In May of 2012, the industry had welcomed the American pop singer Serenity Scott into it's glorious business when she released her debut single Wonderland - which peaked at number five on the charts. From then on, we've all witnessed her beginning her journey in the industry, catching the eye of many iconic names in the business and was seen as true star potential by many. Sailing away into the summer of that same year she had an on and off relationship with rock star James Urie, controversy with other well-known names in music, and a commercially unsuccessful album [Teenage Era] released later that summer as well. Although we usually witness the extinction of artists who have failed with their first album, Serenity is making it loud and clear that even though she's been on a long roller coaster ride with it's usual ups and downs last year, 2013 is a completely different year from the last and she'll continue on with her journey. She sat down to speak with us about her upcoming re-release of Teenage Era, her personal life, her goals, and of coarse her plans in the future regarding her music and more!
How was your childhood life like and how did you develop a passion for a career in the music industry?
Growing up as a child I lived with my brother, my sister, and both of my parents. We all had positive relationships with each other and we lived in a middle-class neighborhood in Los Angeles. Uh.. growing up as a kid I listened to a lot of music by Whitney Houston, Lauren Hill, Madonna, and Nirvana and they inspired me to write music. Whitney - God bless her soul and Madonna inspired me the most to write my own music though. Madonna and Whitney were one of my favorite singers when I was younger and I'm influenced them greatly. Also, when I was younger I had this diary that I had and I would write little lyrics here and there to let out how I was feeling at the time. Like if I was feeling low or angry or whatever, I would always get my little journal and write a few lines in there to just let all of my inner thoughts out. And I think from there my love for music began developing and then eventually I knew exactly what I wanted to become and what I was destined to be.
Was your family supportive of your dreams of becoming a singer?
At first, they didn't really recognize the fact that I wanted to become a singer. When I first spoke to them about it they instantly thought that I wasn't being legit and that I would soon outgrow this vision I had of me becoming a singer. When they really realized that this was really what I wanted to do in life then they started to become more supportive of me.... when I was like 18 that it [laughs]. They realized this when I was debating with myself as for whether or not I was going to attend college. I wasn't going to attend any university because I wanted to be able to focus more on my career and I knew that if I went to college, I wouldn't have had time to do that. So when I explained all of this to my parents, they were basically like 'well hey, Serenity's really serious about this music thing' and that's when my parents really became supportive. Fortunate enough though, I had a long talk with my father about me not going to college but he eventually persuaded me to go and I did. I was proven wrong that I would still be able to attend college and focus on my career at the same time also. My older sister Lisa was always supportive from the start and so was my little brother Jeremy.
Was breaking into the industry difficult for you?
Oh yes! It was without a doubt a workout to get where I am today. I had a lot of obstacles along the way and a lot of barriers that I had to break through to get where I am today. Some people may see it as overnight success though because I became pretty popular after I joined 8 Mile Rock in the spring of last year, but that's really not the case. Since 18, when I was in college, I had been trying to chase my dreams and it was extremely hard for me to try to focus on a career in music AND having to write at least 30 pages of schoolwork every week. Even after I finished college when I turned 21, I still was struggling a bit. Whenever I could, I would often try my best to find tiny venues to perform at and try to get my music out there. I would print out little flyers and would stay out until 12 o'clock at night posting them out on street poles in which ever city I was in at the time just trying to get my name out there. And on top of that, I had people telling me 'Oh, you'll never sell any records. You'll never be successful' and a whole lot more. I've even been told that I have to look or be like someone else to be successful as well. So no, it was hard hard work! [laughs]
You were nominated for different awards on different occasions very early in your career. Do you feel accomplished in any way?
I feel very accomplished and blessed too! When I was nominated for 'Best New Artist' at the Chaos Awards in June of last year, I was in complete awe and I was shocked! It really struck me hard and I remember thinking to myself 'wow, I'm nominated for a Chaos award. I'm going to be attending the biggest awards show on Earth'. So I indeed feel accomplished in a way. Even though I didn't win anything, I'm extremely grateful to be even recognized because I know that there are so many people out there who really want a chance in the industry. So to be up against only FIVE other talented artists is just insane. Also, the same goes for the Fans Choice Awards. I was nominated for 'Best New Artist' there too and I was extremely grateful to be recognized once again. Even though I didn't win any awards at any of those events, being nominated for something means that people recognizes your hard work and your tremendous amount of effort. And I know that the awards will come sooner or later, but I am indeed proud of myself.
Now on to your debut album. As known, Teenage Era wasn't much of a success on the market. Is that your reason for re-releasing it next month? To bring justice to it's sales?
