It's a mild day in Detroit, Michigan, and I'm waiting at a small cafe by the hotel where Canada's metal maniac Sam Fischer is staying with his wife, Vile Hour singer/pianist Nichole Fischer. Nichole recently made headlines when she was kidnapped by a psychopathic fan. She was missing for ten days before being recovered by the police, after purportedly shooting her captor, Ted Kinder. During that time, her husband received several interview requests and denied all of them. Reports were made that fischer was "in shambles" and "going through and emotional breakdown" during the time of his wife's disappearance. "He was a broken man," says Acts of Hate bassist Jeff Koenig. "He just sat around in the apartment all day waiting for her to come back. Eventually he ended up staying with Castor (Vile Hour's drummer, and coincidentally neighbor to Sam and Nichole.) He was a mess." While it's no question that Fischer was in a state a distress, this does not appear to be the case anymore, as he meets me at the cafe, smiling. He has his phone in one hand, telling Nichole he'll be up after the interview. In the other, he has a bag of groceries for him and his wife. A reminder: bold = us, italics = him.

Thanks for coming..
Thanks for having me.
There's certainly been a lot of buzz recently about your wife's kidnapping. Do you mind the press, or would you rather this be a private matter?
That's a weird question to be asked by the press, *laughs*. I believe that most of the press has generated a positive response. I mean, we got the story out, we got a lot of support from fans, and we encouraged people to help with the case if they could, so, to a degree, it's a good thing. I don't want anybody getting up in my wife's face or pestering her about what happened, though. That would be in bad taste.
I assume that means you don't want to divulge any details about Nichole's...experiences?
That absolutely means that. What I wanted to do with this interview is to simply reassure all the fans that she's okay. But no, I don't want to talk about anything that happened to her, because it's over now. She's okay, she's back in safe hands, and we're working on getting back into the swing of things.
I understand. What about the future of your band? Will Acts of Hate still be appearing at Aphrodisiac Festival?
There was a period of time when Nichole was missing that I...very seriously considered leaving Acts of Hate. I think that without Nichole, I really wouldn't have much reason to continue. It would feel wrong making music, the thing that I love, without her supporting me and being there with me. I was really conflicted. Now that she's back, I can say that I don't want to stop making music, but it's going to be slow. I need to talk to her about Aphrodisiac. I just don't want to leave her when she needs me the most, even if it's just for one day. If she's okay with it, then yeah, I think Acts of Hate will be playing as scheduled. It's up to her though.
Acts of Hate has certainly made their mark on the music industry, and there was talk of work being done on a possible followup to last years "Unholy Creation." What's that about?
We did start working on new material, and we did start working on pre-production, but it didn't feel right. I was putting work - and this was the first time that making music ever felt like work to me - before my family and friends. I was locked in the studio for a week with no outside contact. It wasn't healthy.
Speaking of family, we also hear that your wife is pregnant. Congratulations.
Thanks. I'm actually really excited. I'm going to be the best metal dad the world's ever seen, *laughs*
Traditionally, children and families have put a damper on the rockstar life style. Do you think this is going to be the case?
Two things. One, I don't live a "rockstar lifestyle." The only thing rockstar about me is the fact that I play shows and have fans. I don't drink. I don't smoke. I don't do drugs. I'm not doing stupid shit all the time. I'm like a nagging older brother to the rest of my band. But that's the way I choose to live my life. If I can stay clean and drug free on the road with four other guys that are going apeshit and drinking and ingesting all the substances you can imagine, I think that it's possible for me to make music and be a good father and husband at the same time.
Very inspiring words. Well, thanks alot for the interview, and I hope that I'll catch you at Aphrodisiac.
No problem. And I hope so too.

Sam: you do me too much honor, mr. hess. I think I'm accustomed to being around people who don't share my views on substances. I think the biggest instance of that is the fact that you're one of my best friends.

Erich: I was hoping friendship was the case, but a small part of me has always thought you were waiting for me to die. Then you would point at me and yell to your bandmates, "see?! This is exactly what I was talking about!"

Sam: Mr. hess, after all the shit you've seen and done, when you die, my reaction will probably be "what the fuck killed him?". My theory? Negligible senescence. I think that, barring injury or disease, you might be immortal.

Erich: that's it, I love you. *wipes a tear.* it sucked so fucking bad. I take "fear and loathing" as the yard stick by which Vegas mayhem is measured....and the hangover came up lacking...and it wasnt funny....the list goes on.

Marcia: 'Acts of Hate'. Sounds like what I did to anyone who touched me whilst high!

Matt: Trust me- if these guys are as heavy as you were back a few years, they would sink a millstone tied to a brick shithouse.

Marcia: And the irony is?

Matt: *sigh* that they really are that heavy.
