our name is stars. - debut studio album. (sneak peak #1)

UserPostedImage
(our name is stars. composes of Alex Manning Jr., Nathan Castle, Jason Andrews)

A static sound is heard over a cinematic, noir style imagery of a recording studio. The camera passes by across the length of a soundboard and continuing onto a door near by and entering the sound booth where Nathan Castle is seen with a pair of headphones hanging around his neck, he is standing in front of a microphone. The camera goes behind him, looking over his shoulder at a lyric sheet in front of him. The text on the page is manipulated by the camera to look blurry, although it can be seen that some of the lyrics have been crossed with a black sharpie, some new ones added to the sides.

"Can I have like a fifteen minute break? I'm not feeling this chorus at all right now."

Nathan says, the camera panning out from the sheet as he puts the headphones around the mic and walks out of the room with the lyric sheet. The screen fades to black, the static sound finally stopping. After a few seconds of silence, Castle says:

"This is so out there but... fuck it."

Not a second passes from when we hear Castle finish his sentence, that music begins to play over a black screen. What like sustained church organ keys, begin to ring in. We again get a shot of Nathan in the sound booth, this time with his headphones on, singing into the recorder.

I'm selling hooks you can't deny
Their perfect for radio stations to play all day
I kinda hope they do, I need the cash
So I'll surgically remove my heart
And replace it with an ATM machine
Who am I kidding? I'll take credit too

When he is seen backing away from the mic, smiling, the music picks up and now a churning electric riff dissolves the keys, with powerful bass drums coming into play. We now get a shot of our name is stars's multi-instrumentalist Alex Manning Jr., and guitarist Jason Andrews in the same live booth, playing their respective instruments.

I threw stones at your window again
Thinking I'd get some blood pumping
While a Fierce record served as background music
I didn't spend a nickel on this record
But I want my nickel back

Chase me down the street of a suburban neighborhood
Critics say I need to put more soul in it
Hey TMZ, won't you climb a tree for me?
Hey Pitchfork, sorry we're not hipster indie superstars

The music comes to a sudden halt, returning to a shot of Nathan laying down on a couch, in what one can make out to be the recording studio. He's rubbing his eyes, in obvious discontent.

nathan.
I just feel like if that's the true first song of the record after the intro, it needs to have a huge chorus, otherwise, all the verses don't mean shit.

The scene shifts once again, this time showing the band's producer Ryan Ross Hernandez, sitting in front of the sound board, talking directly to whomever is holding the camera.

ryan.
These guys have a clear vision of what they want to accomplish. They have a sound in mind, and they know what they want their debut record to sound like. Nathan is one of the best songwriters I've ever worked with. He has the balls and the wittiness, that I wish I had when I wrote the first PANIC! record. He's cussing, he's making modern day references in a upfront matter. You have to be confident to make such ballsy moves on your first record, and these guys are.

We see Nathan looking directly at the camera, wearing an opened sweatshirt and a stripped shirt underneath it.

nathan.
We are currently in New York City. We are recording our debut album in Avatar Studios. We've been recording for the last five or six months now. I'm ready to go home, man. [chuckles]

Now we see Alex in the same spot and setting where Nathan was just a split second ago.

alex.
Most of the sessions have gone, hectic when they need to be, but freeing. We've worked some in the studio, we've worked some at our producer's home. We each kinda just do our own thing for a while, before we come together here and put it all together.

Back to Nathan.

nathan.
This is the first time we actually work in a professional studio, as a signed band to a major label, with a big budget to work with. So it's split; half the time I think this is the best time of my life and I should cherish it, but then the other half I feel stressed out and wonder why I got myself into this.

Back to Alex.

alex.
I'll have an idea for a song and demo it on keyboards or drum machine, whichever is nearest, and I'll send it to Nathan who will try to write lyrics around it. Or he sends me a vocal part he recorded on his computer and I'll try to build something around that.

Back to Nathan.

nathan.
It's a process for us to create songs. I can write songs but I can't compose them. I know how I want it to sound in my head, but I can't play any instrument. Does that make me want to rip my hair out of my head sometimes? Yeah, but that's why I'm in a band.

The scenario changes to show Nathan holding a piece of paper, singing over a hip-hop inspired drumbeat and horn section.

I put my success ahead of all my friends
I want to meet new women,
And live somewhere new,
And replace my sorrow with green
I put my success ahead of all my friends
I want to meet new women,
And live somewhere new,
And replace my sorrow with green

We return to a previous scene showing Ryan once again talking to the cameraman.

ryan.
I met Nathan last year in New York City. Back when the idea of having my own record label began, I hired a scouting team to seek new talent. The first band I met through them was our name is stars. Since then I've just had a great professional relationship, as well a friendship with these guys. They are very talented at what they do and I think when this album is out, people will quickly take notice of them.

