PIXIE: EXCLUSIVE INTERVIEW

"In a World That Encourages People To Be Original, Everyone Wants To Believe That No One Can Be."

UserPostedImage
November 6th, 2012

What would you do if you were given an extraordinary gift to turn lyrics into real life? This is the case for Finland born Pixie Love, who recently burst onto the scene, swiftly gracing us with her beautiful presence. A lot of new artists are coming and going but she has seemed to made an impact that is clear she's here to stay. I caught up with Pixie today and we talked about her upbringing, her style, her inspirations and her new single Walk Alone. It was quite clear that I wasn't dealing with just any artist but I was sitting in front of someone who could potentially become the next big act. Sometimes it's hard to distinguish one act from another but Pixie stands in a lane of her own. She may favor or even hint at some of the legends in music but she's nothing close to being unoriginal. She's got style and imagination, this is Pixie. - Katharine K.

Katharine: Thank you for joining me today Pixie! It's get to be able to sit down and chat with you.

Pixie: Thank you for having me love, it's an absolute honor!

Katharine: First of all, let me say that you have a very impeccable sense of fashion! I mean the clothes you are always wearing seem so simple yet nothing like you'd see on the streets today. Is that inspired by your music?

Pixie: My clothing has a mind of its own! It tells me what I'm wearing so I go with it. I love mixing and matching so it's an enjoyable experience. My mother used to try to dress me when I was little and I'd change into something else, she'd hate that. (Laughs) But I don't like being dressed up unless I'm doing it myself or at least have a say in it. In a way, it helps me to be more creative sometimes.

Katharine: So you're not a newbie to the music industry at all. In fact, you debuted back in 2009 in your home country of Finland. What's the biggest difference between yourself then and now?

Pixie: Well first of, I'm a lot more confident and secure with my label, for obvious reasons, and America has a much more widespread fan base for music so there's a chance for me to succeed. In Finland, almost everyone had the same sound and it was mostly in Finnish so it was kind like how Pop music used to be, generic but now it's formed into some of the most interesting sounds people have ever heard of. A lot of people leave their countries to better themselves and they believe, like I do, that I'll do that here. Back then in 2009, I was limited because of the small demand of music in Finland. There's not many artists that come from there and actually are successful, so it was almost easy but here? Now it's a real competition! I'm going up against the best of the best so I'm always bringing my A game. I won't give any artist a chance to take what I work for. (Smirks)

Katharine: You truly sound motivated! You also seem like you had your mind made up about singing from a young age. What was it that actually captured your attention about music? Why did you decide to become an artist?

Pixie: Oddly enough, it was when my mother would read me bedtime stories at night. I knew that I wanted to be a story teller and I wanted to use my words to paint a picture. I don't claim to have the best voice but I've always had an imagination that was big enough to make up stories that sound true. After I went to my ballroom dancing classes and my teacher told me I had a beautiful voice, I gained more confidence and I wanted to sing. I would sit in my room for hours and hours just listening to different types of music and wondering why people talked about the things they did and how I could become a story teller like them. It was always my destiny to do this, nothing else in life matters to me but music.

Katharine: I noticed on your last album, Love Is Real, that you wrote every song on there, alone. Why is that?

Pixie: I just think it's more meaningful to write your own lyrics instead of having someone do all the work for you. It's true, some of the greatest songs were written by other people and they breathed life into the song but I personally take pride in my lyrics. I'm a bit selfish. I like to get all the credit if that song does well. It's like 'Yes, I wrote that all by myself, isn't it a wonderful song?' Sometimes I think people just want someone to write a song for them and that it doesn't matter as long as you have a song. I just like taking pride in everything I do. I don't mind sharing the spotlight as well!

Katharine: Your debut single for the U.S, Walk Alone, it debuted #1 on the digital charts and became one of the fastest watched videos on Vevo. Did you expect for the single to do so well?

UserPostedImage

Pixie: To be honest, no. (Laughs) I thought everyone would be like 'Who is this Finnish bitch? Where the fuck did she come from and what the hell is she singing about?' So I was quite surprised but thankful. I know it's not always easy to adapt to new sounds so I'm glad people accepted me. I remember when I first came here and I did some shows. I could tell the crowd had never heard someone like me before but the response was so overwhelming! They loved it and I loved them so much. I had people coming up to me and saying that I was fresh and I gave them hope in music again, I had never thought about myself in that way. I just wanted to do what I wanted and be myself. My music is the real me, nothing changed or censored. They respect that and I respect them.

Katharine: There's a lot of what seems to be negativity going on in the industry, and a few people say that you are trying to copy another singer, How do you deal with it?

