Title: Sweet Unknown
Genre: Comedy-drama
Created by: Ryan Ross Hernandez
Starring: Nadia Berry, Arianna Harley, Ryan Ross Hernandez, Cristina Lake, Issac Lovelock, Isabel Merjos
Country of origin: United States
Language(s): English
No. of seasons: 1
No. of episodes: 13
Executive producer(s): Nadia Berry, Ryan Ross Hernandez, Micahel M. MacDonald
Camera setup: Single-camera
Running time: 45-50 minutes

The famed singer-songwriter/musician Ryan Ross Hernandez has written and starred in his own TV series. In the best kept secret of 2012 while Ryan Ross Hernandez recovered from his vocal surgery, putting a halt to his music career for the better part of the year, it gave him a chance to work on an ambitious side-project. Sweet Unknown is the debut project of Hernandez, as both a writer, actor, and executive producer as the North Hill brand now expands to having its own production company it seems.

In keeping it close to home, the lead cast features Hernandez, alongside his fiancée and fellow recording artist Nadia Berry, whom recently made her acting debut herself in the fifth installment of Scary Movie, scheduled to premiere in April 2013. Joining the pair is a fellow North Hill Records signee and one-half of the successful indie group Hey Lolita, Arianna Harley. It's been confirmed that the series features five main characters, leaving two roles not to be revealed yet.

Sweet Unknown has an initial order of eight episodes for its first season, with an option of three additional. The series will be broadcast on FX in both the United States and United Kingdom, with additional international broadcasting depending on the success of the show in those two markets.

On an official press released interview with Hernandez, the 35 year old gives some insight as to what viewers can expect from the series.

Why a TV series? It's unusual to see a musician go to such different careers, especially creating a show themselves.

Ryan: Sweet Unknown wasn't something I woke up a year ago and said, "you know I'm not gonna be able to tour this album, maybe I'll write a script." The idea for a TV series has been stuck in my head for quite sometime. It was just a matter of making it happen. I'm in a different mindset when I'm writing a song, I need to be in a totally different zone when I started working on this script. The most difficult part was naturally formulating these ideas that I had, into words. It's a different thing to write a chorus in a day than writing a page of a script in a day. They are different areas of writing. I probably started writing the pilot, two in a half years ago. And I continued to write it on-and-off until maybe April or May 2011.

Was it a challenge when you finished the script, to get it greenlit by a television network?

Ryan: It was a challenge, but I liked it. It made me feel in the same way I felt when I was twenty-two years old signing my first record deal. It doesn't mean shit to be famous in a certain area of the entertainment business, that gives you no leverage when you try your luck in another area of it. Maybe it's easy for musicians to get acting roles, but it's not easy to try to sell your own show, a TV series, not some reality bullshit show, to a network. I felt like they had to buy into the idea of it, much like getting a record deal, you have to convince the people who write the checks to believe in you. Which on this occasion took a few tries.

How many networks did you pitch the idea to before FX?

Ryan: Well it was an interesting route before we landed on FX. The first network we went to was CBS, we thought network television, if we got into one of the "Big Four" we were going to do well. But the problem which I realized in the meeting with CBS was that we would have to self-censor and stylize the show in a way it wouldn't seem like the original show I wrote. After that meeting we went to HBO and Showtime; both of which were fairly interested in it, but both thought it would be best if I wasn't the head writer, I could still be part of the writing team but not in-charge. We toyed with the idea for a little, before we got the meeting with FX. Which we felt the show just found a perfect balance with them. We could push the envelope and not limit our options when it came to writing as much.

Do you have a writing staff for the show now?

Ryan: Yes, naturally I needed a writing staff after the pilot. I can't write each script by myself, much less when I get back to recording and touring, it would be impossible for me to write on my own. But I do have final cut on each script, so that's an advantage to have.

How was the casting procedure? Did you already have in mind who you wanted for each character?

Ryan: I felt pretty confident about having the Matthew Hendricks character. I had built him so much in my head, that I was unsure if anyone else could get to know him as much as I do. Emily Moore, which is now Nadia Berry's character, it took a while to come around to the idea of her having that role. But as I wrote more, and got to know Emily, I knew Nads would ace it and she did. The most difficult character, which we did cast, was Arianna's, she plays Autumn, and that's the hardest character on the show. To be Autumn, you need to be a chameleon because there are a lot of different shades to her. I don't think casting any of the lead characters we did, was an easy task. Most of these characters you can't take at face value.

