Riot! In The Boulevard: Studio Time!Location: Capitol Studios, Los Angeles, California
Dates: 22 – 29 April, 2013
Present: Amy Meyer, Justin Mullen, Adam Benjamin, Jason Greenberg, Nathan Mullen
It’s Monday 22nd April, 2013 and although it may seem rather insignificant on the face of it, today is actually an important day in the lives of five young musicians from Las Vegas, Nevada as it marks the first official recording session for Riot! In The Boulevard’s fourth studio album. It follows on from the pattern that begun previously during the final week of March, where the band all arrived back into a studio for the first time since last winter during a brief break from their sold-out world tour in order to begin to demo some new material that they had written in the previous months, this was the beginning of the next chapter of the bands career as they set about discovering just what they feel like they want and need to say on their very next record and those ideas are set to come alive during breaks from their tour in the following months. It is certainly a gruelling schedule for the group of youngsters but it’s the only thing they appear to be focused on.
Discussions between the band early on in this first session is what the general theme of the album will revolve around, and it would certainly appear that the young musicians know exactly what this will be,
“Youth!” explains lead guitarist Justin Mullen,
“That’s where we feel like we should turn our attentions to musically and personally.” the familiar red-haired lead singer of the band then quickly jumps in to the conversation,
“This is how we’re feeling right now. It’s screwed up in a big sort of way, because for the longest time, it’s all been about growth and learning and the previous album was very much a coming of age sort of record in terms of the topics and themes. But each of us have felt recently that we don’t want that right now, we’ve kinda stopped ourselves from growing up too much, really since we’ve been on this tour, we’ve came to the obvious realisation that we’re all young, essentially we’re at the perfect age and we should be having the greatest time of our lives and that’s the intention that we have going into this record. It has to be fun and youthful and exuberant, we want to hear these songs come blaring out of the speakers and we want rock club dance floors being filled instantly because youthful enthusiasm can be a beautiful thing. I ain’t saying we’re gonna make a happy dance record, definitely not but we wanna make a pop-punk record that mixes all emotions of being young, the pain and the pleasure, a record that makes you feel young when you listen to it, it makes you wanna stay out all night or even if you’re older and with responsibilities it can make you want to go back to the time when you were young.”---
A conversation between the band early in the morning generally seems to revolve around the previous evenings antics of either rhythm guitarist Adam Benjamin or Amy Meyer, on this particular morning it’s Adam who is informing the group of the previous night’s outcomes, the highlight of which revolved around Adam’s hidden pursuit of a new female friend, the conversation went a little something like this;
Adam: “I was having an incredible time, losing myself in the music … you know, as I do. But then Sara shows up and suddenly I’m very self-conscious.”
Amy: “Oh my god, Sara was there? Damn, I wish I went with you, how was she looking?”
Adam: “Amazing, which didn’t help”
Justin: “Did someone get wasted and expose themselves again?”
Adam: “No! … she was surprisingly sober”
Justin: “Not who I meant, but carry on”
Adam: “Okay so, I went outside a little later, like about one thirty to go find something to eat and she was standing outside having a cigarette all by her onesies. So she calls me over and she starts chuntering away like she always does, I nod along politely and try to avoid looking at her breasts like I always do.”
Jason: “Like you managed to do that, you know we’ve all seen Sara”
Adam: “Fine, I may have glanced down from time to time … we’re going off track here.”
Amy: “Does she still not know that you’re obsessed with her … is obsessed too harsh a word?”
Nathan: “I think in this context it would be pretty accurate”
Adam: “Shut up! … anyway she’s all like, ‘I haven’t spoken to you for ages’ and ‘Oh we should hang out sometime’ and then she starts asking how long we’re home and all that crap and I answer and we continue talking some more and then boom, her friend comes out and says hello and then she goes, ‘Oh have you met Adam? He’s so sweet, he’s like my little brother’”
Amy: “No way! She did not little brother you … dude that is freaking cold!”
Adam: “I know, right? Evening totally ruined, I went back inside and drunk until my little heart felt nothing anymore”
Jason: “You know what you could do?”
Adam: “What?”
Jason: “Grow a pair!”
Amy: “(Laughs) Leave him alone! He’s fragile. Seriously, next time I see her I’m gonna find out how she really feels about you, she keeps stringing you along dude. I’ll beat her!”

