Note: The term classical more correctly refers to a specific period of scored orchestral music, than to all orchestral music. For the purposes of this thread, I'll bow to this popular mistake and use it to refer to all composed and performed music as opposed to recorded music.

So, what's your opinion on "classical"? Boring? Inaccessible? Automatically superior to all other forms of music even if you don't appreciate it?

Personally I reckon that's the case with many people. They assume that "classical" is some kind of pinnacle of musical achievement, so they hesitate to listen because it's harder to appreciate, or harder to judge. Everyone's familiar with Beethoven (the 5th and 9th Symphonies particularly) and Mozart (Magic flute), and to a lesser extent the late 20th century composers Prokofiev (Peter and the Wolf) and Stravinsky (Rite of Spring). In the last century soundtracks for film and television have slowly superseded those for ballet or opera, Jerry Goldsmith, John Williams, Danny Elfman, but still it is often regarded as separate, almost an entirely different art form than "popular" music.

I like a few pieces here and there, but increasingly I'm a minimalist. John Cage, Philip Glass, Arvo Pärt, that's the kind of stuff I really like. That being said, Stravinsky's Rite of Spring has been my favourite since childhood watching of Fantasia.

What do you think? Favourite composers? Any thoughts? AT ALL?

Played that game. It's okay. But you know, the fact that you heard Ave Maria from a video game suggests you're either very young, or very unobservant, and the fact that the only "classical song" you liked is one you heard on the menu screen of a video game suggests you're so lazy you'll only digest music when it comes packaged in something else that you like. But hey, nothing wrong with that.

On the television soundtrack front, Michael Giacchino's soundtrack to lost is unbelievable, as is Bear McCreary's Battlestar Galactica. I am a geek.

Dude, I already took music appreciation, honestly most classical music=crap in my ears, I know without it my music wouldn't exist, but I don't give a shit. WHAT THE HELL DOES LAZINESS HAVE TO DO WITH HEARING? btw, I'm very observant, I just gave my opinion on the only classical song I actually liked, so gfy man or get off my case.

I enjoy a lot of classical, Glass notably.

And the nu-classical pass-off stuff which entails things such Hans Zimmer.

Hell yeah to classical. (Except for much contemporary stuff, specifically Glass and Cage. Can't get into them. Koyaatsaqui or whatever left me scratching my head, thinking didn't the dadaists die off 80 years ago?)

Some of my particularly favorite pieces:

Beethoven's 6th (Pastoral)
Dvorak's 9th (New World)
Prokofiev's Cinderalla Suite
Prokofiev's Symphonie Classique
Barber's Adagio for Strings
Tchikovsky's 1812 Overture
Elgar's Pomp and Circumstance
Elgar's Enigma Variations (Particularly Nimrod)
Liszt's Hungarian Rhapsody #2
Stravinksy's Rite of Spring
Mussorgsky's Pictures at an Exhibition
Saint-Saens' Samson and Delilia Ballet (Particularly the Bacchanalia)
Britten's Simply Symphony
Dvorak's Slavic Dances
Respighi's Fantastic Toyshop
Respighi's Pines of Rome / Fountains of Rome
Debussy's Claire de Lune
Ravel's Bolero
Weinberger's Schwanda the Bagpiper

Among many others...

I'm a huge fan of the "the Five" (Rimsky-Korsakov, Mussorgsky, Borodin) and the composers that studied under or were influenced by them (Dukas, Prokofiev, Stravinksy, etc)

Also, I believe that Stravinsky's Rite of Spring is the most elaborate and dramatic piece of classical music there is. THAT is a masterpiece.

Yes, yes and yes. Your list well exceeds my modest collection.

My favourite Philip Glass is his Solo Piano album, which is probably one of the few musical recordings I could (and have) listen to on repeat for hours on end. People go on about the Moonlight Sonata, but the Metamorphosis suite does much more for me. It's no secret that I have a boner for slow repetition in music.

My grandma made me listen to Mozart when I was little, probably hoping I would develop a taste for quality music. In hindsight, all it gave me was an appreciation for classical arrangements in metal music.
But I do like the old work, especially Bach and his organ masterpieces. Toccata and Fuge in D minor...beautiful! But I also listen to Mozart, Beethoven, Schubert, Strauss, and basically everything that is not too heavy on the ears. Tried Mahler a few times but it's too heavy for my taste.

Then I definately recommend Ravel's Bolero. The entire 15 minute piece is a repetition of 2 lines of music set to an unchanging percussion. It's absloutely amazing what he was able to do with just one theme and one rhythm. Reportedly, after it's first public presentation, the audience all had their programs rolled into tight balls because of the tension the piece created.

i like a few composers, primarily from romanticism and 20th century: liszt, chopin, schubert, schönberg, john cage, steve reich, bizet, debussy, paganini... i'd say my favourites are debussy, chopin, paganini and schönberg. "children's corner" by debussy is absolutely great.
does opera fit in here? if it does, i would like to mention carl orff's entire "trionfi", which is one of the most amazing things i've ever heard, and "vesti la giubba", an aria from the opera "pagliacci" signed by pavarotti and composed by leoncavallo, i think. beautiful.

I enjoy classical music. My top three composers are Chopin, Bach (Johann), and Mozart. I played a lot of Chopin while growing up. Same with Bach, Mozart, Debussy, Beethoven, etc., but Chopin was my favourite because of all the beautfiul valses he made, all so very melodic and full of emotion. His Valse op. 69 no. 2 was my favourite, and after ten years of learning it, I still play it whenever I get the time.

I like some of it. Lots of it. I'd probably like more of it if I listened to more of it. But it's a big world that I find rather hard to get into. No idea where to start so I end up just hearing bits here and there and going "oh, that was nice".

I'd actually say to start with a time period and geographic area. Although the genre is the same, the musical stylings are so completely different. It's a lot of fun to watch the evolution of classical music, because a lot of it coincides with other histories. War, political, economic, artistic.. you name it. I'm sure you'll be able to find a website (hell, probably wikipedia would do the trick) that could introduce you to the chronology of classical music.
