It's a (typical) rainy day in vancouver, bc, and inside the tiny offices of Armoury Studios, Revolver is setting up equipment. There are no separate booths. There is no fancy equipment. The band is all in one room; ready to start recording. Tanner nervously sits at his drum kit, Josh tunes his guitar, Brent is on his phone, and Jay is rubbing his throat - it was pretty raw from a previous show.
Tanner: Guys, don't you think we could record this better with like...a producer?
Josh: I'm the producer.
Tanner: I meant like a professional.
Josh: I produced Stretch Muffler.
Tanner: That doesn't count.
Jay is pacing back and forth restlessly.
Jay: Let's fucking do it, dammit!
Tanner: *sighs* ....okay. Snow Song? From the top?
Brent and Josh nod. They begin to record and they start playing just as they would live.
SNOW SONG
Josh plugs his guitar in and it audibly cracks and hums, he stands close to the amplifier and the reverb reaches a fever pitch. After a couple seconds he starts in on a complicated, rolling guitar riff that's accompanied by pounding bass and heavy drums. Jay dives into his vocals, screaming;
Over mountains I feel safe,
sacred were those summers.
And these memories I place in my heart for shelter.
And I modify, just to smell the ocean.
And I underline, visualizing motion.
And then the chorus; with clean vocals by Jay backed by heavy chords from Josh
And I guess I miss my home,
I could not stay.
I'll return, it's alright, I'm ok.
And then back to the main riff and verse passage
Reoccurred daydream, tie up stern first.
And these gifts I've learned, never leave me.
And I redesign, family and growing.
And I realign, forgetting nothing.
Back to the clean vocals of the chorus
And I guess I miss my home,
I could not stay.
I'll return, it's alright, I'm ok.
Maybe in a few years it'll come back to you,
reflection becoming your virtue.
And then to the bridge, clean guitar juxtaposed against heavy drums and bass for the first two lines, followed by heavy guitars with screamed vocals for the last two
So sort me out, lay me away.
Over these mountains I feel safe.
And bless the sound, return the day.
Over these mountains I feel safe.
A second bridge where the first two lines of the chorus are sang over simple notes on a guitar, before it returns to the chorus instrumentation for the last line
And I guess I miss my home,
I could not stay.
I'll return, it's alright, I'm ok.
Maybe in a few years it'll come back to you,
reflection becoming your virtue.
So sort me out, lay me away.
Over these mountains I feel safe.
The outro features a repeated, simple heavy riff that derives from the main riff of the song.
...
Sweat dripping off their bodies, Josh unplugs his guitar and the crack-hiss is audible again, before the recording stops.
Tanner:....what next?
Jay pants, out of breath.
Jay: Break for refreshments?
