1 - Formally Informal

This song is about the change in the generation today from the past generations. How people went from looking very clean and classy to looking like trash and relying on "swag" to get them through life. The song was written by Dan and Kaolin. The song starts off with a weird wobble sound and then goes into an electronic sound with a drum machine in the back. The track is more of a hard style electronic rock song then anything

Lyrics

What is wrong with?
The kids today?
Its like they only care about their looks
Can we just go back
To the time
When we would actually care what we looked like

I don't want to live with these kids
I don't want to live with these kids
But now its done and I see what is wrong

Lets just go back
To a simpler time
When we would realize
That we need to live a classy life
X2

They want to know whats right
When they are so wrong
What do we do?
When we used to look alright

I don't want to live with these kids
I don't want to live with these kids
But now its done and I see what is wrong

Lets just go back
To a simpler time
When we would realize
That we need to live a classy life
X2

2 - The Back Booth(Pt. 2)

The Back Booth(Pt. 2) is written as a sequel to the bands song "The Back Booth(A Drink and A Cigarette) from their album "Doesn't Mean Its Legal." The song is about a girl who has had a relationship with a man but leaves him to get with someone else. Even though she says she is over the first guy every time she is with the new man she can't get the first guy off of her mind. This is one of the more heavier/rock songs on the album and has hard jumpy guitar and drums throughout. The song was written by Matt Urie.

Lyrics

Who is this guy?
What is his name?
Is it true what they say
That you wish, he was me
Oh darling you know, I'm what you need

You can hope and pray
That when you're in bed with him
That he'll be, all thats on your mind
But oh no, we both know
That it will be me

Did you tell him?
That its all a lie
And in a matter of time
You'll kiss him goodbye
And throw him to the curb
Just like every other guy

You can hope and pray
That when you're in bed with him
That he'll be, all thats on your mind
But oh no, we both know
That it will be me

3 - Destruction Of The King

This song was written about how people need something to fall back on and something to follow or they wont be able to operate. Its impractically written about how people need a religion or something to believe in. The song starts out with just drums and vocals and picks up with a popier chorus. The songs was written by Dan, and Matt

Lyrics

Its another time
When we find oursleves
Starring into the sky

We're not alone
There's more out there then we really know
Do you actually think?
That we are alone?

We need to be smarter than this
And realize
He does not exist
There's more out there then we really know

We're not alone
There's more out there then we really know
Do you actually think?
That we are alone?

4 - Where's The Reason?

This song is a short little acoustic "diddy" inspired by 20's music. The song is about the biggest question, what is the meaning of life? The song is a simple ukulele and vocal song with trumpets and orchestral instruments supporting it the songs was written by Matt and Nick

Lyrics

When I wake in the morning
I'll ask myself
What do I need to do?
I need to go find you and run down the street
Will you all just come and sing with

So we can figure out
What the point to all this is
We want to live and make it better then this
But now we'll all figure out
What the meaning to all this is

I don't really care I'm going to play in the rain
If you care about me
Then I care about you

So we can figure out
What the point to all this is
We want to live and make it better then this
But now we'll all figure out
What the meaning to all this is

5 - Evolution

This song is used as a transfer track showing the change in style from the more rock/electronic and modern sound to more of a classical/orchestral style/sound like the bands first new single "Mark My Words." There aren't any vocals in the song but in the beginning it sounds like a radio broadcast saying that they've lost contact and the feed to continue on the cd/style of music

6 - Guns

This song was written while Matt was living on the street and was contemplating suicide. The song starts off with jazz piano and singing and then goes into a med tempo chorus slower then the previous tracks on the album. The track has a much different feel then the first half of the album and demonstrates the change in styles

Lyrics

I'm done here
This is not the same
I feel like I'm just in your way
I'm so done here
Somebody help me know
If what I feel is real
Or if its just a dream

I have a gun to my head
Will you be sad when I'm dead?
This is just another
Try to hold back the pain to cry
I just can't deal with this everyday

Would you be sad
If I ran away?
I'll leave it all if you're not in my way
So done here

I have a gun to my head
Will you be sad when I'm dead?
This is just another
Try to hold back the pain to cry
I just can't deal with this everyday

7 - Stay With Me

Possibly the weirdest and most unique song on the album "Stay With Me" was written by Dan about his last girlfriend about four months prior to work beginning on the album. The songs lyrics are somewhat poppy and could be used on a modern day pop song but the song they used them for is like I said, possibly one of the strangest tracks ever created in the industry. The verses have a strange "erry" feel to with random noises happening in the background while the chorus is more "poppy" and catchy

Lyrics

I'm on top of the world
When we're together
I'm in the pits of hell
When you're away
All I need is for you to stay
Here with me
All night baby

Stay with me
Just for one more minute
Stay with me
And I'll know
That we're just fine

I've never felt this way before
Its more than I will ever know
This is just what I need
When you're right next to me
I want to make you my queen
And you'll be the queen of everything

Stay with me
Just for one more minute
Stay with me
And I'll know
That we're just fine

