6. Life Is A Highway (Rascal Flatts cover)

London's very own topLADs are one of the leading upcoming British rock bands, who have had their share of early success, holding a number 1 single and the Fan Choice Award's Best New Artist award, and are expected to be a big name in the future. The band field a strong track list in their debut album which features their #1 single, Good Morning and their top 10 single, Better Than Your Average Joe. The album consists of 5 songs written by topLADs and a cover of Rascal Flatts' hit single 'Life Is A Highway'.

The band's lead singer, Rory Delaney, has been a huge part in promoting the band with his relationship with Suzie Stockholm, which brought a lot of controversy surrounding his friendship with fashion icon, Veronica Carter as the two were alleged to be having an affair, which both Rory and Veronica denied. Also his popularity with the ladies has stirred up a few rumours in the past but his behaviour has seemed to calmed down recently. The singer also is a hit with the fans and crowds because of the amount of interaction he has with the fans while gigging and his touring antics, such as taking the microphone out into the crowd and moshpitting with the fans (which led to him breaking his arm) and drinking with the fans after the gigs.

The album is set to be a success with the band's fans and music listeners who are yet to hear of the band, but is only a taster of the bands upcoming full album, 'Uprising', which will contain 3 songs from the mini album and is set for release in late 2012/early 2013.

Track One
Deal With It
3:25

Track: Deal With It
Genre: Alternative Rock
Label: Liberation/Nomad Records
Recorded: Kings Cross, London
Produced by: Taylor Asbridge
Writen by: Rory Delaney
Personnel: Rory Delaney (Vocals), Chris Fielding (Guitar), Zak Collins (Bass guitar), George Edwards (Drums)

Deal With It sets a powerful start to the album, giving the listener a sense of aggression towards those who don't like him, but keeps up with Rory's party antics, singing about his feelings whilst drinking in a club. The song starts off with a "We Will Rock You" style drum intro, which maintains throughout the whole song. The verses contain the vocals, bass and drums, with the guitar kicking in for the choruses and the breakdown, the song isn't one to get the crowd jumping until the final chorus, where the song gets more energetic and a little bit heavier with the guitars and the drums get faster, making the last chorus one to mosh to at a live concert.

Rory's say

"Deal With It was written while I was with Suzie. I was getting heaps of abuse through Twitter from people who didn't like me, didn't like Suzie or just genuinely wanted someone to shout at and chose me, so this song was written as a massive 'fuck you' to people who don't like me. It's not my problem if a few people don't like me and I thought I'd just express it through a song."

Lyrics

Thumping head and a bottle of jack
Guess I should have stopped, but I never look back
Drinking so much that my kidneys are ready to pack
Strobe lighting in the room, a nightmare for the epileptic
Got a number from a lovely bird, guess I should have kept it

You got a problem with me, but I don't give a shit
We live separate lives, so deal with it
They tell me to stop, but I'm never gonna quit
Deal with it
I've got a one track system in my mind
I'm sticking to the plan even if you testify
This is what I'm like so deal with it

Bloodshot eyes that beam so wide
Not ready to stop while I'm still flying high
My girl thinks I'm meeting my parents, whoops I guess I lied
Strobe lighting in the room, a nightmare for the epileptic
Got a number from a lovely bird, guess I should have kept it

You got a problem with me, but I don't give a shit
We live separate lives, so deal with it
They tell me to stop, but I'm never gonna quit
Deal with it
I've got a one track system in my mind
I'm sticking to the plan even if you testify
This is what I'm like so deal with it

We live separate lives, deal with it
You're not on my mind, deal with it
To your rules we won't abide, deal with it
Deal with it
We live separate lives, deal with it
You're not on my mind, deal with it
To your rules we won't abide, deal with it
So deal with it

You got a problem with me, but I don't give a shit
We live separate lives, so deal with it
They tell me to stop, but I'm never gonna quit
Deal with it
I've got a one track system in my mind
I'm sticking to the plan even if you testify
This is what I'm like so deal with it

You got a problem with me, but I don't give a shit
We live separate lives, so deal with it
They tell me to stop, but I'm never gonna quit
Deal with it
I've got a one track system in my mind
I'm sticking to the plan even if you testify
This is what I'm like so deal with it