We again see Nathan speaking to the camera again.

nathan.
It is July 13th. We have about two weeks left in the studio, before we send the record to Ryan in Montana where he will put the finishing touches on the production end of our music. So for the next two weeks we will not sleep very much at all and finish this album. Jason is currently working on guitars for two songs on the records that don't have any other guitar parts, so he needs to make the most of those. And currently we are forcing him to do just that.

Jason is seen playing a quick riff with some sort of delayed pedal on it, on his cherry red Gibson ES-335. After a couple of seconds, we return to see Nathan in the sound booth again. He is speaking over the shot, saying:

"It took me a while to come to terms with being a recording artist signed to a label. But once I realized we won't ever make a first album again, I've never been as inspired to create something special and meaningful for me."

We now see him singing acapella into the microphone.

Can we please take a minute
To talk about me
And my hatred for most postmodern things
Like trust funds and fake breasts
Like drug dealers and Starbucks
Reality shows and gossip sites
I know I can't complain I only have myself to blame
But celebrities on Twitter
Are pissing me off
With their irrelevant 140 characters
Oh no

If the tea parties correct
I should buy my kids a gun
And teach them the good values of the lord
“Son, you shouldn't have sex until you're married,
But it better be to a nice, southern Christian girl
Who reads the Bible nightly
And only does missionary”

After a few seconds of static silence, Nate gives a thumbs up. We hear Ryan's voice come of the speakers.

ryan.
Nathan, the Conservative party and radical Christian groups just called, they want you to change that verse.

nathan.
Fuck 'em. Fuck 'em all.

They both share a laugh as the screen goes black again, with the text coming in the frame until the video cuts off. Playing us out is a soft piano melody.

Nadia: Thank god Ryan has a great taste in music, because it's a massive pleasure to have you guys signed to North Hill, and this little preview does a great job of showing what you guys are all about. The lyrics are witty and well thought out, and there's just a really nice, refreshing sound that you guys provide that I think the industry is lacking. Bring on Friday! ;)

Nathan: Thank you for the kind words lady boss. We are honored to be signed to your label. Hopefully we don't let you or Mister Hernandez down because he has threaten to ship us off to China if we don't make a good album. I'm not sure if that was a joke or not. Anyways, we are excited to finally get some music out and see some daylight. :)

our name is stars. - the interview.

UserPostedImage

The first question is simple enough, when did our name is stars. become a band?

nathan.
I think the three of us had no known each other for a good two or three years before we came together to form this band. We were all in bands for a long time, all of which were local or regionally bands, they never went to a large skill. And we had met each other through the other bands we were in. All three of us were in indie bands but they were all a bit different. Alex was in a indie folk, Jay was doing some indie rock, and I was making indie pop with my band. So I don't really know how we became this trio, but I just remember that Jay and I met up again in late 2010, both our bands had kinda broken up around the same time. Then in January or February of last year, we asked Alex to join. I guess we unintentionally formed our name is stars.

Alex, why did you decide to accept the offer these guys made you to join their band or lack thereof?

alex.
It was an easy decision to make. I knew Nathan and I admired him as both a singer-songwriter and performer. And Jason, I wasn't familiar with his work at the time, but Nate sent me a few demos they were working on and I was blown away by Jason's guitar playing. After that I knew I had to join because it was an opportunity of a lifetime, and it's lived up to that. I never thought I'd be part of a band signed to a major record label.

What do you guys consider to be the defining moment or most important moment for this band?

jason.
For me personally, it was the day we all met up in this really crappy studio in New Jersey. We were paying for our own studio time so we couldn't afford anything better, but I think once the three of us got into the studio and everyday for the week we had the studio rented out, we came out with more and more music everyday, that's when I thought we had something good going on or building on something that could have some value.

alex.
I think it was the moments within that time period that Jason is talking about. It didn't start that way because the first song we recorded together, nothing really clicked on it. I'm not sure if it was the song itself we didn't like very much, or the recording didn't sound good...

nathan.
[interrupting] I still love it! [chuckles]

jason.
I listened back to it the other day and I think it was the recording that didn't come out as we expected.

alex.
I don't think the song was bad either, but I think it was mostly just nerves.