What is the premise of the show?

Ryan: A lot of people probably expect if you have three musicians at the helm of a show, that you're gonna see some sort of music related television series. Sweet Unknown is not that, it's not love traingle either. In a lot of ways I feel we're just following the lives of these people in Los Angeles. It's a dramedy. And we go through a lot of different situations within the show, it gives people a feeling of what happens behind the scenes in the entertainment industry. It's humanizing because you don't get the bullshit version of Hollywood.

Speaking of the characters, could you tell us a bit more about some of them.

Matthew Hendricks: That is my character, who is a talent agent for one of the top talent agencies in the world. He's a multi-dimensional character, he shifts personalities very quickly. In his business he's a no-nonsense kind of businessman, he is ruthless in getting what he wants professional. There is a line early on in the pilot episode where he says in a conversation, "I wished upon a star that I would sellout my own mother to get what I want." That tells a lot about his character with his profession. He uses his charming tactics with women, he kind of gets around. But we learn a lot more about him as the series goes on. I can relate to him in the sense that people don't have a divided opinion of him, you either like him or not.

Emily "Emma" Moore: Emma is feisty. We learn that soon into the pilot. She's an actress who has recently become a major player in Hollywood, one of the most sought out actresses in Hollywood. And her agent is of course, Matthew Hendricks. She's very smart and savvy, which makes for an interesting relationship between her and my character. She likes to challenge people, so that makes for her butting heads with a few people. But in the interior she's a sweet girl, we learn that in some special moments in the series. She's a fun character to write because I think we all know a girl like this. If any character is loosely based on someone I know, it's Emma Moore.

Autumn Snow: Despite her name sounding like some sort of wintertime album, she's not a musician. Autumn is actually a drug dealer. About a year before where the pilot picks up, this young, gorgeous woman is skyrocketing in the modeling world, but one misstep, causes everything she built to crash down on her. So she decides to go into another way of business and becomes the drug supplier to the stars. She's the ex-girlfriend of my character. No character on the show is either good or bad, but Autumn's character tethers between doing the right thing and doing something to get ahead. Matt and her share the same ambition, which makes for some interesting interaction between the two.

Has the network confirmed the premiere date for the show yet?

Ryan: No, we haven't gotten notice of when it will be, but we hope early 2013. 2013 is the only word we've gotten so far, hopefully it won't be too long before everyone who wants to see it is able to.

When will the fans be able to see more of the show?

Ryan: The first trailer will be released within the first week of 2013.

You mentioned it earlier, but what does this mean for your career as a musician?

Ryan: It doesn't change it, it's still my number one priority. I have another month or two of vocal rest, but as soon as get the word from my doctor that I can sing again, I will be back in the studio and back on the road. I can't speak for Nadia and Arianna, but for me this a side-project which is a lot of fun. I believe the second week of January we return to film about three or four episodes in the span of the month. And that's the approach we're taking to it. When all of our schedules match, we film.

What are the possibilities we see some of your fellow artists from the music world, come into the show for a guest starring role or cameo?

Ryan: We've talked about that and it's something we want to do, as long as there is a valid reason to bring them. We're currently working on striking a deal with our first very special guest star. I can't say who it is but I think it'll be a nice surprise for everyone. I don't think you've seen this person in a while.

You've previously said you personally wanted the record label, North Hill Records, to expand to other ventures in the entertainment world. We see you and Nadia Berry as executive producers of Sweet Unknown. Is North Hill Productions a possibility for the brand to add it as a subdivision?

Ryan: To answer your question; yes, North Hill Productions is a possibility. I've said it before that I want North Hill to not just be a record label, I want to build a brand, have North Hill become a staple in the entertainment industry as whole. I won't say too much about it, just that we do have a lot of plans for North Hill in 2013.

Stephanie Fierce: It should be interesting to see Ryan's acting skills, I noticed you always had an eye for film and acting aside from music. Who says you can't do both? Also looking forward to Nadia and Arianna, both which understand film space and know how make it look good on camera based on music videos I've seen. Overall, love the story line, and something I will watch on a night where I seeks drama for entertainment

OOC: Really love the poster, it looks so realistic lol .

