Should we do what they say,
or continue living the lies they want us to portray
If I rebel they'll call me the enemy,
If I do as they say,
It'll tear my soul away

We are the youth,
the lost souls of the damned
Lost in this world,
in a never ending journey
We are the youth
Society tells us lies,
but our heart tells us the truth

Caught in the middle,
What are we to do?
They make life like a riddle,
Be yourself and become an outcast,
Be like everyone else
and life will go well

We are the youth,
the lost souls of the damned
Lost in this world,
in a never ending journey
We are the youth
Society tells us lies,
but our heart tells us the truth

Jen: Great job with this song. I really like it. I think that this is a great song for younger people such as myself to be encourage by. Its always good to find your own way and this song is forever here to remind us of that. Looking forward to hearing the rest.

Track analysis

Cool Kids

(Achai, A.)

The song is about the issues of peer pressure, and how the media forces people to be like the people on television. It points out the hyper-sexualization of the media, and how teens and young adults easily consume it. It gives people a feeling like they have to fit in, by changing themselves to be a "cool kid", so they work all their lives to be something they truly aren't. By doing so, they miss out on life's great moments, they truly haven't achieved happiness and self actualization. The lyrics are personal too, its written from true life experiences from Aimery on fitting in and being someone others want you to be. Everyday we are forced to choose a path, go our own way or go the way of others. Doing the latter may seem nice at first, but as time goes on it isn't has rosey as you wanted it to be. The song is highly influenced by 80s New Wave and Electroclash, featuring a dominant synthesized keyboard, and computerized instruments all created via GarageBand. Aimery's vocals are processed via a guitar amp to give it a distorted lo-fi sound.

Coolest kids on the block,
everyone trembles when they walk,
they're bad news,
but they make everything seem so good
Look at them the wrong way,
you better hope you end up okay

All they do is drink,
and get high all day
Party every week,
and sex all night
Only way to be them,
is to sell your soul away

Don't you wanna be a cool kid?
Be apart of something you never were before
Be a cool kid and get to rule the world
Don't we all wanna be a cool kid?
(Oh) one of the cool kids (cool kids)

Be a prick and get away with it,
get the hottest chicks
and do bad just for kicks
Their the cool kids,
people work their whole life to be one of them
But is it worth it in the end?

Don't you wanna be a cool kid?
Be apart of something you never were before
Be a cool kid and get to rule the world
Don't we all wanna be a cool kid?
(Oh) one of the cool kids (cool kids)

Don't you wanna be a cool kid?
Be apart of something you never were before
Be a cool kid and get to rule the world
Don't we all wanna be a cool kid?
(Oh) one of the cool kids (cool kids)

Say what you want,
they're the cool kids,
and you're not
You don't wanna be them
Be yourself
Life will catch up in the end

Sounds similar too...

(Achai, A.; Powers, C.)

The song begins its middle section, which is about politics and society. The song was largely inspired by anti-war songs of the 60s - 70s, and references various events that occurred in those decades. Such as the Summer of Love, and Vietnam Protests. In the song Aimery cries out for everyone to stop the conflict and come together as one. We should see people as our sister and brother and not as our enemy. The song takes the chorus from the iconic "Get Together" by The Young Bloods, Aimery did so because the chorus captures the rest of the song perfectly, and nothing else would do. In terms of sound, Aimery was inspired by one of his idols Bob Dylan, and decided to go in a folky route. The song is plain, and features nothing but an acoustic guitar and a harmonica. The song is a mid-temp folk song, with a harmonica break.

They say they're gonna bomb us,
murder, and rape us
Make fear in our hearts,
and panic in our minds
Pillage our towns,
and cleanse our culture
They want war,
they want to make us no more
Ask yourself this,
Who am I living for?