nathan.
Yeah, we put a lot of pressure on ourselves to make this band work, unlike our six or seven bands before. I don't think we would have gotten a record deal if we hadn't been. But it made things tough for us. I think once we got the record deal and the financial backing of a label that believed in us, we were able to relax more and kind of really know what each of our roles were within the band. We aren't trying to impress each other anymore. I think when you know that behind that glass window, Ryan Ross Hernandez is handling the soundboard, you want to impress him and that's not a bad thing, but really we're just trying to work together and try to understand each other more than anything else. Which is tough at the start because we all have the same ultimate goal, but you never know the path someone wants to take to accomplish it. We weren't familiar with each other very much when we started the band, so we just had to work past it. And thankfully enough time passed that by the time we had signed a record deal, we all knew each other very well as people and musicians.

Do you feel the sound of the band has evolved from those first demos you recorded, to now with your debut album?

nathan.
Absolutely. We're a band that I don't know if we'll be around for a year or a decade, but we constantly want to be evolving. I'd say the demos we first made were more about finding ourselves as a band. I don't think we've left everything behind from each of the former bands we were in just because we are signed to a label. There are still pieces of our former selves in the songs we're making now. What comes from our past bands, kind of brought us together to form this one, so we probably won't ever leave those influences behind. But we're all in, I want to say late-20s, so we're growing up as people and music listeners too. I know my taste in music has changed from when I was like sixteen, seventeen years old.

jason.
I feel like on one hand it feels like nothing is left from the past, because it's constantly about moving forward. But in the other hand, it feels like everything is just a big collage of what we've done. To get really specific, I feel like our debut record in this band, is more indicative of who we are than anything in the past. It's the first album where we felt that weight of indie rock had been lifted off of us because we don't want to make records like Bon Iver's "For Emma, Forever Ago," or even an Arcade Fire record. Our debut record sounds big and was really epic in the sense that our sound is established as really powerful on this record. It's more us than anything else we ever explored in.

When did hip-hop influences and hip-hop productions come to the picture?

nathan.
Well I think we all found a lot of inspiration in hip-hop music. I remember we had a conversation about maybe getting a hip-hop producer to produce our debut record. I was in New York City last summer, and I remember talking with a few producers and I was talking about the whole hip-hop thing and stuff like that. So around then is when we started exploring that. But it didn't come to fruition until this past January or so. It was like for months before we started recording, we were catching lighting in a bottle and saving it up until we could make it come true.

What hip-hop records were you into?

nathan.
Kanye West's "My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy", was a big one in getting us to think that we might be able to like borrow or be inspired by a lot of these sounds that are happening. It had a lot of theatrical elements that still felt like they had the finger on the pulse as far as the future was concerned. And even before that, "808s & Heartbreak", might get a lot of hate, but I feel like that record made a new style of hip-hop that others caught on to. Drake's "Thank Me Later" and "Take Care", both sound so fresh to us. Especially, "Thank Me Later", it didn't sound like anything else out there, that I had heard at the time. I guess we as an alternative or indie band, can kind of get away with making a bed out of all these sounds that we really just love.

How did meeting Ryan Ross Hernandez and later him, not only signing you to his North Hill Records imprint, but also producing your record come about?

nathan.
It was last year, I think around November or December, he was recording his new album in Electric Lady Studios, the recording studio that Jimi Hendrix built. All the dots connected, because even though Ryan had never produced any hip-hop records, we knew that he had experience in both exploring other sounds in his own records, as well as working or producing for artists that weren't exactly in his realm. He's kind of guy that both as a artist and producer, wants to take risks and have as many colors to paint with as possible.

our name is stars. and Ryan Ross Hernandez sounds like an unlikely collaboration. Why do you think it worked so well?

alex.
It worked well because we constantly want to be pushing ourselves. We want to do different things all the time. I think an artist like Ryan has really done it all, in terms of exploring sounds and making every record he puts out, to sound different from the previous one. He's made pop records, rock records, blues records, soul, Americana. We look up to people like that we are constantly evolving. Personally, I see the world of hip-hop as being in a really good space creatively. People are constantly trying to push borders and be the best. Not just as an attitude, but also the sounds, everything is a new unique sound. I'm mostly talking about Kanye West here. His whole approach that everything has to be unique and has to be high art. We wanted more than anything else adopt that attitude in the studio and respect for our work. The collaboration worked well because Ryan was as excited as us to explore that sort of hip-hop sound and approach. Ryan was almost like a mentor for us. It took us all aback when we realized that he had so much hip-hop knowledge too.

jason.
I think Ryan has like such an extensive knowledge of music that he can be successful in any genre he tries next. He introduced a lot of new things to our music that with any other producer, I don't think we would have ever found out about.

nathan.
Yeah, I feel like that's the thing. When you're working with someone like Ryan Ross Hernandez, you're not just getting a single-minded producer. You're getting a musician who who's capable of a million different things and a composer who's capable of a million different things. He wasn't trying to stuff our music into a single package. It was more so about learning what we wanted to do with the album and helping us to visualize that and accomplish it. And having him mold it as well. It was a musical experience.