OPEN CASTING

In keeping true to the musicians turned acting project that most of the cast of Sweet Unknown have, producers have sent out an open casting call to recording artists who'd like to try their hand at acting themselves. Below is a list of casting roles up for audition, both as main cast and guest star roles.

Main Cast:

Lindsay Branch (recommended age; 19 - 25): Lindsay serves as Matthew Hendricks' personal assistant and best friend. She assists him in mostly every daily business and personal tasks he has. she is much like his right hand man, and one of the few people he trusts with everything of his. She's loyal, and almost entirely dedicated to her work, to a degree where she has little time for herself. Most of her dynamic in the show revolves around Hendricks' turmoils and trying to save him from himself.

Johnny Ware (recommended age: 22 - 27) - Ware takes on the role of Autumn's business partner in her fast rising drug dealing business in Hollywood. A once inspiring musician who falls through the cracks. Unlike Snow, Johnny can't help but have a heart in a business where you need to be heartless. While he's a savvy, smart young man, he finds it hard to grip into his new career.

Guest Stars:

(Two episodes)

Olivia Stewart (recommended age: 18 - 23) - A young teen actress who has quickly found fame, is taken under the wing of Emma Moore, where they share a mentor-protégé relationship. Her naivety, carefree nature proves to be a difficult task for Moore to handle, despite the teens' idolizing of the more experienced star.

(One episode)

Ashley Thompson (recommended age: 21 - 28) - One of Hendricks' top clients, Thompson proves to be one of the most difficult with her transition from singer to actress. She's a narcissistic, loudmouth, party girl, who is constantly getting herself into trouble.

Patrick Dawes (recommended age: N/A) - A steady actor with a constant proven record in television, who comes to Hendricks with a script idea for a movie, which fascinates film studios, but the problem ran into is his refusal to sell it without himself as the star.

(Cameo)

2 cameo roles available, any gender and age.

Casting Sheet

SWEET UNKNOWN TRAILER #1

The trailer opens with Matthew Hendricks shown in his office, his back to the camera as a wide shot is seen from a large window that overlooks the city of Los Angeles on a beautiful, clear skied day, which Hendricks is seemingly admiring himself. With a 180 turn, we get view of his luxurious office with various posters of films framed on the wall seen, before focusing on his assistant, Lindsay Branch, entering his office with a black skirt on, with a gray vest over a short sleeved button up shirt, which is cleverly buttoned down enough to show her cleavage.

Lindsay

Matt, you have a meeting with...

Matthew

[interrupting] I know, the little Disney star. Let's get this over with.

Lindsay

Do you even know her name?

Matthew

Trust me, I won't need to learn it. [chuckles]

Showing Lindsay again with a confused expression drawn upon her face, the camera shifts to show Matthew finally turning around, buttoning the jacket of his straight black suit, quickly exiting his office followed close behind by Lindsay.

Matthew

You've worked with me for five years but haven't once seen how I take care of business in a meeting. I invite you to stay for this one. Show you what it takes to be an agent.

Lindsay

What you do most of the day is talk to people and drink scotch. It's like you live in an episode of Mad Men

Matthew

Yes, but there's a difference between doing that in a lovely office in Hollywood Hills, and drinking wine out of a box in South Los Angeles.

He shoots her a confident smirk as they continue to walk, the scene jumps to where we see a young child, no older than ten years old, sitting in a chair far too big for her, her eyes showing some level of fear to them. The camera spans to show Matthew and Lindsay sitting across from her, Branch taking notes just as Hendricks starts to speak.

Matthew

Mommy and daddy won't be holding your hand when the going gets tough here. You have to make hard decisions, lose most of your friends because they just care about your money, sellout your own mother because she suddenly thinks you have to pay for her house, leave your pet dog behind because it's too needy. You have to be ruthless, if you are sensitive in this business they will eat you alive.

During the length of his rant to the girl, the camera bounces back and forth from Matthew and the child's reaction, by the end of it tears are streaming down her face and violently sobbing. The scene jumps ahead to show Matthew looking quite proud of himself with a wide smile, as he enters an elevator, leaving Lindsay to start just in front of the opened elevator doors.

Matthew

This is Hollywood baby, glitz and glamour! You don't like it?! Go fuck yourself.

Lindsay

You know you're going to hell, right?

Matthew

I'm already there, Linds!

We go straight through a quick view of Hollywood, with the famous sign in view, as it fast-forwards from day to night, with the cars quickly sweeping by and the lights becoming prominent in the evening as the camera zooms in to a particular area for the next scene.

