Ladies and gentlemen, please welcome to the stage, with an all new single, Your special guest opening act! As the audience cheers, the stage, upon which sits a wondrously decorative set of golden stairs, a gold platform up front, and a backdrop which is adorned with thousands of shimmering and glittering stars, starts to darken, and the gentle lounge music which had been playing in the background dims. From somewhere on the dark stage, a piano sounds out a few notes, slow and steady, which are then mirrored and replied to by a slightly electronic sounding keyboard. The sound of the piano comes back on again, calling out through the darkness, before the reply comes again without fail. After three rounds of this, a small spotlight appears on stage, just catching the glint off the top of the paint on the piano, and making it glare slightly in the light. As the spotlight widens, the unmistakeable dark curls of Katie Coyle come into view, and the audience unleashes a swell of cheering on seeing the superstar sat at her piano. Katie smiles, slightly embarrassed at the sheer volume of noise being thrown back at her, and flicks her hair back. Katie leans forward and begins to play a slow, yet somewhat upbeat few notes on her piano. She smiles again as she leans in toward her microphone, and as she sings her way through the slowish opening chorus, with only the tinkling of her piano, and the sound of a keyboard playing some gentle electronic chords, almost inaudible behind her, Katie ways gently. Her haunting voice carries across the arena, leaving the crowd staring in awe and amazement at her performance of this all new song. A shock to say the least, given her very recent release. Nothing seems so easy for this girl Her mind so filled with doubts, is still where wishes linger The journey's always breezy in her world With a hope deep in her heart and a space on her finger But where did she get so lost? Just like a battle with the bottle she knows the cost Of always running around Of always chasing him down Can't she see he's nothing more than a hollow crown?Another shock comes then however, as Katie reaches the last few notes of the opening verse. During this time, a drum nose comes in from the background, growing louder and louder as it beats out its steady rhythm. When Katie reaches the final word, there are four lone beats, before a guitar plays a single chord. Just then, at the back of the stage, another spotlight comes on, illuminating the staircase at the rear most point. Stood there, dressed in a white top and jeans, is the figure of Nadia Berry, who smiles widely as another massive cheer erupts from the audience for her arrival. At the sound of the guitar chord, Nadia raises her mic and starts to sing through the considerably quicker pre-chorus section of the song. This time, the piano notes have gone, and the song is dictated by mid-tempo drums and guitar, with the keyboard adding a slightly dance-inspired element to the rock-pop sound. As Nadia sings, she descends the stairs one by one, her confident voice delivering every word with style and aplomb, with a smile spread widely across her face the entire time. Perfect couples plastered on a movie screen Doesn't Hollywood look so romantic? Really, everyone there is either paper thin or high on heroin But I know we'd be the real deal, the American Dream
When Nadia reaches the bottom step, at the same time as she finishes the pre-chorus, she raises her hands and strides confidently towards the front of the stage, imploring the audience to clap along in time with the drum beat which pounds with every step she takes. Reaching the front of the stage area, Nadia looks sideways, where she meets Katie, and the two smile at each other, before launching into the chorus of the song together, all the time swaying from side to side, and occasionally catching each other's gaze and trying not to laugh. It's clear from the off that the two are having a fantastic time singing the song about commitment and the future. The song, by this point, is an almost perfect fusion of the two styles the girls have While Katie often exhudes emotion and bemoans relationships, the song also catches Nadia's poppy side, while bringing a little of the guitar work both girls' songs are famed for. When you say you love me, I feel so cold and empty Can't help but feel that one day you'll run off and forget me And when you say you need me, I always think you're lying Can't help but feel that one day you'll just give up trying I wanna be something more, but you won't let me play the part You give me cheap flings, but I want diamond rings We're wearing thin, moments away from falling apart Yeah, all you'll ever give me is cheap flings, but I want diamond ringsWhen the chorus finishes, Katie walks slightly to the side, raising one hand into the air. "Laides and gentlemen," she cries, lowering her hand to point across the stage. "Ms Nadia Berry," her words being greeted with another loud round of cheering. From across the stage, Nadia chuckles and shakes her head at Katie before she points across at her. "And let me introduce you all to my good friend. This is Ms Katie Coyle!" Another