Artist: Tisha Jackson Song: M.I.A. Album: The Highway To Redemption Written by: Tisha Jackson Produced by: Tisha Jackson Recorded: October 2012 Label: Hit-Factory Productions / Tric-Jam / Studio 60 Genre: R&B Length: 4:50
Background & Vocal Arrangements of ‘M.I.A.’
M.I.A. is a moody number from beginning to end. ‘M.I.A.’ is a response to all the negative and false stories surrounding Jackson’s name in recent years. She addresses a number of things in the song from failed relationships, to her issues regarding the music industry, and the false stories created by tabloids involving and use to profit off of her name. The introduction of the song is one that is unique and rare. Instead of the blasting of instruments typically done in introductions, Jackson opts to sing the background arrangement and keys of the song. She begins to hum the keys with the infectious hum beginning with, ‘Bummmmmmmp, Bummmmmmp, Bummmmmmp’. Jackson voice is very distinctive in the introduction and she hums with a rasp in her voice like no one has heard in her previous recordings. After the background arrangements are finished, Jackson sounds refreshed and energized when she screams ‘Woooooooooooo!’ Hitting a high note in the mid-section. Then the piano keys and horns begin to mimic the exact arrangement Tisha sings Acapella. There are noting but live instruments being played now and drums are introduced to the beat as the horns and piano keys are being played.
Tisha then begins to sing the first verse. A natural alto, Jackson voice is as raspy as we’ve ever heard her. Her approach to the first verse is very rough and she delivers in a tough way. Jackson’s vocals are as hard as the bass line of the track now, filled with horns, piano keys, and drums. Jackson uses Ebonics in a lot of the first verse as she addresses her nay sayers. Jackson declares being young, wild, and free in the first verse. She also talks about being liberated as a woman, it is evident in her voice, vocal delivery, and vocal technique. The bass line drowns a little as Jackson voice drowns with it towards the end of the verse. Jackson then begins to use the same vocal technique on the hook/pre-chorus of the track.
In the chorus the bass line and beat picks up. Jackson begins to yell, “Go M.I.A.” which is the main hook of the chorus. She begins to murmur sarcastically in the background “Hit the bricks”, “Hit the road”. Towards the end of the chorus Jackson begins to ad-lib. In the second verse of the song, Jackson uses the similar technique and approach she did in first verse. The bass line and beat kicks in and she sings roughly at the same pace. In the second verse Jackson gets more personal and begins to talk about what is evident to be a failed relationship. Jackson then begins to sing the hook/pre-chorus and then heads to the chorus. The keys change and the beat goes harder.
Jackson then enters the bridge of the song. Typically the bridge is used to slow down the song and bridge the verses together. The change of pace usually slows down, however Jackson uses the bridge of ‘M.I.A.’ to speed up the track, as the bass line goes harder and now she is harmonizing along with the bass line, consisting of horns, piano keys, and drums. The same vocal delivery she gives in the Introduction she gives in the bridge and begins to harmonize with the beat humming. So you hear her aggressively humming ‘Baaa-Baaa-Badummm - Baaa-Baaa-Badummm’. Jackson then heads to the pre-chorus/hook of the track and heads to the chorus.
The outro then kicks in and the beat becomes infectiously louder and breaks down the song. Jackson then begins to sing sarcastic remarks regarding her nay sayers. Singing lines like, “I told you, you’d need me one day”, and “Take all that you have to give and shove it.” The track ends with a big BANG! Boom!
Background of ‘M.I.A.’/ [How It Came About]
M.I.A. was recorded in October of 2012 in New York City. It was right before Jackson checked herself into a rehabilitation center. At that time Jackson’s name was in the press for a lot of things, regarding scuffles she’s had, rumors about her personal life with then boyfriend Dominic Brown. And Jackson used all of that negativity to respond to it in ‘M.I.A.’. Little did she know that the song would eventually take on a life of its own with the recent false stories and defamation of character regarding her name in tabloids recently. M.I.A. can be considered quite a controversial and personal track with the drama regarding Jackson and her ex boyfriend, Dominic Brown, or the alleged behind the scene scuffles with Star Factory judges. Jackson addresses it all without sounding bitter on the track. Instead she chooses to look at the false stories printed by tabloids as a phase of life and proudly announces herself as a liberated woman. Jackson vocal delivery is very strong on the track as well. It is her most rough and extravagant vocal delivery as of yet and she proves that she not only sings but studies in regards to her voice as well, Using many different techniques to compliment her lower and upper registers as well. Normally her tone is very low but she sings most of the song with her mid register of the song. You also get the sense of Jackson stepping into her womanhood and knowing and learning about herself as a woman, that is evident as she refers to herself as "Miss Jackson" in the song. All in all, Tisha doesn’t give a damn what you say about her! And she proves it right here in this record.”
Tisha’s comments on ‘M.I.A.’
Quote:“I wrote ‘M.I.A.’ because there have been a lot of things that have been said about me in the last year specifically that I wanted to address. Some of what has been said about is true and some isn’t. But for the most part these stories printed of me are false. And I didn’t want to become a prisoner of that. So I wrote M.I.A. as not a response to false rumors about me, but as a declaration to myself. A declaration to be my own woman. And to always know my values. They can say what they want about me, but I know the truth at the end of the day. M.I.A. is like a blackout of all negativity and its me being unafraid to say, “Shut the fuck up, and get your lying asses away from me!”
"M.I.A."