Sweet Abandon Of Youth (Preview)The band assemble in the large recording booth with instruments on hand,
“You guys ready?” says a voice located towards the back of the recording booth from drummer Nathan Mullen, he receives a thumbs up from each of the band members and counts in the song with a slow and steady drum beat which gets progressively louder in time. Justin Mullen then plays the energetic sounding guitar riff and both Jason and Adam join in on the action with the bass and rhythm guitars respectively, creating a fast-paced and energetic backdrop for a song in preparation for the opening vocal delivery from Amy Meyer which continues the fast-paced nature with her quick fire verses as she sings the opening;
“Waking up is the hardest part/Picking the pieces of this shattered heart/Force a smile, or at least fake it/Don’t give up because we can make it/Let’s dance around the fire with the sweet abandon of youth/Knowing that tomorrow we will be forced to grow up/And face the truth, bitter truth.” which adds a punch and power into the song about youthfulness and exuberance something that the band clearly want to put forward in their next record.
The dominance of the song remains the guitar and drums combination which match ideally with the vocal delivery and lyrical theme of the song, evidenced in Amy’s delivery of the next verse which is sung with a raw power;
“So let’s not focus on insecurity/Let’s not become the image of pointless jealousy/Let’s live right now/Don’t think about tomorrow/Live a life without any sorrow/We don’t need to argue or cause a scene/We don’t need to teeter on the brink of anywhere or in between.” and the guitars continue to dominate throughout this two-minute song.
“Waking up is the hardest part
We’re picking the pieces of this shattered heart
Force a smile, or at least fake it
Don’t give up because we can make it
Let’s dance around the fire with the sweet abandon of youth
Knowing that tomorrow we will be forced to grow up
And face the truth, bitter truth
So let’s not focus on insecurity
Let’s not become the image of pointless jealousy
Let’s live right now
Don’t think about tomorrow
Live a life without any sorrow
We don’t need to argue or cause a scene
We don’t need to teeter on the brink or anywhere in between
So let’s not think
We’re too young to worry
Let’s just live in this moment
So just come back to me, come back to bed
Let’s ignore the thoughts running through our head
I think we could start a revolution together
If we can make this last forever
So let’s just dance around the fire tonight
Believe that everything will be alright”Cold Hearts and Broken Memories (Preview)The instrumentalists Nathan, Justin, Jason and Adam are now all assembled in the mixing room which overlooks the entire recording booth. In an attempt to change things up slightly, Amy shouts from the centre of the recording booth towards the direction of the mixing room,
“Cold Hearts and Broken Memories”, the band members then make their way back into the recording booth with both Justin and Adam replacing their electric guitars for acoustics and Amy Meyer now located towards the left side of the booth where a large piano is located, once more the drummer counts the band into action and begins a soft drum beat which is met by the tender sounds of the acoustic guitar strings as this song begins entirely acoustic while Amy delivers the opening verse in a soft almost mournful vocal;
“You hear it all of the time, or so the story goes/There’s a fine art to growing old/But when you’re young/They don’t tell you the story with complete honesty/The fine art of growing old/Is forever a mystery/I just wanna know/Will I go down in flames/Or will I go down in history.” it creates an emotional almost silence briefly before the piano keys begin.
The music gets slightly more dramatic with the inclusion of the piano into the song and that instrument becomes the main element of the song and it’s backed by the acoustic strings and soft drumming in the background, Amy’s vocals remain mournful as she sings out lines like,
“It’s hell in this soul/It’s empty and vacant like there was never anything inside/There’s no reason to show my face/When I’d rather hide.” and then followed by lyrics like,
“I know where I stand/When the people that surround me/Have such cold hearts and broken memories/Sometimes that’s just how it is/Deal with it/I know that I did.” and the piano keys become more dramatic as another verse arrives, Amy sings louder but remains the emotional and mournful vocal;
“So bring out the martyr’s/And stand them all side by side/Bring out each one of the wallflowers/So that they can no longer hide/Bring out the victims/The punks and revolutionaries/Bring out the dreamers of pixies and fairies.”“You hear it all of the time, or so the story goes
There’s a fine art to growing old
But when you’re young
They don’t tell you the story with complete honesty
The fine art of growing old
Is forever a mystery
I just wanna know
Will I go down in flames
Or will I go down in history
And it’s hell in this soul
It’s empty and vacant like there was never anything inside
There’s no reason to show my face
When I’d rather hide
So I’d rather you just left me
Everybody else did anyway
The truth is that I prefer it this way
I know where I stand
When the people that surround me
Have such cold hearts and broken memories
Sometimes that’s just how it is
Deal with it
I know that I did
So bring out the martyr’s
And stand them all side by side
Bring out each one of the wallflowers
So that they can no longer hide
Bring out the victims
The punks and revolutionaries
Bring out the dreamers of pixies and fairies”