Pixie: In a world that encourages people to be original, everyone wants to believe that no one can be. I don't take it to heart at all. I know who I am so it doesn't matter. I'm nothing like anyone else and in time people will see that. I try not to respond to negativity at all. I believe in helping others and I'm not trying to impress anyone. If that's your main purpose in music then you shouldn't be in music. I'm the way I am because God sprinkled some fairy dust onto his clay model and I came out. I don't have time to be involved in petty arguments with people who don't have anything better to do. I have fairies that need me. In the end, I sleep like a baby every night.

Katharine: Even though you don't talk about your personal life that much, what was it like growing up as Pixie?

Pixie: I grew up in Helsinki with my parents. We were poor so I had to be able to use what I had and make the best of it but we were happy. I used to draw and write poems all the time. My mother wanted to send me to dance school so that's when I got into ballroom dancing. I fell in love with it but my mom couldn't afford to pay for it anymore so I had to stop. My parents divorced and I felt alone and that I had to choose sometimes. I dreamed about them getting back together and I wrote stories about us being a happy family again. I was home schooled because I didn't really interact well with other kids. They just didn't seem to share the same thoughts and visions that I had. It wasn't until I traveled that I met people who were similar to me.

When I moved to the U.S, I started to write more and I got more inspiration. Most of my songs were about my home life and what it was like growing up in Finland but now I have more of a wide variety. I write about different things that people probably wouldn't expect to hear. At first, I wanted to become a motivational speaker. I thought I could tell stories then but artists have more power because they persuade and influence people every day. I want to be that voice for the voiceless. I want to represent the people that get judged and looked down upon because of their looks or their beliefs. I want to inspire and be amazing.

Katharine: You have stated some of your influences for your music and fashion are people like Gwen Stefani, P!nk, Janis Joplin, Phil Collins and Lauryn Hill. What do each of them to you bring to the table as far as that influence?

Pixie: Oh I adored all of them so much Katharine! Well, Gwen is simple; I love her style of course and she has always been different. She has never sounded like any other artist and no one has ever sounded like her as much as they tried. She is a wonderful lady who I think is a great role model. She taught me how to embrace my craziness and not care about others. P!nk taught me how to not give a damn about the critics and naysayers. She's a strong, beautiful woman and she too is different. She has such a unique voice that can't be copied, she has her own style, she is bold, she made me gain confidence in myself as an artist and a woman. Janis Joplin taught me to be free. In the studio, I'm never tense, I just meditate and let the creativeness flow from my mind to my mouth.

UserPostedImage

Phil Collins has that beautiful nature in his songs and so do I in some of them. He taught me to respect music and to not just try to make sound but to make music. He taught me to tell a story and be emotional and not an industry robot. Lauryn Hill is my inner urban side. She and the other ladies I mentioned all have that kind of soulfulness in their spirit that just allows you to really feel what they are singing so I want to be like that. They have all contributed to music and people will always remember them so I want to be like that. I want to remembered for my music and not just my attitude.

Katharine: You also have a love for Japan and their fashion. Why is that?

Pixie: The way they do everything is so far ahead of our time. Their fashion is bold and beautiful. They are so adorable and sweet over there too. Japan is one of my favorite places to go because I always feel welcomed. They are such a beautiful country just like my home Finland. I think they just scream attraction, love. No one can deny how advanced they are in almost everything.

Katharine: Now let's talk about the situation with Liberation/Nomad Records? Why did they reject you?

Pixie: I never asked and I don't really care to know why. I moved on to better things and I'm happy at my label now. Titanic Records really made me feel at home. The Teen Titans are very sweet and funny so I enjoyed the atmosphere there. I'm glad I got rejected. I feel like they wouldn't have been what I needed. Shit happens so you gotta just go with it.

Katharine: It's safe to say that they missed out on a budding star in the making! So everyone wants to know, when is the new single? When can we expect a new album and what can we expect from Pixie?

UserPostedImage

Pixie: Aww, I know my fairies want to know that answer. My next single will be out towards the end of the month. I won't give too much away but it'll be better than the last single. The video will be released the same day and I think everyone will enjoy that. My album won't be out quite yet but trust me when it does, you will not be disappointed. There's a lot of different sounds mixed into the album. There's Pop, Dance, Electronic, Industrial, which is one of my favorite genres, Rock, Trance, it's going to be crazy sounding. Nothing will be undone and you'll see all the work that went into my career. You can expect a lot of amazing things from Pixie! I've already been in talks about different projects and I'll be going on a tour next year. Pixie is here to stay and nothing or no one will make me leave.

Katharine: We definitely can't wait to see and hear more from you! Thanks for joining me on this Exclusive Yahoo! Music interview. I'm Katharine K. and that's all for now. Tune in after this for the showing of Pixie's video, Walk Alone.
