JENNIFER ARMSTRONG TALKS ABOUT NEW ALBUM|TWENTY-THREE! "It's probably the closest you'll get to knowing me as a person and as an artist."
With only a few days, (7 to be exact), left until Jennifer Armstrong's new album is released, the singer goes into detail about the album and what inspired her to include that tracks on it that she did. A few days ago, the official album cover and track list was revealed as well as who she collaborated with on the album. She sat down with Culture Uncut and gave brief but detailed information about recording and all the events that impacted her to record. She also tells her what she expects from the album in terms of failing or succeeding and how she's preparing for the big release.
On Recording"I recorded the album in about a years time so I have had a long time to work on it. It's like my baby right now. (Laughs) I just want to see it do good. Most of the songs I just sat there and wrote and wrote and wrote. I had a purpose for the album and I had to try to get my point across. I think this one is better than my last album. It was really, almost sort of like an introduction of me but I think this one really shows who I am and what I'm about. There wasn't any boundaries, nothing was off limits for me so I just wrote what I felt about anything. I had some amazing writers to help me like Phil N. He's really good with getting you to write how you really feel and so is Sunny Monroe. They encourage you to just expose yourself and hold nothing back which is what I did with this album, I held nothing back. There's still some unanswered questions but that's the fun about music and albums. I have all the time I need to answer all the questions I get. I was in the studio for majority of the year, I literally lived there. It was almost like a second rehab for me. I got everything out that I wanted to say so far. It's probably the closest you'll get to knowing me as a person and as an artist. It's just really personal, a personal album for me. I didn't make all of this up, it came from my heart and soul, I've lived and breathed through these experiences and that's where all the emotion came from. You can't fake this kind of emotion."On Influences for Album"As far as who influenced me in this album, I think once you hear it, it's pretty self explanatory. There's a lot of Pop and R&B sounds in it because I love both of those genres a lot and I realize most of my singles have been more Pop/Rock and not much R&B so I kinda experimented with it. I'd like to think there was a lot of soulfulness too. I used a lot of different sounds that I haven't before so the whole album is basically different genres into one. You get a little Pop, a little Rock, a little R&B, some piano, it just has everything I like. Gia encouraged me to not be shy and to really go for it on these songs. You can hear attitude, you can hear heartbreak, you can hear sadness, you can hear bitterness, it's an album that if nothing else will make you feel something. There's a lot of Diva like feel to it, sort of like a 'This is my voice, I'm using it for this.' I wanted it to sound not just like a typical Pop album but I want it to be so much more than that. I want people to listen to the album and not even think of genres to categorize it in. It's just an album with these songs on here and each of them have a message and reasoning behind it."On Expectations of Album"If nothing else, I want this to be a reminder to people that it is possible to be someone other than what people think you'll be. It's also never too late to get yourself together. My life was a complete mess a few months ago but it all somehow shifted and now I'm releasing this album. I think everyone just needs something to believe in and for me I keep my faith. I don't really have a set number or anything in mind. The album could flop but the message could still get across to people and that would be okay. I've been waiting for this album to be released for a long time. Maybe the break was better for me because it gave me a lot to write about, a lot to talk about and it just makes the record more relatable and not just some record I made to become famous. Everything on there is true and exactly what I think and feel or have thought and felt." On Direction of Album"You can expect a lot of emotions on this album. As I said before, it's a tribute to my brother and some people may not get that. I'm making the album a tribute to him because he passed away and a lot of the songs on there are specifically about him. The whole album is really centered around what I was feeling and going through when the accident happened and after it happened. I spent a lot of time in rehab, I completely gave myself a personality makeover, I'm not the same person I was 6 months ago. This album really helps to show that. I do have those days where I just want to lose it but I also have those days where it's incredible. The album, you can hear all of that. It's meant to let you in on my life and my experiences. I could have rushed this and released it when people wanted it to be released but I slowed down and took my time. I think the end result is much better than what would have been released. There's more slow songs and ballads but that's because I wasn't all that happy most of the time. There's also songs about love and triumph, being confident and feeling amazing. It's just completely my album."On Collaborations"I wanted to use as few collaborations as I could on the album because I didn't want it to be overshadowed by others. I wanted to focus in on me but I also wanted to include some artists that I really wanted to collaborate with (Laughs) I just had to collaborate with them and I'm glad that I did. I count my collaborations as producers and writers I've never worked with before. Bianca Moretti, we've worked together before on A Smile To Remember and she really made that song incredible. She has a way with her lyrics that is almost incomparable to anyone else. Sunny is always a favorite of mine to work with because I truly believe she brings out the best in me. Phil N. has a resume with some of the biggest artists so of course he's a genius in the studio. Gia is a mastermind when it comes to making beats. She just knows what you need and what you want so I always trust her when it comes to a single. She hasn't steered me wrong (Laughs). Working with Jacob Estrada was cool. He's a real relaxed guy in the studio and just in general, he's also great at lyrics plus he owed me since I worked with him before. Andrea, to me, has a lot of potential and I think it was time for people to see just how good of a singer she is. I couldn't have thought of a more perfect track than Say It To My Face for her. She's always been picked on by people and she's really talented so it was like a reminder. We've always been able to be friends so it was easy to work with her."So are YOU excited for Miss Armstrong's new album?