C'mon people now,
Smile on your brother
Ev'rybody get together
Try and love one another right now

War what is is good for?
Pain and suffering?
Or our leaders ego boost?
Peace and love may sound cliche
But we must come together for the sake of it
A great man once said
an eye for an eye will make us all blind
Don't fight for the sake of mankind

C'mon people now,
Smile on your brother
Ev'rybody get together
Try and love one another right now

Put flowers in their guns,
and love in their hearts
Remember those weapons will kill your sons,
Our parents fought for freedom,
in that hot summer of love
So put down your difference,
and acknowledge your similarities
You will see we are all the same,
in our special way

C'mon people now,
Smile on your brother
Ev'rybody get together
Try and love one another right now

Our problems are like dust in the wind
they fly away and never return
Lets all sit down, and make solutions,
to a temporary problem
Hold your arms, and only use them for a sweet embrace

C'mon people now,
Smile on your brother
Ev'rybody get together
Try and love one another right now

C'mon people now,
Smile on your brother
Ev'rybody get together
Try and love one another right now

I Wished They Knew

(Achai, A.)

Like the previous track, "I Wished They Knew" is a slow acoustic song played only with a acoustic guitar. The track was recorded on Aimery's computer making it sound more like a demo than a final product. The songs lyrics are about corrupt politicians, and wanting them to walk in the mile of an average citizens shoes. The chorus centers around the question of whether the politicians knows how the middle class or impoverished person feels. The chorus was inspired by Bob Dylans' "Like A Rolling Stone". Aimery wanted to keep the song short and sweet, and was iffy about adding a highly political songs to the album. This was the first track written on the album, and months of writers-block.

Living in a world full of corruption,
and politicians lying for our money
soon there will be a eruption of ideologies
I wish they they know, that money can't save their lives
when the people rise they'll cause a worldwide disruption
You got now where to hide, we know your lies

Boy I wish they knew
Oh boy I wish they knew
Boy I wish they knew

I want you to take a walk with me
So I wish you can see what I see
A boy who doesn't get enough to eat,
because his mom can't make ends meet
How do you sleep while the world suffers?
How can you hate someone because they are gay?
And spread lies and words or hate?

Boy I wish I knew
Oh boy I wish I knew
Boy I wish I knew

Do you know about hunger?
living on less then minimum wage
and not having enough to eat
Do you know their are homeless people on the street?
Living on drugs to take the pain away
And what about a mother who sells her body
to keep the clothes on her back
No you don't know how they feel

But I wish you did
I really wish you did

RISE

(Achai, A.)

Rise may seem to many as a anti-political song but it isn't. Rise is about standing up for whats right, its about being outspoken, and aggressive in your goals. Rise is exactly what the album is in one song. The song was written after being angered about privacy concerns with the government, and their power to take away certain freedoms. The power of corporations over politics is ridiculous, and they should be separated. Rise starts off slow, and progresses into a climatic back and forth chant with a choir. The song has heartland rock, country, and blues influences. While taking in some elements of gospel and opera. The song is Aimery's most powerful, in that he wanted it to appeal to everyone regardless of language. The feel and sound of the song was most important, giving it the big punch. Musically, Aimery wanted to combine operatic style, with rock and roll.

We are all living in a fucked up world,
idiots in power and people with no morals
What are we to do but live along with it
Change only makes things worse
and every blessing seems like a curse
Stand up and you'll get shot (bang bang)
Sit down and you'll lose everything you got
What are we to do?
What's going on?

Are these idiots coming up with a New World Order?
Get ready for it, cause' Big Brother will always be watching
A world with no freedom will cause us all to lose faith
Ask yourself this,
What are you living for?
To be controlled and manipulated?
To be fed lies like everything is gonna be alright?

Rise, so everything can be alright
Rise, so you can have rights
Rise, so our youth may have a chance
Rise, so you won't be told lies

We're people not numbers,
we have souls and a mind
Use them to think not hate
Government is there to protect us
but all they're doing is killing us
Propaganda and words of hate
Is like evil spreading though our veins,
a never ending plague that will corrupt us all
And suck us in like a black hole

Rise, so everything can be alright
Rise, so you can have rights
Rise, so our youth may have a chance
Rise, so you won't be told lies

I'm singing this song to open your minds,
to tell you whats going on
We together as a people are far stronger,
than anything a government can concoct
We must stand together and rise
And say with me this

Rise, so everything can be alright
Rise, so you can have rights
Rise, so our youth may have a chance
Rise, so you won't be told lies

Faith

(Achai, A.)