If we were to flip the coin, why do you guys think Ryan agreed to take a risk on you?

nathan.
I think this was a unique situation for him. He was able to fully handle the production aspect of things, on his own. I can't speak for Ryan, but when we got into the studio, it felt like this was the kind of sound he always wanted to explore but never could before. I don't necessarily think he was looking for it when we met because he was and still is very invested with folk and Americana music form the 70s, but he's a smart guy, so I think he realized that this was something completely new for him to try. I think instead of signing an established act, he wanted a band like us which he could help put on the map.

Is it true that the first song you sent Ryan was a song that had no verses, just a chorus?

nathan.
[laughs] That is true. I think I met Ryan in New York City, at his apartment. We had a few drinks and I think it was a Thursday night, we talked a lot about music we liked, that we didn't like. He hadn't heard any of our songs, but his people were telling him that it'd be good for him to sit down and just talk with me. He played me some of the stuff he had recorded for his new album, and it was completely different from what we were doing, so I got a little worried. But he told me to send him whatever we were working on to his e-mail, then the following morning I sent him an e-mail with one of our demos and I sent him a song that had no verses or a bridge, it was just the music and a chorus. Which was thankfully enough to impress him.

What's the name of that song? Is it on the debut record?

jason.
It's called "A Night in New York City," and it will be on the album. It won't be the first single, but the label seems pretty intent in making it the second single, which we don't mind because we love that song. We love every song on this record, which is why we don't mind whatever single North Hill Records decides to go with. I think that our music is a departure of what's on the radio right now. A lot of the lyrics that are in hit songs right now are about not giving a fuck, partying, getting drunk. I think that all of our songs have a positive feel to it, without having to dumb down to the lowest denominator. And the way these songs sound is a big thing too, just because it's alternative and I think people are ready to hear that on the radio.

What is the first single then?

nathan.
The first single is a song called "Let's Gamble on Lucky Street". I think that song best describes who we are as a band. It's one of those most, no, it's über-personal to me, yet I think it gives people stuff to relate to. It has a good message and it's not a love song. That was important to us, we told Ryan and Nadia that they could go with whichever song they wanted for our first single, as long as it wasn't a love song, and thankfully they heard us out. Probably if the decision was up to us, we'd still go with this song to be the first single.

You guys can't say if you have any collaborators on the album, but who are some artists that you guys would love to collaborate with in the future?

nathan.
Hey Lolita. I just heard their labelmates of ours. I was a big fan of their EP and I think Arianna has one of the best and most distinctive voices in the industry. I think it'd be cool to collab with them.

alex.
I'd have to say Isaac Lovelock. We've heard all the verses he's dropped on other people's records, and I think it'd be really inserting to see what he could do on one of our songs.

jason.
I think if I said Nadia Berry it would be too obvious, but her solo records have been spectacular. Whether she goes for pop records or indie rock records, she definitely has a clear vision in what she wants to do and I respect that.

Lastly, what do you expect to accomplish with this record? Each of you can answer this question.

alex.
I just hope people listen to it. We don't have any goals in mind, we'll let the record label make their own. But we just hope people enjoy our record and hopefully come out to see us on tour this fall.

jason.
Yeah, I think artists are defined by their live shows. We could make the best record in the world, but if we can't go out every night and prove it to people, they won't care to come out to shows because they can find the same thing by just listening to our record. So we already have a touring band in place, and we've been rehearsing a lot the last few days. We're ready to hit the road.

nathan.
Well the other day we talked on Skype with Ryan and he told us to keep calm, relax, because we were about to go on an upward spiral. We trust Ryan and the label to all in their power to get this record out there, and gives the proper backing to be successful and be around a while. We don't want to drop just want album and disappear. We feel our debut album is just the first stepping stone for us. But we still want our record, even if it's just a debut, to be around forever.

Jared: One of the great things about being signed to North Hill is being on the same label as these guys. We're not all that different sound wise, so it's a no brainer that I think you guys are great, I still play that free EP of yours regularly. People need to keep an eye out, I'm certain you're gonna take over in the coming months.

