Katriel Comyns, one of the most promising young artists today, has been working in the music industry for 2 years with his first taste of the biz back in 2011 with his first single, 'One Of You'. The rock inspired track was thought of to be the last we would hear from him, musically anyway as he made circulation around the internet with the infamous Izzy and Kato break up but a few years later, Kato grew up and the rumors almost burned down about a reunion of some sorts with the past couple. Today, the 18 year old is in the studio constantly working on new music and hopes to reach the heights that his former mentor, Kamikaze Kate, had always inspired and trusts he will reach. So just what is it about Kato that attracts such a large fan base? Could it be his good looks? Maybe his charming personality? Judging by his music sheet, it is definitely his talent. Even though he was criticized before for having a large fan base of adolescent girls and for having a seemingly high and "girlish" voice, he's hit puberty and it has treated him well. I sat down with Katriel Comyns, to get the inside scoop on his music and more importantly, what he thinks about his doubters in all of this. Kato is young but he's ready and not naive. Although he has the face of a teenager, he can run with the adults and hang in there too. Receiving praises from some of music's biggest and honored veterans in the game, Kato is a name that will soon be on everyone's lips and iPods. - Ashley Morrison

How would you describe your music to people who never heard of you before?

Kato: I would say it's like a Justin Timberlake meets Usher kind of sound. I love R&B and I love Pop but I just love music in general so I don't mind dabbling in different sounds to fit me. I make songs for everyone but I love making songs for the ladies the most. (Winks then laughs)

Do you play an instrument by chance? What is your favorite instrument above all?

Kato: I play several including drums, piano and guitar. I would say that guitar would be my favorite instrument above all because people make things happen when they can play a guitar. I learned how to play that first so it's always been something I loved to play above all.

Growing up can have an effect on your style of music, especially with influences and people you look up to. What kind of music that is no longer heard on the radio did you listen to growing up as child? Is the music you listened to back then, any different from now?

Kato: I listened to a lot of R&B and Hip Hop music, if you can believe it, I was really into female groups. I just liked to listen to them and hear their voices with the different harmonies. I was also a big Boyz II Men fan. They've inspired me the most even though I'm only one guy. I always try to base everything from R&B though so that it can always come back to that genre because I fell in love with it first. The music back then I feel like it had more meaning and power as opposed to now but then again sometimes people don't want a message. They just wanna dance, have fun and let go but I think it's even better if you can still get a message across.

What was the first song you ever sang in front of a crowd? How did it make you feel?

Kato: The first song I ever sang was 'Aaliyah - At Your Best (You Are Loved)' and I sang that just for me, like after I heard it, I tried to sing it. I had a high voice as a kid so it worked (Laughs). It made me feel like despite my voice being high, I could really do it. I could perform and I wanted to. I thought I could be the next big thing.

What made you realize you wanted a career in music?

Kato: After I performed in front of a crowd and I felt that feeling you get when you've accomplished something and people are proud of you, that's when I knew I had to do this for the rest of my life. There was nothing else I was interested in except singing and performing.

Everyone seems to have a hater or two nowadays. What do you say or feel towards those skeptic people?

Kato: I mean it comes with the career. There's always someone who wants you to fail, there's always someone who you can't impress but you can't focus on the hate, only the love. I like to think of criticism as them helping me to be better. They're pointing out my flaws and then I can work on it and be better than they expected. I always love to prove someone wrong. I think people should focus on themselves and make sure they're at a perfect place in their life then they can talk but it won't hurt me at all.

Artistically, what do you look forward to bringing to music? Do you think that taking risks is something you look forward to doing now so early in your career?

Kato: I want to bring, just the male persona and feel back to music. The industry has changed so much in that it's basically all women. There's nothing wrong with that but I feel like there's a lot of talented guys out there who can just as well be big too and possibly dominate the charts and industry. I want to bring back real R&B and then mix it with Pop and Rock and just be someone who people will say 'Well damn, that white boy can sing just about anything' you know? (Laughs) I look forward to it, I love risks. You'll never know until you try.

Eventually, fans develop the perception of an artist based on songs and image. Some artists, develop a persona that hinders their own true personality. Have you ever done that or plan on doing it?

Kato: Uhh..No. My music is me. What you hear is how I am, how I act, what I say. It's not an act at all. I wanna make it by being myself.

How do you translate your music as live performer? Meaning, how is your music portrayed live? Do you have a band involved? back up dancers? Orchestra? ect.

UserPostedImage

Kato: I have whatever will get the job done (Smiles). I love to dance so I always have back up dancers and sometimes there's a band and I'll play with them. If I ever make a song with an orchestra, I'll let them on the stage too. I want to be like, not trying to compare myself to him, but I want to be like Michael Jackson. When you heard he was performing, you knew it was gonna be a show, that's what I wanna do. I want people to be excited and not to know what to expect when I'm on stage.

What would you say your songs are mostly about?

Kato: It depends on my mood I guess. My songs can be about anything but mostly me. Personal experiences or just how I feel about something.

What has been the biggest challenge for you as an artist or performer?

Kato: Trying to make my transition from being known as just 'Kamikaze Kate's protege' and making a name for myself. I feel like people will always see me as a shadow of her but I have my own mind and I can function on my own.

Tell us about your any new album that's coming out soon. Any upcoming singles? What are some of your favorite songs?
Your most personal song? When is it arriving in stores? What can fans expect?

Kato: Well I'm recording right now and I can predict the album will be out March or April. It's the album everyone's been waiting for so I have a huge expectation to live up to. It's my first ever album, that's enough pressure right there. I have a new single coming, it's a dance song and it's really crazy so I hope fans love that. Some of my favorite songs would be 'Guilty Pleasure,' 'For The Night,' 'Hurt Me Bad,' 'Put In Work,' and some other tracks I'm gonna keep to myself. My most personal song would probably beeeee.....'Hurt Me Bad'. Fans can expect to get some of the best of me, not all of it yet. I'm gonna ease into it and not rush. It's like sex. (Laughs)

As an artist, is there anything in specific you'd like to accomplish?

Kato: I would like to be able to successfully get my music across to my fans and make a name for myself in a good way without having to sell out or do something I don't want to. I wanna play by my own rules.

Your fans obviously love you and support you. Which fan would you say has impressed you the most?v

Kato: I have a fan named Izzy..(Laughs) I'm just playing, But I mean I have a lot and I think any fan that has been with me since day one and hasn't doubted me or left my side, they are the ones I love the most because they are real.

Anyone special you're working with on your album?

Kato: I'm working with a few people like my good friend Rico Love, I'm hopefully gonna be working with this girl by the name of Victoria Black since you know she owes me for doing a little something with her in the studio, I'm working with my boy Dominic Brown. He's one of the executive producers on the album. I just want to be able to work with some of the best, any genre really. I love collaborating with artists because I feel like it gives you a chance to meet new people and step outside your box. There are no limits for me really, as long as I feel it then it's happenin'.

Do you think people will underestimate you with your new music?

Kato: Of course, of course but again, that comes with the work. I know a lot of people have already shut me off and written me off so I don't really think too much about it. I try to be as positive as I can. At the end of the day, I'm doing what I love and it's for the fans. If people don't believe that I have talent then I'll let them believe that. My job is to provide the music and then the critics can either get with me or go against me. I'll still make music either way.

Riley: I really liked this interview. You seem like a really nice guy and your hard work has shown and clearly paid off. I think you've already broken away from being 'Kamikaze Kate's protege' and became your own person. It seems like you've found the sound and image that's right for you and I can't wait for the album :)

OOC: Nice little interview there, great job :)