Faith is Aimery's most personal and inspirational song. Largely inspired by Country Rock and Blues music, Aimery wrote this after "losing" himself, and despite his darkest moments he decided to remain strong. Although not religious himself, the song was largely inspired by religion and its way of making people remain fearless in times of despair. Aimery sings in a lower key, with a soft twang to his voice. Musically Aimery was inspired by his idol Elvis in the sound of the record.

We all lose ourselves in the beauty of sin,
time and time again I become someone I'm not
I can't blame the drink of evil,
or the sweet fruits of hell
But my own free will
I fell to temptation, and lost my faith
Like an angel fallen from heaven
I was changed and out of my element

I must keep my faith,
as I walk with satan
I must keep my head up high
and look to the sky
For I know this is just a storm
And paradise is at the end

Just keepin' the faith
keeping the faith
Just being strong,
and walk through this long journey called life
Just keepin' the faith
keeping the faith

Hate will keep me trapped in the bowels darkness,
only love and compassion may set me free
Keep my heart warm, and my thoughts kind
I will hold on to my hope, and bear my pain

When all the lights are on, but there is no one home
Who can I run to when I need a shoulder?
I have no choice but to hold on to my faith
because I know its the only thing that can never escape me

Just keepin' the faith
keeping the faith
Just being strong,
and walk through this long journey called life
Just keepin' the faith
keeping the faith

When life plays its cards, the wicked will fall
The good will triumph
But where will my fate end?
I just have to walk on this journey we call life,
and let the wind lead me to where I need to go

Just keepin' the faith
keeping the faith
Just being strong,
and walk through this long journey called life
Just keepin' the faith
keeping the faith

Just keepin' the faith
keeping the faith
Just keepin' the faith
keeping the faith

Runaway

(Achai, A.)

Runaway was written after he ran away from home because he felt like he was trapped in hell. So he took everything that mattered for him, and just left, to begin a life on his own. Like the wind he went from place to place not feeling he belong anywhere, always feeling alone. The song employs heavy drums, largely taken from hip hop music, guitars, and minimal synthesizers. The Aimery again used his voice, and multiplied them to sing different parts of the song at once. And using the call-back method in the chorus.

Runaway, just runaway
Leave the world behind
And go away
Runaway, runaway
Who am I living for?

I don't belong here,
I'm not one of them
Feeling like I don't belong
Where else can I go?
I got no family to run to
No place to call home
I'm all alone

Trapped in the darkness,
there's no where to escape
All I can do is run,
Run as far as I can do
To different places,
and among strange faces
None of them look like me,
no place I felt like I belong

Runaway, just runaway
Leave the world behind
And go away
Runaway, runaway
Who am I living for?

Runaway, runaway
Just runaway
Runaway, runaway
Just runaway

I'm an outcast,
there's no one like me
Sheltered in my loneliness
who can I turn to?
Got no friends,
got no family

Life is nothing like a nightmare
and I'm drowning in terror
I hope someone could save me from this nightmare
Until then all I will run, and hope that I could fly

Runaway, runaway
Just runaway
Runaway, runaway
Just runaway

Runaway, runaway
Just runaway
Runaway, runaway
Just runaway

Runaway, just runaway
Leave the world behind
And go away
Runaway, runaway
Who am I living for?

Katie: I have always had a lot of respect for you Aimery. You are never one of these big diva-type stars who have to draw all the attention to themselves, and you just get on with what you are doing. I think Faith will be one of my favourite songs of this year. From the first verse the lyrics had me hooked, and I love the imagery that it places in my head when I listen to it. Your album so far has been very very impressive, and I know that I'll have to grab myself a copy as soon as I can. I really enjoy this, and I hope you get the success that you deserve from it, even if you aren't pushing yourself into the limelight with controversy and publicity stunts. Really proud of what you have done, and you should be too :)
