I want to discover and help struggling artists instead of being the tool for someones latest #1 so that my house can get bigger. I think I've been open and honest about the whole event.

OOC: Thanks. The label article was especially fun. I got to solidify the label rivalry while making Vin seem like a bit of an ass whilst (I hope) making his intentions clear.

Stephanie Fierce: Well you know it didn't work out pretty well for you did it? As I've said, I've lost my respect for you and I really don't want anything to do with you now forward and It would be awesome if you felt the same.

Now onto North Hill, I feel like their mission is to support their artists without being 'all about business' and while I may be leaving the label, only because I need time for HER and because my contract is actually finished, I still will be involved with the label and believe that the label is one, if not he best out at the moment. So good luck competing with that buddy.

OOC: Honestly that must of taken some time, good job with organizing it all, it came out pretty descent :)

Vin: Fuck this. You clearly read the one sentence in the article where I said signing you was a mistake and then ignored everything else and everything else I've said about the label in the past year. I'm gonna go play my guitar.

OOC: Thanks everyone. Hopefully I can keep it up and do this more than once every six months. :p

Max-Volume Year Summary Edition!
Yay!It's that time of year. The time when this magazine highlights the best, and in the most snarky-asshole way possible, tells you the worst of 2012. We'll be writing about a few different artists over the week, no more than ten but probably close to five, that we feel were the artists of the year. We could do reader polls and all that shit but you dont buy Max-Volume to find out what you think because you already know. You buy it to find out what someone with more life experience, better taste in music, and a higher IQ than you think. In other words you read it to find out what the writers here at Max-Volume think. And we could sit here and say that we will only talk about music that we think is good but thats a lie. We could also say we will only talk about what was successful, also a lie. We're going to base our artists of the year on what had the largest impact this year so that could be the biggest charting artist that we couldn't get out of our heads or a band that made a great record that was more of an underground success. Expect the first announcement very soon!

Albums!
Yeah we'll do ten albums too. Several lists. One like the artists that is purely based on impact and not what we like or what is good. Then we will get to the nice lists of what should have been big in 2012 whether it was or not: in other words our favorite albums.

OOC: Wanted to do the first two in one post but the code got all screwed up so two posts it is.

#10 - Bianca Moretti
UserPostedImage
In a year dominated by pop Bianca Moretti did one of the hardest things to do in the industry: sound nothing like anyone else and have a debut EP that goes #1 for three separate weeks. We should just sit back and realize that an album with lots of mandolin was #1 while artists like Vanity and Stephanie Fierce were #2 behind her. Score one for hipsters everywhere! Of course hipsters probably hate her now because she was #1. Those cheeky hipsters. Like her or not, everyone should realize that no one like Bianca Moretti was able to breakthrough into the mainstream this year except well... Bianca Moretti. "Notebook and Pen" isn't the best release this year or even top tier but for radio listeners it was sure as hell different from everything else and that's worthy of praise making Bianca Moretti our tenth ranked artists of the year.

#9 - Weekend
UserPostedImage
If we were basing this list off of most media attention these guys would probably be #1. Drug addicted, and unable to function in relationships or use condoms these guys have become a sensation and even people who hate them and their music and their brand have to recognize that. Whether future pop icons or future has been contest participants still remains to be seen. Many people in the music journalism world would like to forget about Weekend but their album "Fired Up" was a key player in the music world this year with a debut at #1 and the re-issue "Fired Up: Reloaded" also debuted at #1. See Weekend was to the music world what 50 Shades of Gray was to the book world: Everyone had an opinion, most fans were women, most men were uncomfortable, and in the end it was full of scandal. But Weekend is a force to be reckoned with now and they have sure as hell had an impact making them #9 in our list of artists of the year.

Listen To: Everything About You

Honorable Mention: Aubrey Mikkel
Winning the biggest talent competition in music, having a few number one singles and albums made her a name we talked about a lot in determining the list. her career started late in the year though and she'd be better suited on a most anticipated list than a best of list because her career is probably just getting started.