[V.O.]

This is the city of vultures, honey.

A long sigh is heard over a black screen, an unknown male speaking to an unknown female.

Male

Are you ready?

Female

No, but let's do it.

In the following scene, Emma Moore is seen stepping out of a limo, to an obvious movie premiere as cameras quickly start to flash as everyone gets the first sight of her, in a white dress that just makes it past her thighs, but above her knees. The shot quickly jumps to show Emma posing for pictures on the red carpet, with a smile, in front of the many photographers, standing in front of a display of herself for a movie poster titled Midnight of Silence.

[V.O.]

A city that lives for the after parties.

A lively party is shown, thumping dance music playing with a large crowd dancing but the camera focuses on a booth where Emma are sitting in. Matt has a glass of whiskey in one hand while his other arm is draped over Emma's shoulder. Their lips are moving inaudible having a conversation before the sound kicks in midway into it.

Emma

Matt, baby, give me five minutes without bringing up more movies. This is a party for the movie I just starred in.

Matthew

I can't, Emma. Midnight of Silence, that was the big hit, the boom. The movie that's going to do 400 million worldwide. And we need to keep it up, have truck loads of money keep coming your way, baby.

Emma

Why can't I do Dead in the Water?

Matthew

An indie? Honey baby, you can't follow up a smash hit with an indie. Before you win an Oscar, everyone needs to know your name. It's the golden rule in Hollywood.

Emma

Have you even read the script for it?

Matthew

No, I haven't.

Emma

Read the script tonight, or else you're going home alone tonight.

Matthew

[laughs] That's bullshit, baby.

Emma

[whispers] I'll call you when I pull out the toy, that's as close as you're getting to my vagina tonight.

She smirks at him, raising the script from her side onto the table, placing it in front of him. Emma slides out of the booth, as Matt looks at her with a dazed expression.

Emma

Read the script.

As she walks away, his eyes follow her, shaking his head with a long sigh before taking a sip of his drink.

[V.O.]

Welcome to the sweet unknown.

We begin a quick sequence of scene jumps getting glimpses of each character and respective storylines that will be highlighted thus far this season.

Lindsay

Matt, you aren't my boyfriend or my husband. You need to stay out of my personal life.

Hendricks looks at her in disbelief, standing in a more casual look, obviously not in his office. Before we can hear his reaction the scene jumps again.

We see a large group of people gathered in a living room including Emma who's speaking with a few females who are sitting before her. Matthew is also in the room, standing off at a corner, looking disinterested while holding a red cup. The camera quickly shifts to show Olivia walking into the room, obviously not expecting this.

Olivia

Is this an intervention?

Emma

Olivia, just have a seat we'll...

Matthew

[interrupting] No, it's a birthday party for an eleven year old. That's why I'm drinking fruit punch instead of single malt.

Everyone's attention shifts from Olivia, to Matthew as he spoke. He scratches his head, lowering his sunglasses back down to cover his eyes.

Matthew

Yeah, this an intervention. Sorry if you're an alcoholic or drug addict or whatever. At least you're pretty.

He staggers back a few steps as everyone keeps looking at him, before exiting the room.

Another scene jump occurs as we see an obviously nervous Michael Ware rushing down a flight of stairs, cursing under his breath.

Michael

Fuck, fuck, fuck, fuck. Autumn is going to literally kill me.

As he finally reaches the final step, he rushes to open the door, we see a cloudy, rainy day view of New York City, obvious from the Statue of Liberty seen in the distance.

Autumn is shown with her bare back on display, sitting in a bed as an unknown male steps into the frame, buckling his pants while shirtless. She turns her head to look at him, bringing a marijuana joint to her lips as she inhales it before exhaling it out in circles.

Emma is seen wearing a cut-off shirt exposing her bare stomach and denim shorts, with a smirk on her face as she steps into a room, Matthew coming into the frame as he lifts her off her feet, her legs wrapping themselves around his waist as he pins her against the wall. He begins to eagerly kiss along her neck, her head back against the wall as he hands run through his hair, a moan of pleasure exiting her lips as we see his hand slip into her shorts.

With another quick scene jump, Lindsay is shown talking on the phone, obviously trying to be discreet as loud music is heard in the background. It looks like she's located in a quiet hallway of a club or bar.

