I have noticed recently that almost every person on this boards find a lot of 'mainstream' bands boring or dull, for instance Oasis or Kasabian.
So basically, my question is, what bands arent boring? What are your favorite exciting, different bands. Just write a list or whatever. Basically, im asking what bands you'd say are 'innovative'.

Here's some bands that energise me in some kind of inappropriate-for-a-gentleman-such-as-myself fashion:

Old Man Gloom
The Mars Volta
Akron/Family
Big Business
Oxbow
The Locust
Ruins
Torche

Not necessarily anything to do with being innovative necessarily, they just do things that give me a buzz. Rich, flavoursome, full of unique character.

As a side note, I only picked a handful of "exciting" bands, there's a lot of bands I listen to which I certainly wouldn't classify as exciting.

Hey, Oasis are legends! Yeah, they are mainstream. So what? They just happen to be a great band that were lucky to go mainstream. They aren't like the faggoy Jonas Brothers just for being known because Disney likes their hair.

Anway, here are some of my favourite bands:

The Killers
The Strokes
Blur
Oasis
The Verve
Radiohead
3Oh!3 (shut up!)
Linkin Park
Green Day

Actually Disney likes them for the audience their music is aimed at.

Yeah, what you think they actually write the songs? They just found some people that they thought the little girls would like, write them songs, and bam! They go rich.

Actually, they do for the majority.

See: http://en.wikipedia.org/...Bit_Longer#Track_listing

You can't lie about the credits and copyright to someone's art form. Therefore, the source is reliable as such.

If they can write pop, they will be pop.

(FYI, by no means do I like the Jonas Brothers nor am a fan, but I know for a fact they are songwriters. No matter how painful.)

Wrong. Did you think to look at their other albums? Their single SOS, one of their most successful, was written solely by Nick.

From the album I linked, Lovebug and Burnin' Up are written by them solely. And are both singles? Dunno what you're looking at.

An the rest are co-writes. At no point have they sung a song written by someone else unless it were a cover.

Anyway, still, I don't like them. I still think they are overrated, since their entire fanbase is teenage girls and they think they are big hotshot rockers, but really they are teenn pop stars, which in my opinion is a fate worse than hell.

Well like them or not, I still illustrated my point that throwing around the fact that artists don't write their own songs makes you look silly if you don't do your research on it first.

actually, it wouldn't surprise me that they write their own songs. it's pretty obvious if you take a look at their lyrics.

i don't know what you mean with "exciting", but as "innovative" i would say, these days:

animal collective
the mars volta
mùm
sigur rós
radiohead
the knife
sonic youth
of montreal
tricky
björk
klaxons
the white stripes
doris (argentinian band)
suárez (argentinian band)

i guess the list could go on, but those are the ones that came into my head when i thought of "innovative" or "original". i'd like to mention also laetitia sadier, from stereolab, as one of the most talented and amazing musicians of the last 20 or 25 years.

James
All Time Low
.... are the top two, of course.

I would also recommend (alphabetically) -
Black 47
Deep Blue Something
From First To Last
Great Big Sea
Jack's Mannequin
Jack Off Jill
Jeffree Star
Jill Sobule
Kids In Glass Houses
Kittie
Maldita
Morti
Seether
Silverchair
Sirens And Sounds
Something Corporate
Tea
Tea & Biscuits
The Cure
You Me At Six

I tried to take out the "mainstream" ones, and I don't know what you'd call "exciting" on there - just a few (well, more than a few!) Bikki recommendations. (:

Conor Oberst is easily my favourite artist. It shows you don't have to be a good singer to be an excellent and renowned musician and songwriter.

Amanda Palmer is a genius, though obvious, her voice and style is a little less...commercially tailored...so you get what's there with her. It's an acquired taste for some I suppose, but I love everything the woman does!