Definitely not. My reason for re-releasing the album is because I feel like the album isn't completed as of yet. I feel like the songs that I've recorded recently is only suitable to be on this record. I mean, I've recorded 10 new songs for this new re-release. I could have easily fitted that into one whole album and release it. But I didn't want to do that because again, I feel like the songs that I wrote and recorded recently only fits for Teenage Era. It wasn't my intention to re-release this album. I was originally planning on releasing my debut E.P. and then I was thinking about releasing a whole new album altogether, but then that's when it came to me that I should just re-package the album with ten brand new songs. People will see what I mean when they hear the record. So about trying to bring justice to the overall sales of the album like how a lot of people assume it to be, no, that is not the case at all.
About Teenage Era: The Re-Up - can you provide more details about the re-release?
Oh yeah, I was waiting for you to ask [laughs]. I'm kidding. But yeah, I basically recorded ten new songs and I'm repackaging Teenage Era with these new songs under the title Teenage Era: The Re-Up. Oh and it's going to be a double disc. The first disc will contain all of the songs from the original album and the second will contain all of the new tracks that I recorded. And uh.. at first I was planning on adding in a third disc containing all of the music videos that I've released but we'll get to that later. Plenty of time for that in the future. But yeah, The Re-Up will be more of an upbeat album and the entire production of it takes Teenage Era to a new level. It's a Serenity Scott masterpiece! Not to mention, something my fans deserved. It won't be pricey at all though, even though it's a double disc and those type of formats usually are.
What's next after The Re-Up? Any touring or new albums?
BOOM! There goes the tricky question [laughs]. Well, I'm working with MAC Cosmetics to release my first lipstick set and my first nail polish set. It'll be very fruity and colorful and it'll be out during this summer without a doubt. Right now, there isn't really much more that I can say about it at the moment but just expect it to be out this summer and you can find it at MACY'S and other retailers. And about touring; I've been longing to tour forever! Just recently I finished touring with Stephanie Fierce on her History Revealed Tour and not to mention, I've toured with Weekend on their world tour and with the incredible Miss Vanity's Good Mourning tour as well. Believe me when I say that I want to tour badly. And my fans can expect a tour soon too! Right now, one of my main goals is to kick off my first tour this year. If not this year, then early on in 2014 for sure. The only reason why I haven't started my own tour yet is because my schedule has been extremely tight with all the recording and writing I've been doing. Including my side projects in my career in business and fashion, aside from my music career. So after The Re-Up my fans can expect major things to come and I promise that it'll all be worth the wait.
Are you dating anyone at the moment? Do you have the urge to start a family one day?
If I'm dating anyone at the moment? No. As of January 2013 I am as single as they come. And of coarse, I'd love to start a family of my own one day. To be honest, I think that I'd be a great mother and it's definitely something that would make me feel fulfilled in life, aside from music. Right now however, I'm not looking to start a family because there's plenty of time down the road for that and it wouldn't be the right time for me to become a mother right now at such a young age. A baby can't have a baby and right now I'm still a baby so an offspring most likely won't happen in a long time. I'm only 24 years old and right now I have to live and experience life a little more before I get into that.
What more do you want to accomplish in life and where do you see yourself 10 years from now?
I have many things that I'd like to accomplish in life. Besides my career in music and fashion, I want to become a human rights activists. I want to become a gay rights activists and most importantly, I want to become the voice of this generation and to become a better role model to all of my fans. I don't want to be that celebrity who's spoiled and only cares for my well-being. I want to take advantage of what I have and help other people. Another one of my top main goals that I'm aiming for is to create an organization for people in need. Now in terms of my career in music, I just want to continue creating music and keep taking my music to new heights. I also want to make more of an impact on pop culture. In ten years from now, I basically just want to complete all of the above.
And as for the final question. Will there be a completely new album out this year? Who would you want to work with on your next record?
I honestly can't say when the next record will be out. I'm not working on a new album as of yet, but as usual, I'm always writing. When I do start working on a new record I'll be sure to notify all of my fans though. And ummm... as I've literally always responded to in almost every interview where they ask me this question - I would love to work with Katie Coyle! She's an amazing artist and her music is truly music gold. Katie is such a sweetheart too so I'm sure it'll be easy to work with her as well. Another somebody that I'd love to work with is Ellie-Grace Summers. Ellie is another amazing artist and I'll be happy to work with her as well. I'd also love to work with Weekend, Brittany Knox, Jacob Estrada, and Vanity! Isabel is someone I'd love to work with as well. I'd work with quite a few names in the industry and I hope I get the chance to work with at least a few of the incredible artists that I named. Until then, all I could do is hope!
OOC: Thanks to everyone who read this! :) Even if you read half of it - still thanks! :)