Lindsay

I have a responsibility here, I have an actual job. I can't just drop everything and leave because she's in the hospital.

Matthew is seen anxiously pacing around his office, looking down at his desk for the phone to ring. After a few seconds it does, quickly pressing a button to talk on speaker phone with whoever the other person is.

Matthew

Give me some good news, motherfucker.

Another scene jumps shows us Autumn in what is obvious a pot growing area, she's propped up on a table with short dress on that shows off her long legs. Mike is seen walking to her with a leather jacket on and a handful of already wrapped up, marijuana.

Autumn

Focus, Mike. You just delivery it, get the money, and leave. I don't care if Kate Upton is at this party and begging you to fuck her tits. You're gonna get paid and get back here. Now go, you're on the clock.

Michael

This isn't my first deal, Autumn, don't worry.

Autumn

That's easier said than done. This is a beach party, lots of ass roaming. You need to focus at what's at hand. I don't mean cupping a handful either.

Olivia is now seen in a bikini and a pair of sneakers, putting a robe over herself as she settled in her trailer, just before a knock is heard on the door before it swings open, not waiting for a response. Matthew steps into her trailer with a grin.

Matthew

Olivia, how's my second favorite client doing today?

Olivia

I just filmed a scene where I had to do coke off another woman's breasts.

Matthew

So I take it you've had a good day. That's my perfect Tuesday afternoon.

Olivia

I've had worse days, yes.

Emma is seen at a photoshoot by the ocean, posing seductively for the camera in only a white tank top and black bikini bottoms.

Matthew and Autumn are shown at a bar, each downing tequila shots.

Autumn

Have you done anything with this Moore girl you didn't do with me?

Matthew

What are you talking about? Like sexually? She does let me fuck her in the ass.

Seemingly later that same night, Autumn and Matthew are shown together again, sleeping soundly in bed,as she rests her head on his bare chest.

The next scene we see Emma storm into living room area of what could be assumed as Matt's home, obviously furious about something as she sees Autumn in the kitchen area making breakfast with a long-sleeved, oversized for her, male shirt on.

Emma

Oh, you fucking slut!

In the final shot of the trailer, we see a scene with the six main characters together in the same area for the first time, but not necessarily there as one group, at an obvious party in an upscale Hollywood Hill home.

Autumn is shown making a drug deal with an unknown male in a suit, discreetly sliding a small bag of marijuana into his jacket as she slides the money he handed her into her small purse.

Michael is seen in the bar area of the party, drinking a beer as he watches on from a distance at Autumn successfully make the exchange, getting a nod from her before he starts walking the opposite direction. The camera follows him before he bumps into Lindsay, both exchanging apologizes before continuing to go their respective ways.

The camera now follows Lindsay, holding her cell phone in her hand before it starts vibrating with an incoming call, hitting ignore as she tosses it into her. She reaches the bar, inaudibly asking for a drink as the bartender takes her order.

Olivia swiftly passes by her, not noticing her as she is obviously more concerned with looking for someone, two drinks in hand, seemingly one for someone else, perhaps for the person she's looking for. Unbeknown to her with her constant moving, one of the drinks spill slightly from the glass. The camera focus on the spill of alcohol on the floor for a short moment before someone steps on it.

The camera pans up to the male figure fully, now we see Matthew dressed casually with a denim jacket thrown on. He is shown with his phone up to his ear, making a call but with no answer on the other line.

The last character we see as the camera jumps to a different area of the party is Emma, who's focusing on something she's reading on her iPhone. Her attention is driven away from it as someone offers her a drink which she accepts, taking a sip of it.

We get a quick fade to black with that, the screen staying as such for four seconds before we see in bold print.

OOC: SWEET UNKNOWN SOUNDTRACK

This is a request post for the compilation of songs that will appear on the Sweet Unknown soundtrack. Bands and artists from all genres are welcomed to submit any song they like. Even if your character is on the show, he or she is allowed to have a song on the soundtrack. They must be original songs, written for the purpose of being used in the soundtrack. I hope for it to include anywhere between 14 and 20 songs, but the number can easily be altered if there is enough demand.

If you have an artist who you'd like to partake in the soundtrack, send me a PM as soon as possible so I can reserve a spot on the track listing for you. Although if by April 15th, you have not sent your song in, you'll lose the spot to someone else.

