"Red Lips" is the second song on Hey Lolita's debut album, and is a perfect follow up from the first track, "Pretty Lights", which was released as the lead single to the record. The song features classic Hey Lolita songwriting, adding a twist of usual humour into the mix that is heard on a number of songs from the duo. Jared Nevo takes control of the production as always for the track, while Arianna takes lead for the vocals, singing about what seems to be a popular topic with her, sleazy men. Jared is also heard in the background at parts of the song, playing this sleazy character. Although Arianna insists the topic of the song is appropriate, as she confesses she's had plenty of "awkward moments".
"It's quite funny how these songs come to be, but I don't just write them because I get a giggle out of them, I'm writing this stuff taken from the most awkward moments of my life! Well, sometimes at least... I'm not as desirable and chased after as some of these songs make you believe," she explains, breaking into a smile at the end of her sentence. "This is one of the real experiences though, Jared helped me write it, and he's quite talented at writing from a woman's perspective, it's wonderful! A lot of the chorus was done by him, I really don't think of myself that highly, that would be awful if I had done those parts, but I didn't, honest."
When talking about his contribution to the song, Jared added, "I don't have a vagina, and I'm not sleazy, but I've sat back and watched these experiences before, so I've got a pretty good idea of how it all works. Maybe I was a lusted over woman in my past life?" he jokes. "Our previous stuff on the EP had that classic feel to it that I wanted to carry on with this album, we don't make music with a radio hit in mind, we just make what we like, and this is the result."
With a retro urban feel to the track, "Red Lips" has a slight old school vibe, mixing a relaxed hip-hop beat with acoustic guitar, expanding on the sound heard on their very first EP that made people fall in love with the duo in the first place. Arianna's vocals are as seductive as ever throughout the song, as she croons her way through the track in a laidback manner, before moving into the final chorus where she puts her impressive range on show, singing in a higher key while she belts out the final few lines in the background.