Arianna: And thank you sooo much for the mention, Nathan. (giggles) So sweet of you, a collaboration would definitely be fun... I eagerly await your debut album.

rolling stone review.

our name is stars. may just be the up-and-coming band with the most to prove with their first single and forthcoming debut album. Not only were they discovered by the modern day legend that is Ryan Ross Hernandez, they also had him as the producer of their record. The band is the first act to come by way of the record label owned by Hernandez and his business partner/girlfriend Nadia Berry, that aren't an established act and are being built by the growing label. The first offering we get from the young band out of New York City, is "Gamble on Fifth Avenue".

If you thought our name is stars. were going to be a poppier version of their counterparts, Riot! in the Boulevard or Misery Loves Company, you'd be wrong. our name is stars. are as different as any band or solo artist out there, if their debut single is any indication to go from. A simple way to describe them is by calling them an indie-pop trio, although their single is much boarder than that.

"Gamble on Fifth Avenue" is an airy, yet complex tune with an amazing beat that is extremely vivacious the whole way through. It's hard to resist listening to this song, with its foot-stomping beat and great energy. Nathan Castle's voice flows seamlessly along the African drum patterns as he growls aggressive lines, "Eight years, four bands, I'm not sure if I want live off nickels and dimes again / This is not for the indie crowd, much less to those in the Jersey Shore / Who wants to trade in their coats for another fucking YouTube act?"

Despite the fact that the song has no set chorus, the infectiousness "oh woah's" that play in the background like gospel vocals over the pounding drumbeat, make this custom ready for stadium sing-alongs. Towards the end of the song, this hip-hop influenced trio softly breaks it down with some snazzy vocoder effects. The track doesn't stay in one tempo for long, taking the listener on an exhilarating ride.

Ryan's production is strong, while never overwhelming the listener. While Castle's exuberant vocals are what shine here, Alex and Jason, both who are multi-instrumentalist, whom create the many layers that surround and carry the frontman's voice. "Gamble on Fifth Avenue" proves that our name is stars. are ready for world domination. And with the backing of music's most powerful couple, they may just do it by year's end.

Lyrics

I busted my head against the bedpost and got blood on my shirt
Went down to the palace and cashed in all the chips I carried
I was a millionaire in six hours and I blew it in three
What a catch, I still can't catch a break

I can't even fall asleep, the nightmares make me fear shutting my eyes
The last time I got a good night sleep
I dreamed that we all had a value lingering above our heads
I shouted when my value was in the negatives
Singing,
Oh woah, oh woah, oh woah oh oh
Oh woah, oh woah, oh woah oh oh

Get ready soldiers, we have been pinned as sellouts by everyone in our hometowns
I guess it was wrong of us to chase our dreams
They say I was happier back when I had nothing - save the bullshit for those who care
Three years ago I could not afford keeping a girl happy, now I have three

I'm not as sad as you may think I am, I now share a bed with an angel who wears Victoria
Who actually cares for how my day went and likes the music my band plays
No need to ask me why I changed, life in Arizona just became a bore

Well, some say I got lucky on a gamble I made
That I traded friends for acquaintances
Sometimes, I appear distant but don't mind me
Those times I just want to be left alone

But I still fear sleep, social media freaks me out
Here are your 140 characters to hate on us
People always find a reason to complain
Even when nothing is wrong, I said nothing is wrong

I'm a sellout for following my dreams
I get less calls from my sister since I moved to New York City
I traded the heat for snowy winter nights

Is our name stars because we want to be stars?
We want to shoot in the air, but the shine isn't necessary
Oh woah, oh woah, oh woah oh oh
Oh woah, oh woah, oh woah oh oh

Well, not even three minutes in and we lost our ways
Eight years, four bands, I'm not sure if I want live off nickels and dimes again
This is not for the indie crowd, much less to those in the Jersey Shore
Who wants to trade in their coats for another fucking YouTube act?

I finally slept for the first time since I moved to the city
I had a dream about meeting a woman with light hair and blue eyes
When I looked into her eyes I felt like a shooting star that did shine
It was a beautiful dream, and every night since then I've slept peacefully
Call me a sellout now

Oh woah, oh woah, oh woah, oh oh
Oh woah, oh woah, oh woah, oh oh

You walked all over me for the very last time, now my smile is genuine and I can afford my own place
I threw my old phone off the thirteenth floor
Yeah, I got new friends now
Who don't criticize my way of living
Maybe my sister shouldn't bother calling
I'll see you and the family come Christmas time

"Gamble on Fifth Avenue" will be available for digital download and radio airplay starting this Sunday, July 29th.

