OverviewAfter just turning 20 in November Clara Thompson is ready to release her debut album. After a rocky start to her career over the past year it seems she's finally made it with a two album deal from Liberation/Nomad Records, a spot on the No Venues Tour II, and now the completion of her first record. The record is a mesh of songs that ride the line between folk, rock, and pop, but Clara's voice is what pulls the album together. It was produced by one of Clara's idols, Katie Coyle, as well as Nomad Records producer Avil Hartman. A release date hasn't been announced but Clara has speculated in interviews that the record will be available in the early part of 2013.
Lyrics/ThemesThe debut album from Clara Thompson is as much autobiography as it is haphazard metaphors and lyrics that seem like they are either about something extremely deep and philosophical or the endless ramblings of a long acid trip. But Clara usually manages to not let her metaphors get in the way of what the album is about: her and mostly her dysfunctional love life. Since starting and then ending the band Infamy around a year ago, Clara has had two failed relationships and there is currently speculation over a third relationship with Reported Failure bassist Matt Collins although both of them have denied it. Clara herself hasn't said anything about who specific songs are about but fans have speculated that "Parachutes and Broken Things", "Brand New Silence", "Forever Ago" are about Infamy co-vocalist Rob Ahrens who dumped Clara and thus broke up the band. Fans also believe that "Take Take Take", "Less Sympathy", and "Mad" are about Mount Olympus vocalist Wil Reasons. Whomever the songs are about, Clara delivers an album that mixes blunt almost comical lyrics with elaborate metaphors for an album that is lyrically distinct from most else that is on the radio today.
Music/SoundIn interviews Clara has stated that she starts all her songs on her guitar. the album rarely has more going on than basic instruments (guitar, bass drums, piano). There is occasional electronics in radio ready songs like "Take Take Take" and the burst of overdriven guitar in songs like "Rule the World" but otherwise the instruments in "Colors" are very basic. It is Clara Thompson's unforgettable tone to her voice and brilliant melodies that keep the album interesting. A consistent flow of pop rock with lots of indie influence gives Clara lots of appeal to rock fans as well as contemporary pop fans. Mostly in the minor tone, her songs aren't anything groundbreaking but they all stay very concise and are distinctly hers.
OOC Notes This is my first serious album thread since Darkness. This time I am having a sound alike for each song. Most of them are just songs that are by the artists in the real world that would be similar to Clara and I like the way they sound but a few are completely based on actual songs and you'll probably be able to tell which ones those are just by the lyrical structure and meter. That's all I really have to say. Enjoy and as always I'd love to have feedback whether OOC or IC. Edited by user 27 January 2013 04:30:01(UTC)
