Rage Against the Machine (Alternative Metal)

R.E.M. (Alternative Rock) (Again mainstream)
Nirvana (Grunge)

Those are probably my favorite bands. Except the Butthole Surfers have only one good song so they aren't really a favorite but their song is.

I liked them before American Idiot and I especially liked "Basket Case" and "Brain Stew"

I like his older music, but I classified him as exciting because he knows how to put on a show.

he doesn't. i saw him once when i liked him and i thought it was the worst show i've ever seen. he was headlining on a festival and he played less than one hour because he was doing who-knows-what. he disappeared from the stage like three times. it was awful.

they're not that different. it's rock exposed in different ways. and grunge is somehow a point between punk and metal, so...
by the way, i think the butthole surfers are not stoner.

Yes, although within the holy trinity of Antichrist Superstar, Mechanical Animals, Holy Wood, they're actually pretty damned good, thoughtful clever lyrics.

Listened to a bit of The Mars Volta early, their okay. Im not sure about the singer though.

Too distinctive for you?

See now, if it was me who said something this patronising to AJ, he'd have got all annoyed with me again :p

I'm not spamming, honest. I'm just too lazy to edit a post.

So yeah, I've got to say that this is spot on. First time I heard them was pretty much the first time I ever really liked a hip-hop track, Opiate The Masses. I love them. And yeah, very cool, though I don't know if I'd describe them as exciting per-se.

I mean it depends if we are going for "different" or if we are going for a different band who have a little energy and excitement.

If the latter, I'll throw forward Melt-Banana, Japanese band who play kind of the most poppy & melodic music that could be confused with grindcore imaginable. So insanely catchy at times, and at others just straight forward insane.

Ulver are a Norwegian band who started off as a black metal band in the early/mid-90s, but got to a point at the end of the last decade where they wanted to do something different. Perdition City's main instrument was a saxophone, Blood Inside is an insanely good mix of guitars, electronic instrumentation and fantastic musical innovation to create something that sounds largely like nobody else, and their last album contains my favourite cover ever, a cover of Black Sabbath's 'Solitude'.

Strongly urge you to give that video a chance.

It's not really what he was looking for in the OP though, was it? I mean it's fine if that's what excites you, honestly not having a go. But he did also clarify it with "different" & mentioned no mainstream too. And I think it's fair to say that both those bands are pretty much as mainstream as you can get.

Funnily enough, I love When I Grow Up, bit of a guilty pleasure to be honest :L

However, not a big fan of any other of their stuff.

I love "When I grow Up" (why does it have to be a guilty pleasure, look how many views it got on youtube) I love every song they come out with. Because when I'm really pissed off, I can dance out my anger to their music. It makes me feel powerful to be a woman for some reason.
