I'm writing this journal entry after letting quite a few go. It's been a big blur really. Especially the first few dates through the home state. Then we headed deeper south and that was when I realized that Grampa Jack was gone more than ever. Fell into a bit of a funk and stopped talking, socializing, writing, and kind of going through the motions for most of the shows there for a while. Mr. Hess was surprisingly sympathetic and I think a some pure Kentucky Bourbon really did the trick with the puff of the stronger stuff that could put down a horse. Everything's starting to pull together and I'm starting to enjoy myself more. Carolina's been nice to me and I enjoy going further south as this tour progresses. You can forget east coast or west coast type tours. I prefer heading down south and tearing it up down there instead. Most normal people don't quite understand. Unless they were raised in it I guess. Been rocking out the bars and concert halls like hell these past few days. Feels good to be on the road again. Hopefully we'll be hearing from Mr. Hess and his clan here soon.

Set List:

Acoustic Session

32-20 Blues
It Hurts Me Too
C.C. Rider
Mojo Hand
Boogie Chillen
Death Letter Blues
Catfish Blues
Smokestack Lightning
Poor Black Maddie
Frankie and Johnny

She Said/Chicken Walk (w/ Erich Hess)
Bo Diddely (w/ Erich Hess)
Before You Accuse Me
Hobo Blues
Preachin' Blues
Crow Jane
Hard Time Killin' Floor Blues
Stack O'lee
Crossroads Blues

Electric Session

Ink, Blood, and Whiskey
Podunk Stomp
Devil's Daughter (Hank III Cover w/ Erich Hess)
Electric Worry Blues
The Gunfighter
Gangster of Love
Burn A Page
Tuesday's Gone (After someone yelled for Freebird)
High Water (Song For Charlie Patton)
Die With My Boots On
Raise Your Glass
Electric Lemonade Jam
Highway 61 Revisited
West Virginia Wing
Statesboro Blues
Tribute To Muddy
Ain't Much Left of Me

Encore Set:

i love touring with johnny.he is one of those inspiring cats who makes me forget about erich the madman, and remember erich the musician.seriously,if you see me playing with johnny on the bill, that is me at my limit. the tour has been more somber in tone than before. we all know why we are here, and we all can feel the mountain sized hole left by jack. i've tried to be there for johnny as well as i can be. i dont have that gift of speech to make people feel better when they are hurting. but i think i make up for it in presence. so far the shows have went well, karoliena and i go out there and give 200%. no drinking,no drugs before the shows. see ya soon. e+k

setlist
stay gold.
long shadow.( joe strummer cover with johnny)
tbe devil fears my name.
3 on the tree.
radioactive rockabilly
tom dooley.

OOC: Lost my writing stroke for a while. Had some other matters in the real word to attend too. Happens to the best of us pretend rock stars you know!

Damn, where did all the time go? For some reason it seems like time has conspired to speed up on me unexpectedly. I guess without Grandpa Jack around it decided that were was no reason to keep going at the dragging pace it once did. There were the rare moments though. On the beaches of Carolina from what I can remember. Erich and I shared a bottle of Southern Comfort while swapping songs around a rather shoddy campfire. We wasted the better liquor we had by pouring it on the fire to keep the flames going. A waste that seemed practical at the time. Those are the moments that seem more real and slow to me than anything else. Mr. Hess is surprisingly deep and sagely sometimes in moments like that so it's a rare form for him. I'm convince that there maybe some kind of countrified Buddha inside him that he hasn't tapped into much. We agreed that the absence was an awkward one, speculated on him out drinking Jesus, and how many he was to pick up in the after life. I'm sure everyone in Heaven is probably on the floor right now and he's off chasing Marilyn Monroe's skirt up there. Something that he couldn't be more happier about I'm sure.

