topLADs' final performance at the Carnival of Sounds
September 22, 2012
Bowmanville, Ontario
Mosport Park Raceway
The crowd erupts as a remixed version of Better Than Your Average Joe belts through the speakers surrounding the front of the stage, the track goes on for about thirty seconds before the song turns into dubstep, making the crowd dance around as the words. "I am better than your average Joe, do you still believe me?" repeat a couple of times, with the band walking onto the stage to a massive applause before the last line says "You'll never know happiness like this..." and as soon as the last word is spoken, Chris plays the intro to Better Than Your Average Joe twice before the rest of the instruments kick in. Rory, Chris and Zak jump to the bass drum's beat, Rory shouting into the microphone. "Jump, jump, jump, jump, jump... Now do the walk!" They turn to face the left of the stage and start walking on the spot along with most of the crowd before the first verse started. "Sleeping beside me, all hung over
Are you pleased to see me?
When you realise that's he's coming home
Are you pleased to see me?
'cause we talked, then we walked for about an eternity
We shared drinks, then a kiss and then things got a little dirty
He's stepping through the door, Canada!"
He points the microphone to the crowd as they sing the words, "He's not pleased to see me." Rory jumps off the stage and climbs up the security railings separating the stage from the crowd and stands on top of the railing with security guards holding him so he doesn't fall. "You know the words! Sing!"
"You don't need him
You need me
Don't give him all that shit about how it's not you, it's me
Don't say it was the drinks
I know how you think
You want to be here with me"
Rory looks down and high fives some of the fans in the crowd, still standing on top of the railing as the song's intro repeats. He then jumps off, heading back onto the stage.
"I'm better than your average Joe
Do you still believe me?
Tell you things that I know that no one else knows
Do you still believe me?
'cause we kissed for a while, while you were in denial
Sweaty nights for a smile
Are you pleased to see me?
You're asking for more, while he's in tears on the floor
I guess you believe me
You don't need him
You need me
Don't give him all that shit about how it's not you, it's me
Don't say it was the drinks
I know how you think
You want to be here with me
And you'll never know happiness like this
He makes you cry, I make you beg for a kiss
Swapping sadness and pain for eternal bliss
It's an oportunity too good to miss"
Rory stands on the speakers on the front of the stage and points the microphone into the crowd. "Canada, sing for me!" he smiles as the crowd sing the outro to the song, with Rory just watching with the microphone pointing to the crowd.
"Sleeping beside me, all hung over
Are you pleased to see me?
When you realise that's he's coming home
Are you pleased to see me?
I'm better than your average Joe
Do you still believe me?
He's stepping through the door
He's not pleased to see me"
"Thank you, Canada!" Rory shouts, smiling. "We're topLADs and we're from England, how are you all doing today?" the crowd cheer, positively. "Good to hear it. Anyways, how many people have heard of us before?" the crowd cheer again, they were following his every word and he loved it. "This song was written about my lovely girlfriend before I made her mine because she turned me down. It's not as confusing as it sounds but... yeah... This song's called Wrapped Around Your Finger!"
"You're the best thing that's happened to me
All I wanted was you, can't you see? Can't you see?