Track Two
Better Than Your Average Joe
4:51

Track: Better Than Your Average Joe
Genre: Pop-punk Rock
Label: Liberation/Nomad Records
Recorded: Kings Cross, London
Produced by: Taylor Asbridge
Writen by: Rory Delaney
Personnel: Rory Delaney (Vocals), Chris Fielding (Guitar), Zak Collins (Bass guitar), George Edwards (Drums)

Better Than Your Average Joe is a higher tempo song and is the most upbeat on the album. The lyrics are based on being in an affair caused by a one night stand which turns to the narrator trying to convince the woman to exit her relationship for himself, and getting caught. The song kicks straight into the first verse with Rory singing clean vocals with George providing backup to them at the end of each line. The guitar simply chugs over the verse and the bass plays an energetic but powerful rhythm before the chorus kicks in. Rory and George then sing the chorus together with a distorted guitar playing behind it and a basic bassline. The second verse is played in the same style as the first and so does the second chorus uintil the extension on the end of the chourus where Rory's singing more powerfully. After the second chorus the song ends with another verse, but with a clean guitar strumming chords with lots of reverb and echo behind it and no bass, and only Rory's vocals.

Rory's say

"Better Than Your Average Joe is definitely the most fun song on the album. It's full of energy, it's powerful and it's a great song to play live. I wrote the song on the feeling of making a mistake that you learn to welcome and accept, but perhaps wishing you had gone around it in a different way. So in this context it's getting drunk on a night out with a female friend, getting drunk, telling eachother things about themselves that no one knows and then ending up having a one night stand. Then waking up the morning after in her bed, while her man is on the way back from work or whereever he was and catching you together the morning after. The song also mentions about wanting the woman you had the one night stand with to be with you. But the song can be thought of in many ways, saying that a mistake can turn into something good, but will always have it's concequences. I'm not condoning cheating though, guys. Don't cheat on anyone and use 'Rory sang about it in a song' as an excuse, haha."

Lyrics

Sleeping beside me, all hung over
Are you pleased to see me?
When you realise that's he's coming home
Are you pleased to see me?
'cause we talked, then we walked for about an eternity
We shared drinks, then a kiss and then things got a little dirty
He's stepping through the door
He's not pleased to see me

You don't need him
You need me
Don't give him all that shit about how it's not you, it's me
Don't say it was the drinks
I know how you think
You want to be here with me

I'm better than your average Joe
Do you still believe me?
Tell you things that I know that no one else knows
Do you still believe me?
'cause we kissed for a while, while you were in denial
Sweaty nights for a smile
Are you pleased to see me?
You're asking for more, while he's in tears on the floor
I guess you believe me

You don't need him
You need me
Don't give him all that shit about how it's not you, it's me
Don't say it was the drinks
I know how you think
You want to be here with me
And you'll never know happiness like this
He makes you cry, I make you beg for a kiss
Swapping sadness and pain for eternal bliss
It's an oportunity too good to miss

Sleeping beside me, all hung over
Are you pleased to see me?
When you realise that's he's coming home
Are you pleased to see me?
I'm better than your average Joe
Do you still believe me?
He's stepping through the door
He's not pleased to see me

Track Three
Wrapped Around Your Finger
4:20

Track: Wrapped Around Your Finger
Genre: Alternative Rock
Label: Liberation/Nomad Records
Recorded: Kings Cross, London
Produced by: Taylor Asbridge
Writen by: Rory Delaney
Personnel: Rory Delaney (Vocals), Chris Fielding (Guitar), Zak Collins (Bass guitar), George Edwards (Drums)

Wrapped Around Your Finger is a much more soothing song through the chorus, but delivers a massive shock with a pacy and rocky chorus as opposed to the calmer verses. Rory's voice is a lot more subtle and chilled throughout the verse whilst the guitar is playing twiddly bits and nice leads which accompanies the verse perfectly. The chorus then jumps in unexpectedly and speeds the song up and makes it more energetic. The song then keeps up the energy for the rest of the song, including the next verse, which instead of having lead guitar it's played with distorted chords and slap bass before heading into the second chorus. The chorus is played identically to the first before extending to the 'You got me wrapped around you finger' section, where the song sounds more like an anthem before stopping suddenly with just a guitar softly strumming as Rory sings 'I can't take this anymore', bringing a softer touch to the song before the first two lines of the chorus are sung softly. The chorus then belts out again, stronger than the first two before the 'You got me wrapped around your finger' section and the chorus repeat again with the song ending on a fading, clean chord.

