Song Description
“Flying Solo” is a laid back, “chilled”, mid-tempo R&B track. The track contains soul elements as well, but seems very different from the type of R&B/Soul that O’Bryan explored with his debut album. “Flying Solo” seems more fresh, more new, more sexual (if he could get anymore) than anything O’Bryan’s ever done. The track is very raw from beginning to end. The song focuses on O’Bryan and his current love situation. He begins the track talking about him “making love to people he knows doesn’t love him” and “people he doesn’t love back”. He makes love to them just to cope with losing the love of his life, and having that person no longer in his life, and no longer desiring to be a part of his life.
Growing frustrated with his issues with love, and what he’s doing wrong in his life, O’Bryan gathers up the courage to say “No more” and decides to “Fly Solo”. He realizes that he could no longer try and cope with losing the person he loved by replacing them with other people. He realizes how redundant his behavior has become. However, MOST importantly, O’Bryan realizes that he cannot go on wishing for his love lost to come back, and he wants to forget about that chapter in his life, and is now ready to move on.
What becomes a major debate in the song is what does O’Bryan mean by, “Flying Solo”. He could simply be talking about sex. Being that he describes himself as becoming a sexually promiscuous guy after losing the one he’s loved. And to stop he’d prefer to handle his business himself. Without trying to come up with a fancy term, He could just be referring to “masturbation”. Or he could actually take a more subtle mysterious approach and be talking about, realizing what’s becoming of him, and not letting it get the best of him. And actually begin to love himself more and not sleep with people who he doesn’t care about, or use others to replace his ex. Or he could possibly mean both. It seems like many will feel that way, because, he is specific in the track to refer to masturbation, but mysterious enough to be referring to taking control of his life. And that is the most important and satisfying thing about the track, is that, O’Bryan delivers in a way that has you understanding what he’s feeling, but wondering about what he meant, and who he is talking about?

“Flying Solo is simply the greatest song I’ve written in my career thus far. It is the most emotional I’ve written also. And it wasn’t an easy thing to write. This song was the best way for me to tell my fans what I’ve been doing for these two years. A lot of them gonna be like, “damn”, “nigga, you was only fucking”. But nah, that’s not the case. I been on a roller-coaster, that I feel is coming to an end. But it’s an good end. I am happy it’s coming to an end. Basically this song is just an take on how HARD it was for me to realize that sometimes when you fuck up in relationships that person may not want you back or ever wanna see you again. It took me a long time to realize that, and once I did that’s when things started to clear up. And I began to understand things better. I began to understand why it’s important to not waste your time or put ALL of your energy into one person. So I just decided to put the pen to paper and write. Write all that I was feeling, and all that felt. And this song is my signature in a way. It’s like me signing off saying, I’m free. I’m flying solo.
It also is just very fresh. It still contains soul but I channeled it in a different way this time around. With my first album, I feel like it was soulful, but because I channeled the soul through my voice. I feel that with this record, I channeled it not only with my voice but lyrically as well. You just feel the lyrics. As you do with many of the new material, I’ve written and recorded. So here’s to a new start. Thanks for having me back. And enjoy.”
