M.James, Live at Irving Plaza - Friday, 22nd of September

UserPostedImage

The room is warm, too warm. M.James is stood in the bathroom back stage. The tap is running quickly, the occasional splash of water hits his tan coloured chinos, leaving the odd dark mark here and there. He slowly places his hands under the cold water, letting the water flow over them and down the drain hole. He cups his hands and then gently splashes it onto his face, wincing as the cold water quickly runs down his face and drips off his nose and chin. He takes in a long breath and then sighs. He pulls a few paper towels from the dispenser and gently dabs his face dry and ruffles his hair as he stares at himself studying his features. He would probably be a reasonably attractive guy if he wasn't so thin...

A knock on the door brings him back to reality. A broad New York accent screeches something which seems incomprehensible to M.James, he quickly unlocks the door and faces up to the maker of the noise. A short, stumpy woman wearing a pair of dazzling red glasses is glaring at him. "You gonna hurry up then?" she screeches at him, "you're on in like 2 minutes!" He nods at her and pushes through the slight crowd that has formed since he had entered the bathroom so that he could get over to his guitar. He picks it up and slowly runs his fingers down the length of it and pulls the strap over his head. He lets it hang freely so that he can tighten the strap slightly. He can feel one singular droplet of sweat rolling down his forehead, it runs down between his nose and eye and onto his lip. He subconsciously licks his lips and winces as the salty bead of sweat is swept into his mouth.

The short, stumpy lady with the dazzling red glasses is currently on stage; she is talking about how amazing the singers have been tonight and continues babbling for what seems like a lifetime. M.James is stood on the side staring at her, he can feel his nerves starting to climb. The only thought running through his head right now is how bad an idea this is, how had he managed to talk himself into this?!

"and now! A big guy who hasn't been here before! Give a warm welcome to our Irving Place debutante - M.JAMES!" the small crowd makes a noise as he shuffles onto the stage. There are probably 50 people here, not a large venue by any means, but that is 50 more people in the venue than he wants at this point! He walks over to the stool that has just been placed in the middle of the stage and he stares out into the small crowd. They are restless. He goes to speak but his voice cracks. A slight murmur ripples through the crowd - they are tiring of him already.

He tries again, taking a deep breath to settle his nerves. "Hey there." His accent shocks many of the New Yorkers stood expecting a fellow american. "I'm M.James. And i'm from England." There is a cheer from one person at the back of the room. He smiles. He can feel himself relaxing again slightly. "I suppose i should get started at some point then shouldn't i? Got three songs for you today. You all ready?"

And with that, he begins.

Chasing Cars - Snow Patrol Cover

He clears his throat again and starts to pick at the two strings required for the repetitive start to the world famous song, "Well to start you guys off today, i'm gonna try to play Snow Patrol's Chasing Cars." There is a slight applaud from the audience. He continues to pick at the strings as he plucks up the courage to start singing.

"We'll do it all,
Everything,
On our own"

His voice is soft and gentle, inviting the audience in with the slight raspy edge to it. He plays the guitar perfectly, the song sounding as if it was being played by the band themselves. As he continues through, the audience join in on the chorus from time to time, a slight choir effect being created.

"If I lay here,
If I just lay here,
Would you lie with me,
And just forget the world?"

M.James closes his eyes as he gets lost in the song, the lyrics mean a lot to him, the song helped him through a lot of tough times when... Before. He feels his eyes glisten and blinks it out. He catches the eye of a girl in the third row, she is smiling at him. It's obviously going well. They audience can here the sincerity in his voice, they understand.

"Those three words
Are said too much
They're not enough"

The song starts to pick up more, and he feels himself gently lift away from the chair. The strumming is now starting to get slightly faster and a little louder. M.James starts to sing a little louder, and the raspiness of his voice becomes more apparent. He strums louder, the song has hit it's peak; and M.James is standing over the microphone, bent down so that it catches his voice.

"If I lay here
If I just lay here
Would you lie with me
And just forget the world?"

And as he sings the last chorus, he slows the music down and is back to just plucking at two strings. He almost whispers the last line as the crowd start to cheer and applaud him. He smiles to himself, maybe this wasn't such a mistake...

