SEE YOU ON THE OTHER SIDE – New Single



It was quite a year for Julia Volkova, she had her debut album as a soloist released and it manage to sell over 4 million copies so far, she had a number one hit and a couple of top 5 radio hits too, she started a co-headline tour with Cristina Lake which is in a break ready to start the second leg and she’s finally ready to move on to another project very soon.

This single is the bonus track of the album and it was originally written for ElectroDeath’s album ‘The Sun Will Rise’, for Julia it’s her goodbye track in response to her departure from the band, but she even says that there’s no bad feelings at all and that she’s happy with her career and happy with ElectroDeath’s new era too.

The single will be available digitally this Sunday and it will also be available as airplay to be requested world widely. The song is presented on Julia’s set list of her ‘Chasing Excuses Tour’ and has been well received by fans and critics as a reminiscent piece of her days with electronic music.

A music video is planned to be released by the end of this month, so stay tuned for more information about it.


Song Description: This track uses sultry backing vocals and smooth ambient melodies, it also has an electronic percussion on it, it has influences of bands such as Portishead and Depache Mode, two bands that had been influenced Julia’s work on music since she was a member of ElectroDeath.

There’s a piano riff on the track which is mixed with a bunch of other creepy electronic sounds, also Julia uses synthesizers in the song making it sound even more creepy and strange than any other track on the album. Julia’s vocals are breathy and soft even in the high notes, she’s also accompanied by lots of backing vocals which gives the song a more hopeful intonation at some time compared to the immensely depressive melody of it.

Whispers can be heard throughout the whole track and in the bridge of the song, Julia raises her voice to a falsetto note, and in this part we can hear an electric guitar riff following her voice, but then the song comes back to the original melody and finally Julia finishes it whispering the last phrase.

Lyrically the song is about death, and how people deal when they realize that someone beloved is dying, rumors that this track is about Magie Lena’s father and it was written by Magie and Julia while they were making ElectroDeath’s album ‘The Sun Will Rise’ it didn’t make the final cut of the album due to the dark melody of it and people even say that this was one of the reasons Julia quit the band at the time.

Julia’s Comments: This was the last song I wrote for ElectroDeath, when we were producing ‘The Sun Will Rise’. I wrote this song, I knew this would be a dark song to put in that album which was all about ‘good vibrations’, so I had to accept that they wouldn’t put it on the final cut of the album, I was really upset because I wrote this song specially for Magie, to show how much I loved her as a sister, but unfortunately even she couldn’t do anything to put this song in the album. Ok this was not the reason I quit ElectroDeath but it shows how much my style of music was changing from what ElectroDeath was cling to do.

So now this song has a totally different meaning for me, it is about my departure from ElectroDeath and the way I feel about that situation today, I’ll just hope they’ll be watching me and caring about me, despite I’m not in the band anymore I still love Lilly and Magie and they know that, but I’m afraid that I’ll only be with ElectroDeath on the other side. ElectroDeath belongs to my memories right now and this song shows that and I really think it’s a perfect way to finish the cycle of my debut album, saying that I’m ready to move on to another chapter of my life!

Julia is walking in a large dried field made of dandelions, she seems happy walking among all these flowers with winds touching her face and waving her hair. Despite all the sadness in the song, the video starts very soft and clean and even bright,.

Suddenly Julia stops for a second as she notice that there’s a house in the horizon, she knows what is that house and even who leaves there, she slightly smile showing that she feels happy in the place she is and that she can just keep walking without worries because whatever is inside that house is trapped there.

After the chorus the scene changes to another Julia, but this time is that that happy one who from the beginning of the video, this one is very sad and looks like she is inside that house that the happy Julia was looking moments ago, she’s facing a picture of an ocean on the wall the same time she sings the second strophe of the song.

When the song reaches the second chorus, water begins to be dropped by that picture instantly it comes with strength and very quickly it drowns the whole place.

After the second chorus the house is already underwater and Julia is swimming around the rooms of it, she doesn’t need to breathe while she swims and she even keeps singing the song’s lines, at some point she gets closer to the window, where she can see far away the other Julia, the one from the beginning of the video. That Julia is slightly smiling for this drowned Julia, they seem to comprehend each other but they’re in two different situations, one of them is happy and the other is sad, one of them is a big dandelion bright field the other one is trapped in a dark house underwater.

The Last chorus of the song begins and both versions of Julia go back to their natural habitat, the one drowned goes back to a bedroom, the other one in the fields goes walking around as she was in the beginning of the video.

The video ends with a close up on the happy Julia’s face as she keeps looking to the horizon.



Julia Comments:

It’s a poetic video, two extremes, two different visions of what the ‘other side’ could represent in our lives, we wanted to do something that would only talk about death, because I feel like everyone when they listened to this song they already linked the ‘death’ subject to those lyrics, so in the video I wanted to show people that ‘the other side’ could be the opposite situation that you are right now. There’s me walking in the field, happy, in heaven and then there’s me drowned in a dark house underwater but not running away, I’m seeing happiness outside my window but I keep being in that sadness situation, and I want people to ask themselves why do we need to be sad if we want to be happy? Because there isn’t happiness without sadness, it’s a natural way of thing, just like death and life or anything that can be thinking as the ‘other side’. This is the last video for my debut album, after it I’m going to finish my tour and further work in a second album. I never had worked with Benny before but he’s a visionary, when I told him what I wanted to represent with this video he came up with the idea of drowning me in this house, and it looked so beautiful and sophisticated, I loved it.

I knew Julia because of her breakout on ElectroDeath, I actually knew that she was not with the band anymore, but I didn’t have time to listen to her solo music, till she called me, because she saw a video I directed for another artists, and she asked me if I would like to listen a song of her debut album and then she introduced me ‘See you on the other side’ I felt in love. It’s so different from what we have in the mainstream right now and also when she explained what she wanted to represent with the video I even loved it more. I just hope her fans will enjoy this video as much as Julia and I enjoyed it.