Genres: alternative, blues, country, folk, hip-hop, indie, pop, R&B, rock (all include any sub-genres)

Song themes: escapism, fame, heartache, introspection, loneliness, love, regret, sex, seduction, yearning

To request a song spot, all you need to tell me is which of your artists you'll be writing for. There is a limit of two songs per person, and one per character.

When you're fully done with your song, there is a template to follow, which I will post below in spoilers.

OOC: I'm bumping this thread up, since I still need more submissions for the soundtrack. Everyone who may be interested should remember that you don't need to send me the song the moment you PM me to express your interest in writing a song for the project. The deadline is April 15th for all song submissions.

OOC: Another bump to remind everyone who has agreed to writing a song for the soundtrack, that I need it sent to me by April 15th. I've only received a few songs thus far, and I thank those who have. If you need a little bit of additional time, let me know. But I would like all the songs sent to me by the end of next week at the latest, so I can announce it and reveal the first single.

OOC #2: I've received PMs with questions if there are any other spots for the show this season, be it for guest roles or cameos, and the answer is no. I'm about halfway through writing the first season and already have notes written out up until the season finale, so for this season no other characters are needed.

Sweet Unknown – Press Junket (Day One)
UserPostedImageUserPostedImage

On Friday, Sweet Unknown hosted its first press junket for the media to get further insight of the highly anticipated television series. The event hosted in New York City, New York, gave interviewers the chance to preview the first hour of the scheduled two-hour pilot episode of the show, premiering June 2nd on FX. Confirmed at the event was the show’s premiere date being pushed back a week, in a effort the network executives believe it gives more promotional opportunity for the cast to hype the show before its initial start.

The promotional schedule began today and it’s hitting the ground running. With the release of GirlSpice’s “Kiss Me”, last week taken from Sweet Unknown’s upcoming soundtrack, the song not only serves as the first taste from the girl group in nearly two years, in addition, it’s the first single off said soundtrack. Hernandez confirmed to the press that the show’s first season soundtrack will be released exclusively through North Hill Records, worldwide. The executives were praising last weekend’s appearance of GirlSpice on Saturday Night Live as the musical guests, specifically talking about Nadia Berry in-depth role in the show, both on and off screen, as well as Chantal Hayes guest arc later in the season.

The event featured the creator, lead writer, one of the executive producers, and stars of the show, Ryan Ross Hernandez, as well as fellow star and soundtrack contributor Arianna Harley. Inside a room specifically designed for the streamline of interviewers, Hernandez sat with professional lightening and cameras on him as he took every question thrown his way with each new press member, multiple times told from behind the camera by his publicist to speed up his answers, due to the singer-songwriter/actor’s obvious long-winded tendencies. Below is a video, just one of the many posted around the web today and more to be seen in the coming days, of Hernandez speaking candidly on the show with E! News contributing correspondent, Ryan Seacrest.

Ryan Seacrest: I must admit I was surprised when they told me you were doing press for Sweet Unknown. It seemed to me at least as if you were uncomfortable with doing interviews.

Ryan Ross Hernandez: Oh, I’m still very uncomfortable doing interviews. But it’s tough to say no when you’ve created the show and have a role in front of the camera as well. Other actors on the show will be doing press later, so hopefully this means I won’t have to talk as much.

Seacrest: Well today you and Arianna Harley are the only ones here doing press for the show, was that a decision already made that you and her were going to start off the press for the show?

RRH: It was discussed; we’ve had meetings in the past two months or so, seeing what we were going to do with the promotional handling of the show. It’s different than most television series since each of the main actors, their full-time careers are as musicians, first and foremost. So it’s very tough when that’s the case, plus having an ensemble made up of six actors, it makes it difficult to get us all in the same room to promote.

Seacrest: It makes sense, it makes sense. At least we have you here today, talking about Sweet Unknown, which we’ve seen a trailer, we’ve read about it, but today was the first time the reporters in the room were able to see a hour preview of the pilot for the show. I must say, being in that room watching, I thought it was fantastic.

RRH: Thank you. We worked fairly hard on the pilot, as on every episode, but I think we knew filming the pilot, that it meant that much more than any other episode, because it was going to be the first taste everyone would get of the show and base their decision on continuing to watch it or not, on that one episode. We felt the pressure and duty really with anyone taking their time to watch, that for that hour it would draw you in.