How to Save a Life - The Fray Cover

M.James sits back down and takes a sip of water from a bottle that has just been brought onto the stage for him. He nods in thanks to the guy who just ran it on for him. He gently places it back onto the floor and then scours the audience for a familiar face. He doesn't have any luck, so decides it's time to continue with his set. "Next up, is another personal favourite of mine. It's a really meaningful song, and i hope that i portray this well. The Fray's How To Save a Life!"

He gently plays what sounds like the piano introduction on the guitar, gently strumming and plucking in a way to make the song fit properly. It is gentle and leads perfectly into the soft rasp that M.James uses to start the song off.

"Step one you say we need to talk
He walks you say sit down it's just a talk
He smiles politely back at you
You stare politely right on through"

Again he can feel himself starting to lift off the seat but he manages to control himself as he starts to pick up the pace of the song, making his voice louder and stronger towards the end of the first verse. The chorus approaches and the strumming gets louder. He stands up and belts out the chorus, lips gently caressing the microphone.

"Where did I go wrong, I lost a friend
Somewhere along in the bitterness
And I would have stayed up with you all night
Had I known how to save a life"

M.James drops down onto the stool again as the song slows back down and he gently whispers the start of the next verse. The people in the audience who know the song are acting as a chorus again, giving him the backing that they would give a star who was doing a world tour. He powers through the end of the verse and straight into the chorus again, with the third verse being much the same as the first and second.

"As he begins to raise his voice
You lower yours and grant him one last choice
Drive until you lose the road
Or break with the ones you've followed
He will do one of two things
He will admit to everything
Or he'll say he's just not the same
And you begin to wonder why you came"

The audience is swaying to the music as M.James lands back on the stool again, the song has slowed down again. He plucks and strums the bridge twice over to lengthen the tension before he goes back in for the final chorus. The audience sing along with him and feels his mouth dry up slightly and his eyes glisten again. He knows what is coming after this song.

"How to save a life..."

Her Song - Original Track

M.James takes another sip of the drink. He is about to play one of his own songs in front of the audience for the first time. This is major. "Right," his voice cracks slightly, "this song is very personal to me. It is my own song, and it means a lot. Her Song"

He grasps the microphone and rasps the first line of the song. He can feel his throat tightening. The verse progresses and his hand goes back to the guitar. He starts to play a quiet, mourningful tune. His voice is almost inaudible, urging the listeners to listen harder. He links eyes with the girl in the third row again, her eyes are shining, she can obviously feel the connection between him and the song.

"Finger tips, slowly slide down the window,
Leave a trail, that only your eyes will follow,
Fingerprints, leave a story where they go,
In the past, are my demons that you’ll never know,
Never know…"

As the song progresses, the strumming and picking gets louder, with his voice doing the same so as not to be drowned out. The chorus comes and goes, and the audience starts to sway to it. He looks out and makes eye contact with a few different people around the room, it helps keep him grounded - knowing that they are hearing and sharing his pain.

"Photographs, leave a memory on our souls,
Memories, are things that I’ll never let go,
You’re the one, that I share so much of my life with,
But that’s all in the past, and now we’ll never grow,
Never grow…"

The song progresses further and the chords become more complex and blend with M.James' voice more, the music is picking up pace while his voice stays at the same pace. This signifies the way the world seems to speed up when you lose someone close. The song approaches the final chorus and he clambers to his feet and thrashes at his guitar. The audience are really getting into the song as his raspy voice caresses their ears.

"The starlight…
I watch the rain fall…
Oh!!
The starlight creeps through my window,
I watch the rain fall on the white snow,
If only, if only I did know,
Where you were in that dark sky,
Oh why, oh why, oh why,
I miss that beautiful look in your eye,
I miss the way your eyes glitter when you cry,
I love everything about you,
The pain is so unreal, how I miss you,
You took yourself,
Because you couldn't deal with what I had done,
I’ve made some mistakes,
My angels are gone,
And so is her song."

The final words echo as he plays a soft plucked tune to end the show to a major round of applause. "Thank you." and then he leaves the stage.