#8 - Abie Lena
UserPostedImage
In a year of concept albums, synth-loaded pop and dance, and over-creative legends pumping out their next thing, Abie Lena accomplished the difficult task of being so simple she was brilliant. A handful of FCA and Chaos Awards to her name this year as well as a #1 album "Seasons", a couple #1 singles and one of the most successful music videos of the year, Lena earned success in music this year not by being the most unique artist, not by being the most talked about artist, not by having the best lyrics or the best musicianship, and not by having a massive brand or gimmick pushing her to success but just by being damn good at what she does. No one in 2012 got by on the outstanding talent of her singing better than Abie Lena did. This alone would be an accomplishment, but it's made bigger by the fact that people in the music critic world were starting to wonder if it could even still be done, but she proved it could! She should be on everyone's list of the best of 2012 and she's #8 on ours.

#7 - Isaac Lovelock
UserPostedImage
Looking back at the charts and headlines, it was a dry year for the hip-hop/rap world. All the spark was in rock and pop this year. At least almost all of it. Appearing in songs with Aubrey Mikkel, Nadia Berry, and Anna Viliot just to name a few, Isaac Lovelock is the type of artist that no one could have seen coming. To give an example of the hype that comes just with Lovelock's name, his three song mixtape "Charm City" was ranked #18 in Culture Uncut's Albums of the Year higher than the likes of Stephanie Fierce, Tisha Jackson, Weekend, and James Urie. That is fucking insane. It has three songs on it! Awards to his name already Lovelock has the best of his career ahead of him, but he was part of the hottest collaborations of the year and the most talked about rapper I've seen in quite a long time. I'd call him the Messiah of rap... but it'd probably go to his head and he'd write a song about it. Now that I hink about it that's a great idea! He's rap's messiah and our #7 artist of the year.

Honorable Mention: Glamazon
Although dark, gore-loving popstars are absolutely something we're into at Max-Volume, Glamazon didnt make the big list. But her 2012 album "Ashes to Ashes" was still a fun listen, and lets face it shes just cool.

Daniel: Loved all the artists so far. Bianca Moretti definitely deserved a higher place on the list though. Also, I never noticed how similar Abi Lena's "Baby Hit the Road" sounded to Stephanie Fierce's "Back To Fierce" 0_o Looking forward to see who's next on the list!

#6 - Brandon Caulfield
UserPostedImage
Delivering one of our favorite albums of the year, "Tales From the Heartlands", Brandon Caulfield with all his country and Americana twang created a singer-songwriter record for a new generation of fans. With a couple of #1 singles he proved that he is more than a second rate Ryan Ross Hernandez. He has earned such a high spot on out list just by the sheer quality of the songs on his 2012 release. The songs are relevant and well written and leave the listener wanting more. Caulfield is the kind of artist that shouldn't fit in music right now. He should fit about fifty years in the past but he proves you can still make folky rock songs ans find a niche in the industry. That and damn good songs ontop of it make him #6 on our list this year.

#5 - Reported Failure
UserPostedImage
Abie Lena is on this list for being simple, Reported Failure is here for being complex. With their 2012 release "Darkness" Reported Failure created an album that was as much Phantom of the Opera and West Side Story as it was Nevermind and Houses of The Holy. Rendering the Sacramento quintet three #1 singles it brought hard rock (And I say hard rock knowing that I'll get 100 hate letters tomorrow from fans telling me what genre Reported Failure actually is) back onto the radio. The band created their most epic release to date and released two more singles not from Darkness, both debuted at #1. Headlining three separate tours this year they've been busy. But this isn't what makes them #5 on our list. They are #5 because with Darkness and their tours and #1 singles they've reached a level this year that Mind or Infinite were at a couple years ago and they're the first rock band since those two bands to do it.

Listen To: Being Man

Honorable Mention: James Urie
We at Max-Volume have a natural rock bias. Because of that we wanted to put James Urie on the big list. He's had a great year with a great album and one of our favorite songs of the year, "Broken (Ft. Lily)", but Urie didn't quite reach his full potential this year.