Mississippi and the delta area down there is very much like revered holy ground for me. I enjoy going to Clarksdale and the Blues Museum there. Erich and I both made sure we had time to make a small pilgrimage through it before we went to where we were supposed to play. I'll make sure I head to Ittabena on my next time through to see the BB King Museum as well. I ran into a two older gentleman that had been alive long enough to know Son House which was a mystery to me at how they were still alive. Listening to them talk and play it is a wonder to my how these men weren't recorded. Seems like there are still genius bluesmen down there that will be forever undiscovered. It's a privilege to meet and talk to these guys. It's like being in the presence of another era completely. Most of the time Erich and I just stayed quiet. You listen when people talk. Especially if they're an elder to you. I don't care if they're spitting out dementia laden gibberish. I gurantee you will get some kind of wisdom from it.

Heading to New Orleans tomorrow. It's going to be a party. One of my favorite places to play. Cajuns are the nicest people in the world. Also the food is absolutely amazing.

ooc:i hear you on that mr squeeg.other than goofy interaction type things,i cant write worth a damn lately. my post for "sightseeing on the last road to hell" was dismal, even by my low standards. that post you did however, was damn near beautiful.

ok,our "no drinking before shows" didnt last long.we found ourselves making up for lost time afterwards and abusing our innards even more. plus if not plastered,i am petrified of messing up on stage.so....it works on many levels. on the beach with johnnhy will be one of my most treasured memories...well,memories that dont involve foxy ladies. drinking with a friend on the beach in the glow of a campfire? nothing in this world can compare.it's like the world just stops and you have your moment.everything connects and you can see it all laid bare for you to examine with mad scientist goggles.i'd like to say that broke me from ever drinking southern comfort again....but i'm swigging some now. karoliena is driving. i am not irresponsible enough to drink, write and drive at the same time.

clarksdale was fun as hell. truth be told, and i know it's near blasphemy for a rockabilly cat....i dont know much about blues.well,i didnt before this stint with mr johnny. he didnt even berate me all that much for being oblivious to almost one of the more important genres of music. i love new orleans. the once elegant, but now terribly run down-ness speaks to me. i am also bringing my OWN absinthe to the old absinthe house! last time i was there, they didnt even have a single bottle! how can you have absinthe in your name, but not serve it?>!

Not sure what possessed me to go through Indiana. Not much here besides farmland. I can barely remember New Orleans except for vague flashbacks of drunkenly staggering down bourbon street trying to find a decent hole in the wall bar to fall into. My journey with Mr. Hess down that row of bars was a blur that I can recall what was a good time. Another tour with this man and our drunken male bonding has made our friendship a tighter one. In my drunken haze that night I was pretty sure I saw either Elvis or Buddy Holly speaking to me in a vision that evening. I think it's a sign that myself and Mr. Hess should start a rockabilly side project. I've been interested in heading down that road. Myself and Erich know each other so well as musician's that it seems only natural. He's a natural gifted rhythmist and with my picking flair I have a feeling we could make heads explode with a blues rockabilly garage band distortion that would grab people by the balls and squeeze until they burst. Also that night I found a number in my pocket of a the chick in the band that we caught in the bar that evening late after our show was over. Hesitant to call her because I'm afraid that I don't have the drunken charm on my side any more. Women seem hard to converse with more with a sober mind. Considering I only met her, we didn't knock boots, and I barely remember speaking to her. Just got this photo go on. Erich says she's a looker. Thank God I wasn't wearing the booze goggles on this one.

new orleans was everything that new orleans should be. dirty, unclean and drunken. johnny and hit the old absinthe house and were promptly thrown out.i dont remember the details, but i am sure it involved ranting at the bartender and threatening the daiquiri machines.seriously? daiquiri machines in this hallowed area? fuck that. johnny and i busked for spare change,we did a rousing rendition of "house of the rising sun". it seemed appropriate given our location. with our earnings,we turned around and bought booze for any and all panhandlers we came across. karma my friends.karma.
if johnny recieved a visit from elvis,i am angry.as elvis swore he was my patron saint.if buddy holly appeared to johnny,i am jealous.i've been waiting for buddy for years.even if elvis claims buddy wants to kick my ass for ripping him off. johnny floated the idea of a project to me,and i'd be an asshole if i refused.i take a strong stand against assholeness. so the project shall exist! johnny picked up the number of a fox! she scared me...and that only makes her all the more attractive. maybe johnny should bring her into the porject...