It's accompanying music video will be released on Wednesday, August 1st.

Andros Angelakos: Preordered. This sort of thing looks right up my street. I am very intrigued. It takes a lot to intrigue me too, so well done. I'm not one of these guys who gets captivated by a cloud in a cool shape. People have to work to capture my attention. And you have. Congratulations.

Release date: October 8th, 2012
Format: Digital download, airplay
Genre: Indie pop, pop rock, alternative rock
Label: North Hill Records
Producer(s): Ryan Ross Hernandez
Writer(s): Jason Andrews, Nathan Castle, Alex Manning

It's been two months since our name is stars. stormed the stage at the North Hill Showcase event and got all eyes on them. On that night, they unveiled material that would be on their debut album, "Grandstanding & Bravado (An Anthem for Top 20 Airplay)" being one of those songs. The indie-pop trio are currently on a promotional tour to promote their album coming later this month, and they hope to do so with the of its lead single "Grandstanding & Bravado".

The lead single written by Nathan Castle, composed by Castle, Jason Andrews, and Alex Manning, produced by Ryan Ross Hernandez, "Grandstanding & Bravado" is mainly what the subtitle suggests, an anthem, just bursting at the seams to invade the airwaves. Castle writing style is comparable to that of young Ryan Ross Hernandez with his former band, PANIC. The 29 year old frontman is unafraid to speak uncensored of the industry and take its shots at pop culture. (Is the line "While a GirlSpice record served as background music / I didn't spend a nickel on this record / But I want my nickel back," really a cheap shot at one of his bosses, Nadia Berry, crafty saying that GirlSpice is to pop, what Nickelback is to rock?)

"The song is about the music industry, it's about pop culture as a whole," Castle begins, "But I think some these lyrics would relate to his current generation of people, who are very narcissist and apathetic to the world around them. I've seen a shift in people giving a fuck. People just don't give a fuck anymore. And the music industry has a part in that, and pop culture has a part in that."

our name is stars' are hyper modern in the lead single, flitting through the past and present, taking nothing seriously and taking everything they can, cramming so many allusions into that it's impossible to tell what is intentional and what is accidental. Are they suffering from Celebrity Metaphysical Syndrome already?

Musically, the song is a towering guitar anthem built on wedding-like organs, thundering drums, and singer Nathan Castle's high, pitch perfect vocals. The loosely layered vocal harmonies at its bridge create an almost carefree vibe to it, with Andrews' churning guitar work and Alex Manning doing everything else; from playing the opening weary-eyed organs, to the thumping, loud drum banging. Hernandez's production hand stays laidback, while not adding too many clear additions aside from the trio's work, a faint hand clap can be heard fading in and out at certain points throughout the song. It's hyper catchy feel makes you think whether the band purposely created a future hit single in a song that diss the radio and those hits played all day.

I'm selling hooks you can't deny
Their perfect for radio stations to play all day
I kinda hope they do, I need the cash
So I'll surgically remove my heart
And replace it with an ATM machine
Who am I kidding? I'll take credit too

I threw stones at your window again
Thinking I'd get some blood pumping
While a GirlSpice record served as background music
I didn't spend a nickel on this record
But I want my nickel back

Chase me down the street of a suburban neighborhood
Critics say I need to put more soul in it
Hey TMZ, won't you climb a tree for me?
Hey Pitchfork, sorry we're not hipster indie superstars

I'm half a drag of a single cigarette
The chemicals I carry go straight to your lungs
What a match, you are an addict and I'm a drug dealer

So play this song all day
Top 40 Radio DJ's, please shove it down people's throats
Your listeners don't want variety or honesty, they want the same old shit
All those imperfect songs, with those handsome boys and beautiful girls
Let's just keep singing and dancing all night
As if all in life is parties and boys

Pretty girl, you look like you belong somewhere in Los Angeles
Or are trying to be a model and you already swallow on your knees in New York, hey
Painted faces in the bathroom stalls of the club
They all look the same when you're drunk in the nightlife lights
I drank until I passed out when I was nineteen
Just so now I could hold my liquor 'round the A-list team

I'm half a drag of a single cigarette
The chemicals I carry go straight to your lungs
What a match, you are an addict and I'm a drug dealer

So play this song all day
Top 40 Radio DJ's, please shove it down people's throats
Your listeners don't want variety or honesty, they want the same old shit
All those imperfect songs, with those handsome boys and beautiful girls
Let's just keep singing and dancing all night
As if all in life is parties and boys