Rory's say

"Well, what can I say? This song was written about someone very close to me who rejected me twice, although since this song came out everything has changed and now this woman is my gorgeous girlfriend... But the song is still nice and she likes it so I ain't gonna get rid of it. *Cough* Veronica *Cough* Anyway, I guess the point of this song is that you can't always get what you want, no matter how near you think you are to getting it. I was just lucky I guess. Also I believe that no matter what happens in live, you should never give up on what you dream of. I didn't and now I've got an amazing girl by my side. Result LADs, result."

Lyrics

You're the best thing that's happened to me
All I wanted was you, can't you see? Can't you see?
But when I picked up the courage to even try
No was the answer and alone I lie, alone I lie

'cause when the suns out, I'll pull the blinds down
I'm not in the mood for happiness
'cause when I feel high, you pull me down, down
Broken and wanting everything to turn around, around

Felt a real connection, you were my satisfaction
Got the choice between everyone or you, I picked you
And I waited for a three lettered answer
But little did I knew, I got two, I got two

'cause when the suns out, I'll pull the blinds down
I'm not in the mood for happiness
'cause when I feel high, you pull me down, down
Broken and wanting everything to turn around, around

You've got me wrapped around your finger
You got me left with a taste in my mouth, so bitter
I guess my flaw is that I'm not a quitter
So I try and try again but I'm not getting nearer

I cannot take this anymore
You got me wrapped around your finger
I cannot take this anymore
You got me wrapped around your finger
I cannot take this, I cannot take this
You got me wrapped around your finger
You push me away, but I come back for more
You got me, you got me

'cause when the suns out, I'll pull the blinds down
I'm not in the mood for happiness

'cause when the suns out, I'll pull the blinds down
I'm not in the mood for happiness
'cause when I feel high, you pull me down, down
Broken and wanting everything to turn around, around

'cause when the suns out, I'll pull the blinds down
I'm not in the mood for happiness
'cause when I feel high, you pull me down, down
Broken and wanting everything to turn around, around

You've got me wrapped around your finger
You got me left with a taste in my mouth, so bitter
I guess my flaw is that I'm not a quitter
So I try and try again but I'm not getting nearer

Track Four
Good Morning
3:14

Track: Good Morning
Genre: Pop-rock
Label: Liberation/Nomad Records
Recorded: Kings Cross, London
Produced by: Taylor Asbridge
Writen by: Rory Delaney
Personnel: Rory Delaney (Vocals), Chris Fielding (Guitar), Zak Collins (Bass guitar), George Edwards (Drums)

Good Morning is by far the best song on the album, with a punchy pop-rock vibe to it. The lyrics are sung quickly through a verse containing a hard hitting guitar riff. The verse had been recorded with two guitar tracks despite there only being one guitarist which adds to the density of the verse. The pre-chorus is just lead guitar with a catchy beat on the drums, making the song sound a lot more fun despite the context of the song. The song then goes into a powerful chorus with slightly slower lyrics but a lot more edgy rhythm with the instruments. The guitar strums power-chords until the line saying 'To set the record straight' where Chris then plays lead to the one line before going back into power-chords. The second verse, pre-chorus and chorus are played in the same style as the first ones until the breakdown, where the song slows down and Chris plays two soft notes repeatedly on his guitar as Rory sings a lot softer. The section where Rory sings 'We need to sort things out' builds up a little speed, with George hitting the snare drum faster with each line and Rory starting to sing louder before the song hits a stand still and Rory sings the pre-chorus without any instruments behind him except for a gentle cymbal being tapped lightly before the drums kick in and the last chorus is played normally again. The song then ends on a lasting gentle chord.

Rory's say

"Good Morning is definitely my favourite song on the album, and it's proven by it's number one. But yeah, it's a great song and the fans love it live so it had to go on this album. The song's about trying to make it through lover's tiffs. And that's basically it. Hope you can relate to it and it may help in some way."

