Well, in that case Pathfinder is free online. So we can do that perhaps? It's a D&D System, so if everyone agrees we can go with that and build characters. |

Is it "free" or is it free? Because as far as I can see the rulebook is on sale as PDF for $9.99. Which is what you'd pay for a PDF of Vampire: The Requiem core rulebook. |

Ahh. Yes. Well, there you go guys. A free ruleset. More fantasy & less gritty horror but free But I'm not DMing it. I had an idea for a Hunter game which won't be able to fit into the D&D archetypes Edited by user 23 June 2012 10:15:52(UTC)

I won't say in the off-chance I ever get to play it with you guys But y'know, a gang of friends noticing things that go bump in the night, what is it? Well, that's how it starts. Then it gets interesting from there. |

It does sound like a good set-up, but as it seems I may be DMing this, if no-one else volunteers, I will.
Things that will NEED to happen before I cement myself in as DM: -4 players (or 3 really? I just want 3 confirmed people. Don't worry about times as this will be PBP if I DM) -I roll the die when you wish for it to be done. Just to make sure every encounter is fair, as I am the one neutral party (even though I kinda do want to make the game hard, if people think I roll unfairly, I'll ask someone to come in and roll for all of us).
That's about it, and we're running Pathfinder. It has guns, so yeah. I think you should congregate amongst yourselves so you have a balanced party. 3 tanks rushing into battle without a mage is how people get rolled over, even by a beginner DM. |

Are you going to try using something like Maptools? Because one of the reasons we ended up not trying that D&D4E free scenario was that these games all use some sort of grid to access. And I couldn't get my head around making the free programs work. |

Yeah, it is. I think the best idea if we all want to do RP is to create a group and try out a MUD. |

I think I'll probably end up forcing myself to work out how to use something like Maptools, or maybe Roll20. Because fuck it. Any maps I create will look like ass because I have absolutely no graphical aptitude, but that's a relatively minor flaw as far as I'm concerned. I mean the game is meant to be about imagination after all! |

I still say the MUD idea is our best chance. MapTools looks totally user un-friendly. |

I think I've totally sussed Roll20. Already. It just...so many times more user-friendly than MapTools.
But OK, I haven't looked at MUDs since...god, since I first got online in 98 or 99. So I honestly remember nothing about them. Fill me in DA |

MapTools = 0 on the UserFriendly scale.
MUDs are about the same, they are written out in the same manner as say ZORK but it's the character base and mods that make the game. I don't know of any good Medieval ones (well I do, Aardwolf and so on but I've never played them) but I did frequent a WoD one for a few months and I was a very avid follower of Atonement RPI for a while too. |

DA, if you are about you should have a gander at this, as it's the utility I'm using to try put together the Keep on the Shadowfell Quickstart campaign. Just to see that it's possible for my own curiosity primarily. I mean I've only assembled the first area, but it's taken very little time. 30 minutes maybe & a lot of that was just generally faffing about working out what I was up to.
But it's incredibly easy to just...use. |

It looks pretty good actually. EDIT: Actually Roll20 has a system to find ongoing games, we could use that and join one. Edited by user 19 September 2012 06:41:43(UTC)
