It's been over a year since GirlSpice released their last studio album, those girls really like keeping us waiting for new music, don't they? Since then, Nadia went back to being a solo artist and became more successful than ever, Chantal became pregnant, Kimberly's doing nothing but partying most likely (and also getting a writing credit on this!), and now Sophia's taking a shot at a solo career... even if it only lasts for one single. But this isn't the first time we've heard music from Sophia since the last GS record, she also released "Are You Ready?", a hit single in collaboration with Suzie.
It's taken a year and three months to get a solo single out of Sophia, but she's finally gotten round to it after a spot on Big Brother, with a song titled "Locked Up". It's not the most likely title to say the least from Sophia, considering she's always been known as the innocent and brainless one from GirlSpice, but with a raunchy spread coming out for Playboy, Sophia could be wanting to shed her previous good girl image.
"Locked Up" is probably what you'd expect from Sophia if you were to imagine a solo track from her, it's fun, careless and most importantly, a song that finds a great middle line between dance and pop. But it's not all great, in fact it's somewhat generic, uninspired, and we're not sure if that chorus is insanely catchy or just terribly repetitive. That's not to say it's entirely predictable though, Sophia funnily enough sings about dancing in her "favourite thong", a line that might not sound too out of place on her best friend's music, but we guess it adds some sort of personality to the track, but it's one of those "so bad it's good" moments rather than a true saving grace.
Overall, this isn't a bad debut for Sophia, but it's not exactly great either. It's got a chance of doing well in the clubs, but does Sophia have enough star potential to get radio airplay? And more importantly, will the general public warm to her in the same way that they have with band mate Nadia Berry?
