'When It Rains' is a song that was written and performed by British singer-songwriter Aimée Rose. The song is of the soul, pop, and blues genres; serving as the second single that's taken off of her upcoming debut album 'Visions' that's due to be out in stores on February 24, 2013. The song was written by Aimée and produced by Jimmy Patel. Although it's mainly of three genres that consists of soul, pop, and blues; 'When It Rains' has other sub-genres and elements of R&B and funk. Lyrically, the song's foundation was built on the description of an abused or scorned lover and is another song that draws influence from Aimée's experiences from her previous relationships. Unlike her debut single 'Moving Mountains' that focused more on the aftermath of her failure of love that she described to have left her emotionally scarred, 'When It Rains' differs - as it takes on more of a "moving on" and "you'll be missing me" theme. As well as bringing in a non-regrettable and a revengeful sound to it. As of February 1st, 2013, 'When It Rains' is available for purchase worldwide and is available for purchase in both CD and digital formats. The song is also available for request on mainstream airplay.
Background Information
Following Aimée's emotional depression after having a fallout with a former lover in 2011; she was eager to draw influence from that experience and began to solely write her own material. Her work on her own new material started from as far back as the end of 2011 until the project neared closer to completion towards the end of 2012. In January 2013, she released her debut/lead single off of her upcoming debut album 'Visions' titled 'Moving Mountains' to much critical and commercial success. 'Moving Mountains' is described as a sorrowful love and heartbreak anthem in which Aimée opens up about the way she felt in her relationship with her former lover. Now some time since her debut single has been released, Rose has opted to open up on what she describes as "the continuation or the sequel to 'Moving Mountains'" with her song 'When It Rains', with the song having a lyrical theme of wanting to moving on and attempting to forget about something that she can't help thinking about.
Since Aimée first met with Jimmy Patel, who's now her manager, she described that as a producer/manager for her he's the perfect match and that she couldn't ask for anyone better. The two have since written and produced songs together for over a year throughout Rose' short career and she describes her professional relationship with Jimmy as unbreakable. Throughout 2012, the two were still working on the tracks for her debut album Visions and 'When It Rains' was the fifth song that was written for the album. Whilst in the process of writing the song, Rose wanted this song to standout from the rest of the tracks off of the album and she wanted to alter the way the style of the lyrics, theme, and concept - which led her to experiment with the American southern 'blues' genre. Also, her urge to alter the lyrics and theme led her to to writing this song solely about being a scorned lover and expressing an attempt of wanting to move on and that she'll make it without that person. After weeks of writing the song, both her and her manager/producer Jimmy Patel worked together on the production of the song - although full production credits goes to Patel. They both completed the demo of the song and both were overly satisfied with the end result. Due to this feeling, the song was turned in to be mixed.
Song Information
The song opened up briefly with guitar playing, followed by drum playing after two seconds into the song. No more than five seconds into the song, Aimée began singing the first verse of the song with in a soul and funky voice and tone, "A spark had flew and set fire to my heart/Who knew you would have caused a burning flame to start?/Around me stood the darkness of the night", Rose continued on singing through the song in a funky voice that tremendously differed from the way she was singing in her debut single 'Moving Mountains', "The sun rose and I seen the reason for my self ignite/Close to war, I had to close all of the doors/The storm showed and down came the rain meeting the floor". Rose then ended out the first verse repeating the first two lines of the song before jumping into the bridge/pre-chorus of the song, "The tears of joy changed to tears of pain/And when the bow came I knew a scar had been made/The tears of joy changed to tears of pain/It replays over again and I just keep saying", Rose ended out the bridge with the rising of the notes of the instruments that were playing and about a few seconds after, she belts out singing "Let it all wash away - oh when it rains" in a long and high note, showing control and the ability of what she can do - instantly impressing the listener. Throughout the chorus, pounding piano keys and chanting backing singers were heard. After ending out the chorus, Rose quickly barged into the second verse singing, "Sounding and pounding, I try to drown them all", before ending that verse out and singing the bridge and the chorus once more. Shortly after, she began singing the third verse and last verse until the song finally reaches its breakdown point, with Rose singing in a softer tone and the instruments softening. As she then started to sing the chorus for the final time - the notes of the instruments playing rose once again and Aimée sung through the chorus in a high head voice note, before ending the song.

"The incredible Aimée Rose was first introduced to the world when a video of her performing in live in London went viral on the internet. With a set-list of 3 and a half original songs, she showed what she can do with her pipes and not only did she wow and leave the audience at the venue in awe, she also wowed the cyber world after her video gained a massive amount of popularity. All of this resulted with Rose inking down her signature on a recording contract with Chaos Records; one of the biggest and most powerful labels around. Not too long after, the wait was over and Aimée dropped her debut single 'Moving Mountains' to much critical and commercial success. Her emotions that were poured onto the record drew much attention to the singer like a magnet and it also drew Rose a fan base. This all left everyone questioning, 'Could this be the voice of the breakthrough act of 2013?' Without a doubt, it's more than likely that Aimée is on the path to super stardom, and she'll just might reach where she deserves to be by the time the ball drops in Times Sq., New York City next year. On January 27th, 2013, Rose debuted a preview of now her second single titled 'When It Rains', giving her growing fan base another reason why to brag about how good she is.
Now with the full release of her second single 'When It Rains' and after listening to it, we here on the behalf of Rolling Stone gives this single a rating of 4.5 stars. The highest we've ever given to a single in quite some time now. When listening to this single, you can almost feel how emotional Aimée was at the time when she recorded this song.
