Newly signed artist, Mercedes Payne, seems to be creating quite a name for herself recently. After being signed as one of the first acts to the newly re-launched Hot Eye Records, Miss P has went on to support boyband sensation, Weekend, on their first world tour, released her first single which received critical praise for bringing something new to the table and is also rumoured to be working with some big names despite being on the music scene for a few months. With 'Shine On' being released today we also got to hear a new track too (unknown to Mercedes). This track is titled 'Kiss The Dirt' and is set to be included on her upcoming debut album later this year. 'Kiss The Dirt' is an R&B song infused with elements of rock, more aggressive than her debut however still sounding smooth enough to be easy on the ears. She sings "I may be living (uh) the high life but it came at a cost, had to sacrifice" and "You say I'm lucky to have a career. Well b*tch I worked my ass off to get here" in the verses, highlighting how much hard work this young lady has put in to achieve her dream. The chorus seems quieter in comparison to the rest of the song, which makes it sound very demo-ish however the rest of the song sure makes up for this glitch. The single was written by Mercedes herself and produced by KOOKIE, who also produced her acclaimed debut single 'Shine On'. After hearing a very different sound with her first single I expected this to be very unique too but somehow this song sounds generic in comparison to 'Shine On' however it is still a good song with a lovely cool vibe just not anything groundbreaking. The 19 year old is experimenting and having fun with her music, clearly demonstrated on this track. In time she'll find her sound and I'm sure we have a LOT more to come from this lady. Overall score: B+