You carry no substance nor write your own songs
But you have a pretty face to sell it
So we'll package you to be perfect for the mainstream crowd
You carry no substance nor can you sing
But you have a pretty face to sell it
So we'll package you to be perfect for the mainstream crowd

Don't request your favorite song
(Don't request your favorite song)
Don't request your favorite song
(Don't request your favorite song)
We already know what song you want to hear
So we play six times every hour

So play this song all day
Top 40 Radio DJ's, please shove it down people's throats
Your listeners don't want variety or honesty, they want the same old shit
All those imperfect songs, with those handsome boys and beautiful girls
Let's just keep singing and dancing all night

Ryan: YES! This is fantastic. Your live performance at the North Hill showcase was a great appetizer for what was to come on this album. Now that this track has been released, im already convinced it will be a classic. Lyrically it's quirky and fun, and hey, truthful. You guys are onto something big here, it's a brilliant song and I can imagine it will get fans' heads nodding everywhere.

"Dragging An Anchor" is the second promotional song released through iTunes and after two bombastic, anthemic singles, the third track on the album shows our name is stars' more sensitive and interpersonal side. Nathan Castle's writing approach takes a shift as well, going for a first person narrative tale of growing up in the city. Each line is written with a fierce sincerity that remains as tender as it is frank – and delivered so. Castle's voice soars above the songs with the type of charismatic gusto missing from too many artists in the industry today.

"Without a doubt Dragging An Anchor is one of the more personal songs on the record, it's a real experience for me. I wrote it very early in the recording process and it has remained a favorite of mine," Castle begins, staring off to his side out of a window. "At twenty-nine years old, you're kind of getting into that headspace where your not exactly young, but your not in the middle of your life. You're an adult who has some regrets but they can't halt you. That's why the chorus is very uplifting, and optimistic, despite the hardships. While it might not be the loudest song on the album, it has a loud message to it." Probably the most ear-catching line is when Nate belts out 'I stand up and make love to all your friends / I am not the bitch you want me to be,' which the singer insist is not a joke, "It's not my way to throw in a quick punchline in there. It's a clear line of just standing up for yourself, even if someone else is trying to put you down or belittle you. Is it perfect? No, but in the moment you're kind of blinded."

Sonically, the drum samples stand proud honoring your ears with ocean-waves of reverb echoing over the city-night Sinatra piano and acoustic guitar backdrop. The sing-along gang vocals at the bridge of the song. All of this; set against a harmonizing accordion sound that was added during the production phase with Ryan Ross Hernandez at the helm. While it doesn't carry the same bravado as the songs before it, becoming the slowest song of the band thus far, it doesn't make it any less meaningful in their repertoire.

Another night I fall asleep to the sound of late-night talk shows
The cars outside are speeding and curving the sidewalks
Then you woke me up, with the sound of a wine bottle breaking
Your speech is slurred and your eyes are red
I can't tell if you're drunk or high
Well maybe it's both since your heart is pounding
Just like it did on your 24th birthday last year

You slipped off your dress and slipped into bed
Saying, "We are not, no, we are not a perfect fit"
Yes, I know
I'd have to be mad to say we are forever

Though I can't recall the last time I felt this lost
I've seen enough movies to know
That a guy like me has to struggle 'fore he gets the girl

If you lose yourself at sea
Or an anchor is pulling you down
Stop dragging your feet
Drag it on
And the sound of your sleep
Be the warmest memory you keep
Drag it on, drag it on, drag it on

You say all my friends are real bad kids
'Cause we meet at the end of the night
At a bar in Lower Manhattan
My friends and I, talk on and on
About all our girlfriends
'Cause we like the wifey, model type

Although it's a nice thought
To think I will change one day
Seeing all the times I've been cheated on
And it's funny to think
About how many times I've been letdown
I stand up and make love to all your friends
I am not the bitch you want me to be

If you lose yourself at sea
Or an anchor is pulling you down
Stop dragging your feet
Drag it on
And the sound of your sleep
Be the warmest memory you keep
Drag it on

Oh
My head is fucked
But the friction in my pants says otherwise
'Cause after all that's the only time I feel right
So just go and let your clothes slip off
Tie your tongue
Kiss my chest
Wrap your legs
Around me now
Let my fingers grace your thighs
No one's ever gonna stop me

'Cause now we are
We are a perfect fit
We are the best of kids
We are who we want to be
'Cause even on the day we part
When the time comes and we're in different states
So we go on
And find ourselves ba-ba-back home
Tonight

If you lose yourself at sea
Or an anchor is pulling you down
Stop dragging your feet
Drag it on
And the sound of your sleep
Be the warmest memory you keep
Drag it on

Ooh, ooh, ooh
Ooh, ooh, ooh
Ooh, ooh, ooh

Nadia: You guys are so, so, so good at writing lyrics that really hook me into the song, it's almost like each song has its own story to tell and the lyrics do a great job of putting that across. Great stuff as always from a band who I still think are criminally underrated, I really hope this album brings you guys a lot of success. Fingers crossed!