But when I picked up the courage to even try
No was the answer and alone I lie, alone I lie
'cause when the suns out, I'll pull the blinds down
I'm not in the mood for happiness
'cause when I feel high, you pull me down, down
Broken and wanting everything to turn around, around
Felt a real connection, you were my satisfaction
Got the choice between everyone or you, I picked you
And I waited for a three lettered answer
But little did I knew, I got two, I got two
'cause when the suns out, I'll pull the blinds down
I'm not in the mood for happiness
'cause when I feel high, you pull me down, down
Broken and wanting everything to turn around, around
You've got me wrapped around your finger
You got me left with a taste in my mouth, so bitter
I guess my flaw is that I'm not a quitter
So I try and try again but I'm not getting nearer
I cannot take this anymore
You got me wrapped around your finger
I cannot take this anymore
You got me wrapped around your finger
I cannot take this, I cannot take this
You got me wrapped around your finger
You push me away, but I come back for more
You got me, you got me
'cause when the suns out, I'll pull the blinds down
I'm not in the mood for happiness
'cause when the suns out, I'll pull the blinds down
I'm not in the mood for happiness
'cause when I feel high, you pull me down, down
Broken and wanting everything to turn around, around
'cause when the suns out, I'll pull the blinds down
I'm not in the mood for happiness
'cause when I feel high, you pull me down, down
Broken and wanting everything to turn around, around
You've got me wrapped around your finger
You got me left with a taste in my mouth, so bitter
I guess my flaw is that I'm not a quitter
So I try and try again but I'm not getting nearer"
"You guys are fucking amazing, I hope you know that! So... Who went out and bought our debut album, Let's Skip The Minor Details? If you guys are really topLADs yourselves, buy the album if you haven't. We're gonna try and make this number 1! We'll give Izzy Merjos a little friendly competition, right?" the crowd cheers. "She's incredible and it'd be amazing if we could chart above her at least once." George does a little drums solo as Rory talks. "This next song is called Deal With It and it goes out to all those who don't like me or us. Follow my lead!" Rory does a 'We Will Rock You' stomp stomp clap, which the crowd also does.
"Thumping head and a bottle of jack
Guess I should have stopped, but I never look back
Drinking so much that my kidneys are ready to pack
Strobe lighting in the room, a nightmare for the epileptic
Got a number from a lovely bird, guess I should have kept it
You got a problem with me, but I don't give a shit
We live separate lives, so deal with it
They tell me to stop, but I'm never gonna quit
Deal with it
I've got a one track system in my mind
I'm sticking to the plan even if you testify
This is what I'm like so deal with it
Bloodshot eyes that beam so wide
Not ready to stop while I'm still flying high
My girl thinks I'm meeting my parents, whoops I guess I lied
Strobe lighting in the room, a nightmare for the epileptic
Got a number from a lovely bird, guess I should have kept it
You got a problem with me, but I don't give a shit
We live separate lives, so deal with it
They tell me to stop, but I'm never gonna quit
Deal with it
I've got a one track system in my mind
I'm sticking to the plan even if you testify
This is what I'm like so deal with it
We live separate lives, deal with it
You're not on my mind, deal with it
To your rules we won't abide, deal with it
Deal with it
We live separate lives, deal with it
You're not on my mind, deal with it
To your rules we won't abide, deal with it
So deal with it
You got a problem with me, but I don't give a shit
We live separate lives, so deal with it
They tell me to stop, but I'm never gonna quit
Deal with it
I've got a one track system in my mind
I'm sticking to the plan even if you testify
This is what I'm like so deal with it
You got a problem with me, but I don't give a shit
We live separate lives, so deal with it
They tell me to stop, but I'm never gonna quit
Deal with it
I've got a one track system in my mind
I'm sticking to the plan even if you testify
This is what I'm like..."
He holds the mic out to the crowd as they sing "So deal with it." the band then go straight into their next song, Ten Years Ago. Rory sits on the front of the stage and sings calmly and peacefully, with the crowd swaying to the song. Chris playing his acoustic guitar starts strumming gentle chords as Rory starts singing.
"Ten years ago today, I let you slip away
Couldn't hold on much longer
And everyday's the same, I still scream your name
Because your name's all that I've got left of you
I tried to numb the pain
With alcohol but I'm still going insane
And nothing's been the same, just waiting for a change
Because I can't sit around and wait for your forever
Ten years from that day, the pain won't wash away
And I'm trying, trying to forget
Ten years from that day and I still hear your name
Ringing through my head
Ever since you walked away
From my life, it's all been clouds and rain
And I swear to God, I'd give up the money and the fame
Just to get thirty minutes in your arms again
Ten years from that day, the pain won't wash away
And I'm trying, trying to forget
Ten years from that day and I still hear your name
Ringing through my head
And I can't go on, holding on to hope that I won't remember a thing
Ten years from that day
Why did you go without one last goodbye?