#4 - Ryan Ross Hernandez
UserPostedImage
Yup, this guy. Although released in late 2011, "Running Changes" was a highlight of Hernandez's career and gave him a #1 album and a few hit singles. It was a great rock album. Then RRH talked about his distaste for most pop music and brought up a name foreign to some youngsters: Bob Dylan. "A Break In The Clouds" was Ryan Ross Hernandez's folk album. It was awkward, out of place, and archaic, but it was also one of the best things to happen this whole year. With the album he proved again that he is an artist and that he makes the music world play by his rules so he can make whatever type of album he wants. Then he further increased his influence in the music world with the creation of North Hill Records which is now arguably in the top three record labels in the business. Hernandez is a legend. And to pick one reason why this year in particular he is #4 on our list would be overthinking it because the only thing any reader needs to know is that Ryan Ross Hernandez makes music his bitch. After knowing that everything else just falls into place.

#3 - Isabel
UserPostedImage
Us at Max-Volume will basque in our glory of having seen Isabel Merjos coming as we listen her as one of the most likely to be huge in 2012 and put her on the cover in July, but even we didn't think she'd get as big as she did. With a handful of FCA's and Chaos Awards plus a handful of #1 singles, a world tour, and a new record that isn't half bad, Isabel was going to be on our list for the best of 2012 somewhere. she especially was after her album "Dancing in the Dark" went #1 two weeks in a row. Then it went #1 three weeks in a row and we knew something big was happening. Abie Lena knocked Isabel off the top before Isabel reclaimed it for four more weeks in a row at #1. Isabel has spent nine separate weeks at the top of the albums chart and has gone diamond in less than six months since it's release. Isabel created the most successful album of 2012. She will probably never have another year as good as 2012 and it will probably be a long time before anyone has an album as successful as hers. Dancing in the Dark made Isabel #3 on our list this year.

#2 - Riot! in the Boulevard
UserPostedImage
There are so many reasons to love a band like Riot! in the Boulevard. They have a great lineup with excellent musicians and a captivating frontwoman. Their music is fun and easy to listen to but also can go beyond the teenage pop-punk realm. This was a year that saw Riot! expand and become a more legitimate band rather than the latest big thing. They were the busiest band by far this year with the release of "Cradle To The Grave", "Crossroads" and a live album all this year as well as taking part in several different tours. They are the hardest working band around. What they gained from all their hard work wasn't just a few #1 albums (All of Riot!'s releases this year went #1) but a new place among the top tier group of bands currently active in the industry, and plus lets face it they just fucking rock!

#1 - Nadia Berry
UserPostedImage
Ok lets be honest. If you didn't think Nadia Berry was going to be #1 after you found out she wasnt #10, #9, #8, #7, #6, #5, #4, #3, or #2 then you probably dont live on this planet in which case greetings, listen to Nadia Berry shes the biggest thing to happen to 2012. She released three albums, "Open Heart Surgery", "Hera", and "The Collection", all of which hit #1, she earned a pile of Chaos Awards and FCA's, she started a record label with boyfriend Ryan Ross Hernandez, oh and she's also hot which can't hurt. She achieved superstardom and in a few years when we look back at 2012 her songs may be the only ones we really remember because well... Not only are they good they are also inescapable. Trying not to hear Nadia Berry this year would be like trying not to see the color black because even though it isn't the most dominating, vibrant color or even the most common it is in every room of every house in the world.

We're going to be more active in 2013 than we were in 2012. We will try to either monthly or weekly publish an article highlighting the weeks events and new releases and will probably do a few full issues throughout the year. We are looking for any guest column. so send us an email (OOC: PM me) if you have anything to contribute no matter who it is about. It could be a playlist, an article, an interview, a review, or a regular column (OOC: Seriously write something. It'd be fun. You can just write random articles about your own artists). We'll give more info as to what is to come soon but its coming.

Culture Uncut is basically for gossip, and some news, but it makes it so there's one thread for all of it from every artist. This can be like that but for releases from different artists. Also dont be offended when I give a bad review. it isn't personal. Most reviews are supposed to be mostly negative and even comically negative. And obviously I can't do a review of every single but I'll try to mention all the ones I can.