Title: "To All the Girls I've Yet to Sleep With"
Release: January 7th, 2013
Genre: Indie pop, alternative rock, power pop
Length: 3:41
Label: North Hill Records
Producer(s): Ryan Ross Hernandez
Writer(s): Jason Andrews, Nathan Castle, Alex Manning

Opening the album is the theatrical intro, "To All the Girls I've Yet To Sleep With", which serves as the perfect introduction to the sights and sounds our name is stars. try to achieve with their debut record. Starting with lead singer and frontman Nathan Castle singing softly over a piano melody, before thirty seconds into the affair, his bandmates join him with swirling drums and a cheery horn section. The vocals and the music serve each other, as whenever the music raises, so do Castle's impressive vocal range display itself. Lyrically, the trio from the southwest aren't afraid at all to tackle subject matters that not even veterans in music dare to touch. Ranging from pop culture, to social networking, religion and politics, to former lovers. Nathan shifts with ease from narcissist, to a right-wing conservative, to a future father sharing some words of wisdom to the ones that come after him, and ending with a slow tempo as he started, taking the role of a scorned ex.

"The intro is showing the listener the landscape of what their about to hear for the next sixty minutes or so. That's why it doesn't stay in one tempo for too long because the record doesn't stay in on tempo for three straight songs in a row. We're always changing it up and doing different things so that no two songs sound the same, so if you put this song on an equalizer, everything will be up and down because we're a little hyperactive," Nathan chuckled as he further explained. "'Can we take the length of this record to talk about me?' That is suppose to sound as selfish as it does. It's a pop culture thing, which I hate. That's why I sing the first two verses as if I'm in my last breath, because to me that shit's tragic. As the song goes on, it's more my personal views. I think with every verse being different, it highlights lyrically, where we're going with the record too."

"Nate brought us the lyrics, but it took us a while to decide what sounds went with it. We always knew we wanted it to be the introduction to the album, that's all we knew," Alex Manning, the band's multi-instrumentalist and main composer begins. "This song went through a lot of phases because we couldn't agree on what we wanted it to sound like. At one point it was entirely on piano, then it was kind of marching band style. It took us months before we decided to just include everything each of us wanted from the song, hopefully without overloading it. I think the three of us are happy with how it sounds on the final product."

The band might have agreed for the best direction, if the intro serves any indication, the listeners will be taken on a road over the length of their debut LP. While Nathan Castle may serve as ringleader, Manning and Andrews aren't any less important to what make this trio an exciting indie trio to look out for.

"To All the Girls I've Yet to Sleep With"
Lyrics by Nathan Castle.
Composed by Jason Andrews, Alex Manning Jr.
Produced by Ryan Ross Hernandez.

So can we please take the length of this record
To talk about me
Talk about my views on the world
Talk about lost loves, talk about girls
Talk about politics, talk about me

Can we please take the length of this song
To talk about me
And my hatred for most postmodern things
Like trust funds and fake breasts
Like drug dealers and Starbucks
Reality shows and gossip sites

I know I can't complain I only have myself to blame
But celebrities on Twitter
Are pissing me off
With their irrelevant 140 characters
Oh no

Celebrities on Twitter, we all know who you are

If the tea parties correct
I should buy my kids a gun
And teach them the good values of the lord
“Son, you shouldn't have sex until you're married,
But it better be to a nice, southern Christian girl
Who reads the Bible nightly
And only does missionary”

Well I don't believe in miracles
I just believe in what my eyes can see
Earthquakes, hurricanes, natural disasters
If mother nature is pissed, I don't blame her

To the generation that follows I say
“You should never judge a color of a skin
Don't you ever judge someone by their kin
Never believe in leaders that promise hope and change”

These lessons do not matter
Because I wrote you a note
It read:
“Your love
It just doesn't shine enough
I'm looking for sunlight not just twilight
That's why all the flowers you plant have died
I haven't found my own sunlight
But at least I can wear sunglasses now”