Seacrest: I think it accomplishes that goal. Your character, Matthew Hendricks, is definitely an interesting one.

RRH: [chuckles] That’s one way to put him, yes.

Seacrest: I wrote down some of the things he does during this first hour of the show that I’m not sure if I can say, but I feel people are still going to want to see this for themselves. He makes a little girl cry, he inappropriately flirts with his secretary, he engages in some quite raunchy sexual activity with a client during a business meeting. After seeing all of this, how would you describe him?

RRH: A lot of fucking fun, I’ll say that much. [chuckles] You know, when I say no character is either good or bad, I mean it. There isn’t any character where the audience watching the show has to feel the need to cheer that “hero” on, and then hate on the “ villain.” It’s not that kind of show. Each character does certain things that are good human acts, and some that aren’t. Matthew Hendricks, to me personally, is an introspective character. He could do terrible things, which he does, he certain goes through great lengths to get what he wants, be it if it hurts or affects other people. As a business person that’s the kind of attitude he has, he’s a vulture. But as a human being, people get the chance to maybe see a scene where he’s being very caring and loving to someone and think, “You know, he might be a dick when the suit is on, but behind it, he seems like a guy I want to have a beer with or something.”

Seacrest: Do you think with the general audience, that your character will be liked?

RRH: That very much depends on the viewer. It depends on the viewer’s personality, like that scene you spoke of about him making this little girl cry in a business meeting, that’s very much suppose to be a comedic scene. Some could call it dark comedy, but it’s really supposed to be taken as such. This character does bring a lot of humor to the table, but a certain kind of witty humor. I felt that the show needed that side of a smart comedy, which most of my favorite comedies have that attribute to them and I love that.

Seacrest: There is comedy to the show; I saw that in the preview without a doubt. I think most of the comedy in that hour was found with the interactions between your character and Arianna Harley’s character Autumn Snow.

RRH: Yeah, that pairing between my character and Arianna’s is a lot of fun. It’s explored a lot in the first season of the show. I believe in that first hour that you guys were able to see, you catch a quite humorous scene of us partaking in some marijuana smoking together. That was a fun scene to shoot.

Seacrest: Well it looked very fun as well. You guys weren’t really high, right? [laughs]

RRH: [chuckles] Unfortunately, no. We weren’t allowed to partake in any actual pot smoking on set.

Seacrest: An attribute though that I could connect between your character and you as a person, is that both of you are fond of single-malt scotch.

RRH: That’s correct, yeah. I can’t or at least I’m not allowed to drink as much scotch as I use to. After having a granuloma in my throat, then undergoing surgery, and then having botox injected through my neck into my throat. All that just kind of means I need to be really careful with what I put into my body that can affect my vocal chords.

Seacrest: I’ve heard about that, it’s good to have you back being able to speak and sing again. I heard you were silent for quite a few months there.

RRH: Yeah, I was silent on and off from pretty much September or October, into early January. I only started to use my voice more to its capabilities, just speaking wise, when we started filming Sweet Unknown. You can’t exactly film a show when you’re voice is limited to whispering or your vocal chords frozen that you can’t even make a noise if you wanted to.

Seacrest: That must have been a very frustrating time for you.

RRH: It was a period of my life that lasted way too long, and now I’m just ready to get out of it and move to the next phase in my life as both a musician and just a guy who’s 35 years old.

Seacrest: Does Sweet Unknown play a part in that next phase?

RRH: I’m not sure. I guess we’ll see if the first season is successful and lucky enough to be renewed for a second season, maybe it will. I wrote most of it during the time I was quiet, we actually had our final writers meeting last week where we wrapped up writing the season finale which we’re filming next month, so it hasn’t been a part of this next phase yet, but maybe it will be.

Seacrest: How many episodes does this season include?

RRH: Thirteen, the pilot counts as two episodes since its two hours.

Seacrest: Before we started this interview, your publicist, very nicely I must add, asked me to not ask you any questions about your personal life. I’m not gonna ask you about your personal life, but I will ask you about your fellow cast member, Nadia Berry.

RRH: [laughs] I see what you did there, Seacrest.

Seacrest: I just want to ask you how it’s been working with Nadia Berry on Sweet Unknown. Is there a special chemistry there?

RRH: [chuckles] It’s been fun working with Nadia.

Seacrest: She was just starring in Scary Movie 5, have you seen it?

