Gilded are no strangers to the music scene. Reich and Wong were in a previous band together, Spangle, which also had roots in Albuquerque and received similar attention from indie sources but dissolved before a proper release. Willis made various guest appearances in related outfits throughout the area, earning a reputation for his often manic percussion skills. Together they form a cohesive group that delivers music with an emotional profoundness that is chilling.
Despite a lack of label, they've been able to get a demo circulating in the form of a DVD. Clocking in around forty-five minutes, the feature is essentially a sampler of what the band has to offer. A total of five tracks are laid out over a picturesque early morning wintery forest explored with slow pans of frozen trees, streams, and everything inbetween -- fitting for the holiday season when you think about it. Vocal-wise, Reich could be considered "warbird", with the way she belts out with wild abandon. Wong, meanwhile, adopts a more subdued role, coming off as the voice of reason that dances around the distinct warbles of her partner. Willis keeps up with them nicely, pounding out a beat that rattles and jars in all the right places.
In short? Keep an eye on these kids. They have a long and hopefully prosperous road ahead of them.