Cleveland is the only city in Ohio that I actually like. I can take my pilgrimage to the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame like the wayward bedraggled monk that I am in away. Except I'm not so much for the celibacy thing. Enjoyed the show we put on tonight though it was an earlier one. We lead the crowd in a big sing along of "Cleveland Rocks" which it does. If I was forced to relocate to Ohio. Cleveland would be my city of choice. I usually have the gigs slightly earlier the closer to the end of the tour we get. So I can enjoy my surroundings more as I get closer to home. Naturally I always start and end my tours at home. I enjoy the bitterness of leaving home and the relief of coming home to it. Got a little Wallflowers on the stereo at the moment. Jake isn't his dad that's for sure but he's a damn good artist in his own right. Sharing a drink with Mr. Hess at the Hard Rock at the moment. Checking out the memorabilia. Gonna find the manager and see if I can't convince him to let me by that Hendrix strat on the wall. I'm not leaving here without leaving with some piece of memorabilia that they got tacked up in the place. I normally don't flaunt money. But I feel like walking out with something looking like I stole it and grinning like a mad man. That guitar is going home with me. Another drink and I'm gonna be on the bar trying to pull it down myself. Now I like the Hard Rock establishments don't get me wrong. I just want that damn guitar.

today found Johnny and I neck deep in Cleveland. I am pretty sure I still hav family in this state, fuck if I know them and fuck if they know me. They would be very distant relatives,if they even exist. Cleveland, indeed does rock! Drew Cary was one of the few tv shows of that Ilk that I dig. The reverend Horton heat appeared on it,so that gives it an ok in my book. We made the trip to the rock hall. This is one of the reasons why I love traveling with Johnny, his enthusiasm is infectious and makes me forget I'm a crusty old punk rocker who hates everything. Crazy additions of disco and silly one hit wonders aside, I loved the rock all. The early rock and roll memorabilia was the closest this chap has been to heaven. I doubt my guitar will ever hang in here...but a man can dream. So glad the clash were inducted. Damn shame joe strummer isn't still around. Note to self: next show do a cover of white riot with Johnny. Seeing Johnny fall in love with hendrix's guitar was great. I don't profess to be able to speak to the dead...aside from Elvis Presley, but I think Jimi wanted Johnny to have that guitar. Myself? My holy grail guitar is Eddie cochran's gretsch that was I. The car when he was killed. Not only was it eddies, but Marc bolas of T. rex cut his teeth on it. I have no idea where it resides today. On of Johnny ramone's mosrites would be killer too.

Seeing the highway sign welcoming me home to West Virginia is always a welcome one. After seeing so much of the country it's always good to see the hills and valleys of where I call home. It's always good to come home of course. I'm always welcomed by friends and complete strangers after a long tour. This was another good one with Erich. The man's becoming a good buddy and I can say at this point that I refuse to tour without him now. So he and I are pretty much becoming inseparable any more. Which isn't a bad thing. He's like the brother I never had laced with a bit of drunk cousin and crazy uncle. The crowd loved the rendition of "Country Roads" that we banged out and followed it up with a more classic version of "West Virginia Hills" complete with standard bluegrass instruments. I'll probably be heading down Erich's way soon to relax in the of Duke of Winchester for a bit. Naturally he's not leaving until we've partied proper at my house and got drunk in the back yard. As per Thanksgiving Tradition. Erich's pretty much family at this point now anyway. Might as well introduce him to the rest of my clan.