rapturous cheer goes up, and the two smile at each other before shrugging. Nadia then struts into the shimmering light at the centre of the stage, messing her long blonde hair with her hand as she goes. She starts to sing the second verse, which retains the same rhythm and relative speed of the first, but without Katie's piano, which has been replaced by drums and a quieter guitar piece. The verses are very emotive and tear-jerking, and the music in the background displays that well. When Nadia finishes that verse, she also launches straight into the pre-chorus again as she is washed over by gold lighting upon the stage, standing alone, her hair blowing in the wind. She cries at night for a time she feels she wasted Is she blindly being led around a circular trek? Why won't he let her see, see the life that she's already tasted? Is a ring on her finger really a noose around his neck? But his drug doesn't ever give her a high She needs the pills in her pocket just to help her get by The stinging tears dull the sparkle which was once in her eye
Perfect couples plastered on a movie screen Doesn't Hollywood look so romantic? Really, everyone there is either paper thin or high on heroin But I know we'd be the real deal, the American DreamAfter the second pre-chorus though, the song launches straight back into another verse, and this time Katie takes centre-stage again. Small flickers of light make it look like the stage floor is adorned in glitter as Katie moves slowly, bringing her hand all the way up from her hip, up her side and above her head as she continues to sing her way through the next verse, keeping her eyes closed the entire time, as she meanders her way through the very thought-provoking words. At the end of the verse, Nadia joins her again at the front of the stage and the two best friends smile at each other again before turning back to back and singing the chorus once again, their voices harmonising perfectly. Halfway through, they start to march away from each other, and each of them walks to a corner of the stage, waving out to the adoring crowd as they keep singing. Don't fill this beautiful girl with empty hopes Why don't you give her the freedom away from these incessant rings? Why does she feel like she's always stood on downward slops Only you can help her soar if you just give her her wings No wonder she lost all signs of light When you extinguished her passion she lost her flight But just like a phoenix she can still rise, just please give her a reason, a reason to ignite When you say you love me, I feel so cold and empty Can't help but feel that one day you'll run off and forget me And when you say you need me, I always think you're lying Can't help but feel that one day you'll just give up trying I wanna be something more, but you won't let me play the part You give me cheap flings, but I want diamond rings We're wearing thin, moments away from falling apart Yeah, all you'll ever give me is cheap flings, but I want diamond ringsAs that chorus ends, the two girls stop exactly where they are in the middle, about five paces from each other and the music slows down considerably. The stage goes dark, and Katie is the only one illuminated by a glittering beam from the highest rafters of the Kodak Theatre. The guitars come back in softly at this point, and the sound of a piano starts to play again, this time more distant however. Katie stands, feet together, both hands grasping the microphone, as she stares out into the crowd from the darkness, singing her way through the much slower bridge of the song. Born free, like a gust of wind across a lonely bay Stop living in this endless circle, and wipe her tears away All she wants is a glimpse of what you will be But she's not a crystal ball so you gotta let her see If you won't take her to the future then set her free set her free set her freeNo sooner has Katie reached the last line of her section, than her light goes out, replaced by a very similar light above the head of Nadia, still stood just a few short feet away. The blonde stares at the stage at first before lifting the mic one last time to her mouth and singing the chorus one last time, much slower, with hardly any music backing her. She stares into the distance as she reaches a hand out into the darkness of the audience in front of her, as if trying to grab something unattainable. When the song ends, Nadia smiles and lowers her mic, and as the stage lights come back on, the audience are on their feet cheering and applauding for Nadia and Katie. When you say you love me, I feel so cold and empty Can't help but feel that one day you'll run off and forget me And when you say you need me, I always think you're lying Can't help but feel that one day you'll just give up trying I wanna be something more, but you won't let me play the part You give me cheap flings, but I want diamond rings We're wearing thin, moments away from falling apart Yeah, all you'll ever give me is cheap flings, but I want diamond ringsBack on stage, the two singers smile at each other before they hug tightly and wave to the audience one last time. At that, the stage goes dark once again. |