Lyrics

We're separating the differences
Deciding who's at fault for each problem
We made the stories quite convincing
We'd fake loads of problems just to watch you solve them

I'd give or take a couple nasty shots to the head
I'd take them if it means you're not taking them instead
I won't listen to the people saying that I am the fool
For still holding you in my arms pretending it's cool

It's a good morning
It's a good morning
It's a good morning
To set the record straight
And I'll hold you in my arms and tell you it's okay
I got you and you got me, no matter what they say
It's a good morning
It's a good morning today

We're separating right from wrong
Filtering the results and carrying on
We'll still never learn, our hope is still one hundred percent gone
But for the purposes of this relationship, can we try to get along?

I'd give or take a couple nasty shots to the head
I'd take them if it means you're not taking them instead
I won't listen to the people saying that I am the fool
For still holding you in my arms pretending it's cool

It's a good morning
It's a good morning
It's a good morning
To set the record straight
And I'll hold you in my arms and tell you it's okay
I got you and you got me, no matter what they say

It's a good morning
It's a good morning today
It's a good morning, baby
It's a good morning

We need to sort things out
I don't know what you're talking about
We're constantly arguing again and again
But please listen to me because I don't want this to end

I'd give or take a couple nasty shots to the head
I'd take them if it means you're not taking them instead
I won't listen to the people saying that I am the fool
For still holding you in my arms pretending it's cool

It's a good morning
It's a good morning
It's a good morning
To set the record straight
And I'll hold you in my arms and tell you it's okay
I got you and you got me, no matter what they say
It's a good morning
It's a good morning today

Track Five
Ten Years Ago
2:31

Track: Ten Years Ago
Genre: Acoustic
Label: Liberation/Nomad Records
Recorded: Kings Cross, London
Produced by: Taylor Asbridge
Writen by: Rory Delaney
Personnel: Rory Delaney (Vocals), Chris Fielding (Guitar)

Ten Years Ago is the most heartfelt song on the album, expressing Rory's emotions about his grandfather's suicide with his voice sounding a lot calmer but his vocals display his sadness and sorrow about the situation. The song doesn't feature bass or drums as it is just Rory's vocals and an acoustic guitar. The song starts with a few chords before Rory's vocals join in, singing the first two verses softly. The song then goes into the first chorus, where Rory's vocals are more passionate and sound as if Rory could just burst into tears mid-song, although he doesn't. The song then slowly heads into the third verse, with Rory's vocals a little less calm but still soft and sung through his heart with Chris strumming the chords now instead of letting them ring once. Rory sounded a little shaky through the third verse as if he had cried before recording the third verse and the vocals were definitely not his best during that section, but go back into the second chorus where he sounds fine again, singing identically to the first until the extension in the chorus, where he sings louder and more using his throat and the chords are strummed harder bringing up a really dark vibe to his emotions, before slowing down again for the breakdown where the song sounds more powerful, but dark as Rory belts out his words with all he can until the last chorus approaches, with Rory singing acapella until the last word, with one last chord ending the song.

Rory's say

"Recording Ten Years Ago was emotional torture to me, I struggled to sing because I'd just burst into tears between each take and I fully agree that my singing wasn't the best in this song compared to the other songs on the album, but if I'm honest I feel like I did my grandfather proud and I hope whereever he is right now that he can hear this song and I hope he's happy now. I love you, grandpa Ian."

Lyrics

Ten years ago today, I let you slip away
Couldn't hold on much longer
And everyday's the same, I still scream your name
Because your name's all that I've got left of you

I tried to numb the pain
With alcohol but I'm still going insane
And nothing's been the same, just waiting for a change
Because I can't sit around and wait for your forever

Ten years from that day, the pain won't wash away
And I'm trying, trying to forget
Ten years from that day and I still hear your name
Ringing through my head

Ever since you walked away
From my life, it's all been clouds and rain
And I swear to God, I'd give up the money and the fame
Just to get thirty minutes in your arms again

Ten years from that day, the pain won't wash away
And I'm trying, trying to forget
Ten years from that day and I still hear your name
Ringing through my head
And I can't go on, holding on to hope that I won't remember a thing
Ten years from that day

Why did you go without one last goodbye?
No one to hold me or say good night, sleep tight
All I do when I think of you is cry out my eyes
But it's too late to change a thing, it ended ten years ago on this night

Ten years from that day, the pain won't wash away
And I'm trying, trying to forget
Ten years from that day and I still hear your name
Ringing through my head
And I can't go on, holding on to hope that I won't remember a thing
Ten years from that day