RRH: No, no I haven’t. But I’m sure it’s funny. She’s a fun girl.

Seacrest: She is a fun girl, I’ve seen it and it’s really funny. Have you spent a lot of time with her on or around set?

RRH: No, actually. [chuckles] I think I may have been hanging out with Arianna and Isabel more so than, Nadia.

Seacrest: Well I have another question related to the leading ladies of the show. There is a great cast there of young, talented young ladies…

RRH: Then there’s Issac Lovelock and I. [laughs]

Seacrest: [chuckles] Yes, of course. But the girls on the show definitely play a major part of the show. You have a cast of Nadia Berry, Isabel Mejores, Arianna Harley, and Cristina Lake.

RRH: All four girls play a major part. I feel like sometimes the show is just so much more focused on them. They all play a part in most of the storylines within the show. I know what’s been showcased so far might be the pairings. You have my character and Emma Moore, Nadia’s character. My character and Arianna Harley’s character have a dynamic there, as you said before, that’s really fun. Nadia Berry’s character and Isabel’s have that kind of mentor-mentee connection there. Lovelock is a business partner with Arianna Harley’s character in the whole drug dealing business. Cristina Lake and my character have quite a few scenes together.

Seacrest: Maybe I’m making the wrong assumption here, but after watching an hour of the show, I get the feeling that your character ends up, at point or another, hooking up with all the leading ladies in the show.

RRH: [laughs] Does it really come off like that?

Seacrest: I’m just basing my opinion on what I see. Your character seems to be close with all four women in extent or another.

RRH: But that doesn’t necessarily mean my character ends up having sexual intercourse with them all, right?

Seacrest: Maybe not, I’m just asking you.

RRH: I’ll just say that my character, does know how to charm. He has a way with women that usually end up with him getting what he wants, whether that’s sexual or otherwise.

Seacrest: That reminds me of, at least in the charming, of someone I know.

RRH: Just stop right there, Seacrest. [chuckles]

Seacrest: Alright, let’s talk a little about the soundtrack before we wrap this up. The soundtrack features some pretty big names in music, but the most intriguing song in my opinion is the song you did with Arianna of Hey Lolita, and obviously fellow co-star.

RRH: I might be bias because I’m on that song, but Arianna has one of those voices in music that sticks with you. And you don’t get too many Arianna Harley’s every decade, so I see her being around for a really long time. It was an honor to work with her and compose that song together. I really think something just clicked and our chemistry matched as musicians in the studio. I’d love to work with her again in the future. She's a lovely person. Have you met her yet?

Seacrest: No, I haven't yet, but after this interview I do hope to speak with her too.

RRH: You're gonna like her, she's a cool girl.

Seacrest: Now your publicist is cuing us to end this interview. One last question that I want to ask you though.

RRH: Go ahead, I'll be here all day anyways, I don't care.

Seacrest: There is obviously a lot riding on your back for Sweet Unknown to be a success. You created it, you're starring in it, you're a writer for it, producer, a subdivision was created within your record label to fund some the production costs for this series. Do you feel any pressure at all for this show being a success and being watched on a weekly basis by audiences?

RRH: Personally I don't feel any pressure, because this isn't my day job. It's not what I do on a daily basis. I've invested a lot of time and effort and financials for this project to get off the ground and running. But to say that I feel pressure to have this show be a success would be inaccurate. I consider this a hobby, a really expensive hobby, and a hobby that many people on this show even, behind the scenes and in front, consider their day jobs. So obviously I would like to see this show go on and do well enough that everyone can return for a season two next year, but I won't be bashing my head in thinking what I could have done to make it better if we don't get renewed. I feel confident that we're already putting out the best, and most entertaining program we can. After we film the season finale next week, I hope everyone involved in Sweet Unknown, will go home with the same sense that I will. We each made the greatest individual efforts with whatever our task was. After next week, it's up to the viewers to decide whether they like it or not. Whether it was one of the many actors and actresses you see on screen, or the producers, or the cameramen, or any other personnel on set, everyone did a fantastic job with what they had in their hands. We'll see in a few months what happens, but for now, I think I speak for all of those amazing people that worked on the show, we just want to have it premiere already.

Seacrest: Ryan, thank you for the time, it's always a pleasure to speak with you. Best of luck with the show, upcoming tour, and any other project you might be plotting in your head already.

RRH: No problem, thank you.