A team of producers and writers went into Chanel's latest single which became available on New Years Day. The result is a song that is trying to be a hit. From the basic lyrics to the massively hooky chorus the song screams "LISTEN TO ME DAMNIT". After pop and rock dominated 2012, Chanel hopes to bring R&B back as being relevant in 2013. The ballad is four-and-a-half minutes of overproduced, overdramatic poppy R&B but damn.... Chanel can sing. The reason "Raising Hell & Amazing Grace" is good is because Chanel makes it so. This girl can sing and over-dramatic or not, I went back for repeated listens because her voice sounds so damn good.

I am a firm believer that artists write their best stuff when they are in pain. I don't care what genre an artist is they will never top the record that they wrote after having serious, deep trouble in their life. Vanity released "Good Mourning" last year and with it the pop legend made the darkest and in my opinion best record of her career. Now she's back with a new single "Brave". It is a dance track and the title kind of says it all. The gay pop icon is urging gays around the world to be brave and stand up for themselves. Vanity declares that "When Bitches bite we bite back harder" in what is lyrically a good song especially considering that it could have been extremely cliche as uplifting songs with a similar message usually are. Musically its nothing groundbreaking. If Vanity has it her way this will be played in clubs all around the world and well it probably will because shes Vanity and being Vanity has its benefits. Overall a good song, but nothing groundbreaking and probably forgettable.

BOYBAND ALERT. Now that the haters have gracefully skipped over this review we can pretend for a minute that it's a legitimate song worthy of a legitimate review because well... All songs should be treated equally even bubblegum pop. And it is bubblegum pop. The boys in The Zone spend three minutes singing about how a girl who is insecure about herself shouldn't be because she's actually pretty. And its all cute and fun if you're a twelve year old girl. It's simple with little more than an acoustic guitar backing up the four boys. And the boys sing fine. No one gives a vocal performance that makes me want to listen to it again but everyone is on key. With their previous singles just skimming the top ten, The Zone are in the awkward position of not even being the most successful artist of their kind. With a less than mediocre single like this it seems unlikely to change.

With Julia Volkova, James Urie, and the songwriting help and production of Vin Peters it seems like "The Bite" would be a big deal. It seems like the rock scene should be exploding with the buzz and potential of the song, but there's one thing kind of holding it back: vampires. Although Volkova has said its more of an anti-Twilight song than praising them, at this point Twilight has poisoned the vampire well. Anything related to vampires will automatically be compared to it or just be ripping it off. So Max-Volume would like to officially tell artists: STOP WRITING ABOUT STUPID BULLSHIT. It makes you seem like you're trying to hard and makes you seem less legitimate as an artist. With that said "The Bite" isnt a bad song. It is catchy and the lyrics are hard hitting and raunchy. The instrumentation is well done and creepy to fit the theme. But vampires?

Other Releases/News

Brandon Caulfield came out with a new single "Arizona". It's from his highly anticipated fourth album which is due out early this year. Nick Palmer also made a comeback single that was released out of the blue on christmas just in time for last weeks charts. It hit #2 on the digital downloads which is honestly quite surprising considering the guy hasn't released any single, done an interview, or any other promotion in over a year besides a spot on Carnival of Sounds last summer before checking in to rehab. Serenity Scott is back so.... That should be fun. Ada von Wannemaker's debut album is out but if you're reading this you're probably not hipster enough to know who she is. Maybe check it out. We might be reviewing it soon (OOC: No promises. But I'd like to). Stephanie Fierce revealed this week that her next album will be titled "Immortal" which is appropriate because she seems like she will never stop releasing more albums.

Vanity: Of course, I was hoping for top marks, but I'll be grateful and accept the 3.5, because I appreciate the time you've taken to review my single. I'm glad you liked the lyrics at the very least, and I will make sure my song isn't fucking forgettable because I will make sure it is heard EVERYWHERE, darling.

OOC: Love the top 10 list you did, as well as the new release feature. Definitely makes the forum a lot more fun with little things like that, so thank you! :)