No one to hold me or say good night, sleep tight
All I do when I think of you is cry out my eyes
But it's too late to change a thing, it ended ten years ago on this night
Ten years from that day, the pain won't wash away
And I'm trying, trying to forget
Ten years from that day and I still hear your name
Ringing through my head
And I can't go on, holding on to hope that I won't remember a thing
Ten years from that day"
Rory wipes a little tear from his eye as he finishes singing, the crowd sang every word with him and it made him feel better about the song's meaning. He stood up and spoke into the microphone. "Thank you, Bowmanville. This is our last song now, and I can't wait until we see you again one day. This is Good Morning! Let's go fucking mental!" the crowd make their loudest cheer of the set so far, with Rory heading over to his programming booth and as the band start playing the intro to Good Morning, Rory adds in electro effects before adding in some dubstep while the rest of the band play. The crowd go wild as they play the intro, but then Rory stops using the booth and starts singing as the chorus starts, jumping off the stage again, standing behind the barrier.
"We're separating the differences
Deciding who's at fault for each problem
We made the stories quite convincing
We'd fake loads of problems just to watch you solve them
I'd give or take a couple nasty shots to the head
I'd take them if it means you're not taking them instead
I won't listen to the people saying that I am the fool
For still holding you in my arms pretending it's cool"
Rory jumps up onto the top of the barrier and dives into the crowd with his wireless microphone in hand. He crowd surfs whilst singing.
"It's a good morning
It's a good morning
It's a good morning
To set the record straight
And I'll hold you in my arms and tell you it's okay
I got you and you got me, no matter what they say
It's a good morning
It's a good morning today"
He stops crowd surfing and keeps singing, walking through the crowd. He hugs people in the crowd.
"We're separating right from wrong
Filtering the results and carrying on
We'll still never learn, our hope is still one hundred percent gone
But for the purposes of this relationship, can we try to get along?"
I'd give or take a couple nasty shots to the head
I'd take them if it means you're not taking them instead
I won't listen to the people saying that I am the fool
For still holding you in my arms pretending it's cool
It's a good morning
It's a good morning
It's a good morning
To set the record straight
And I'll hold you in my arms and tell you it's okay
I got you and you got me, no matter what they say"
Rory shouts into the microphone. "LADs and LADettes! If you know us, you know what we're about to do... I want everybody around me to separate and spread out. I want to make the biggest mosh pit we've ever had right here in Bowmanville!" the crowd clap to the beat of the bass drum and separate, leaving a massive open space in the middle of the crowd. Rory and a few others start doing push ups in the pit, before standing up. He starts whispering the lyrics.
"It's a good morning
It's a good morning today
It's a good morning, baby
It's a good morning..."
The cymbals crash and the guitar starts shredding as the crowd all run into eachother inside the mosh pit. People getting knocked over everywhere and trampled on. Rory also moshes with the crowd, falling over a couple of times but getting back up laughing. He then starts singing again whilst all the chaos is going on around him.
"We need to sort things out
I don't know what you're talking about
We're constantly arguing again and again
But please listen to me because I don't want this to end
I'd give or take a couple nasty shots to the head
I'd take them if it means you're not taking them instead
I won't listen to the people saying that I am the fool
For still holding you in my arms pretending it's cool
It's a good morning
It's a good morning
It's a good morning
To set the record straight
And I'll hold you in my arms and tell you it's okay
I got you and you got me, no matter what they say
It's a good morning
It's a good morning today"
The crowd erupt and Rory heads back up to the stage, clapping as well. "You guys have been fucking awesome! Thank you Bowmanville! Enjoy the rest of the show!" he throws his microphone into the crowd, no longer working after the speakers were turned off and unplugged. They walk off the stage to a loud response from the crowd.