8 - The Hardest Part Of Waking Up

Did we say that the last track was possibly the weirdest track on the album? Well we take that back. This track is probably the most odd, weird, track anyone will ever hear in their life. Not quite sure what the band was trying to accomplish with this track other then just experimenting with something completely new and odd. The song was written by Nick and Dan. One thing about this track is that it will give any normal sane person nightmares

Lyrics

Its hard enough to know you're gone
And it's not enough to say goodbye
Tell me if this feel right
Because I can't fall asleep tonight

The hardest part of waking up
Is knowing you're not mine
And I don't want to wake up
If you're not by my side

I've been pressing on for days
And it all looks the same
I can't wait forever
On something you're not sure about

The hardest part of waking up
Is knowing you're not mine
And I don't want to wake up
If you're not by my side

9 - Mark My Words

Mark My Words is known as the "return" track for the band and was the first single from the album. The song is about a man who is so in love with a girl that it causes him to lose his mind and go crazy. The song is also about loving someone so much that you don't think you can live without them. This song was written by all four members of the band.

Lyrics

I come quietly
A silent entry
For a haunting
Can you even hear me?
As I whisper “usually”
If we’d die what would it mean?
I’m coming for your soul
Brace yourself for impact

There is nothing to me
And nothing left for me to lose
I’ve felt humiliation
All because of you
Trust me I’ll come and get you
Mark my words

I deny your sympathy
And never asked for your pity
I’ve been looking for every sign of life
But now it seems as though I’ve died

There is nothing to me
And nothing left for me to lose
I’ve felt humiliation
All because of you
Trust me I’ll come and get you
Mark my words

Break me down into a small excuse for a man
I can not speak
This is what you thought
This is what you tough me

There is nothing to me
And nothing left for me to lose
I’ve felt humiliation
All because of you
Trust me I’ll come and get you
Mark my words

10 - Expect The Unexpected

The song begins with a slow acoustic guitar and then goes into a faster drum beat. It goes against the second half of the album's style but is definitely one of the albums strongest tracks. This song was written about former Suburban Sunrise singer Nicole Woods who passed away a little over a year ago in a tragic car crash. The world knew that her and Matt were best friends and in the song we hear the Matt feels as though it's his fault that she's gone and that he misses her. This song has probably the saddest lyrics on the full album. The lyrics were written by Matt.

Lyrics

I remember when I was just a kid
Living life without a care in the world
And now everything seems to change
I've lost my friends my family
I just want to go back
Back to when I
Could say

I'm happy that we're all here
And I promise to never leave your side
I don't want to deal with this pain
Day after day

I miss you so much
You were my best friend
And you were gone just a blink of an eye
I feel like its my fault
I could have been there
To stop all hell from breaking lose

I'm happy that we're all here
And I promise to never leave your side
I don't want to deal with this pain
Day after day

But now I know
That I loved you
And that
You loved me too

I'm happy that we're all here
And I promise to never leave your side
I don't want to deal with this pain
Day after day

SUBURBAN SUNRISE - FORMALLY INFORMAL - ALBUM REVIEW

UserPostedImage

Formally Informal is the fourth studio full length album by American rock band Suburban Sunrise. This album marks the return of the band after a year and a half hiatus after the death of former vocalist Nicole Woods. The album is definitely something we would have expected from the band after their breakout album "Torn, Filthy, Love" in 2010. The album starts off with a song that we would have heard on the bands TFL album. The song features cello and some classical instruments like what we hear through the entire album. The first half of the album(tracks 1-5) has more of a rock feel but the song "Where's The Reason" shows a different style from the first 3 songs. The song is an acoustic track that is accompanied by trumpet and has a a 1940's feel. Track 5 "Evolution" is a full instrumental song that shows the transition from the modern feel of the first 4 songs to a more classical/experimental feel of the second half. The top tracks from the first half are "Formally Informal", and "Where's The Reason." The second half of the album is more of an experimental/rock feel and features more classical instruments such as violin, cello, accordion, piano and bells on several of the tracks. Some songs from the second half to take notice to are "Stay With Me", "The Hardest Part of Waking Up", and "Expect The Unexpected." One track that has sparked the interest of many is the song "The Hardest Part Of Waking Up." The song is one of the most unique things made by any band today and would give any normal human being nightmares. The second half also features the single from the album "Mark My Words." Another track to sit up and take notice of is "Expect The Unexpected." This track seems like it would fit in more with the first half of the album but is definitely one of the top tracks. The song is written about former SS singer Nicole Woods and is the one song from this album where you can hear the emotion behind the lyrics and vocals. Overall we give the album 8/10. It's definitely a good return for the band but we just wish that the first half of the album was as strong as the second half. Be sure to pick up the album on September 1st and check out our track ratings below!

1: Formally Informal - 7/10
2: The Back Booth(Pt. 2) - 6/10
3: Destruction Of The King - 8/10
4: Where's The Reason - 8/10
5: Evolution - 5/10
6: Guns - 7/10
7: Stay With Me -8/10
8: The Hardest Part Of Waking Up - 9/10
9: Mark My Words - 9/10
10: Expect The Unexpected -10/10

Overall: 8/10
