Lyrica Ocha is/was 1/5th of the formerly popular ‘girls band’ G2L, or Girls 2 Ladies. The group, while popular, ultimately died out after several newcomers including Weekend, took the group dynamic by storm and completely raided their fanbase. Ironically Lyrica manages Weekend, so in a way, she was the harbringer of the group’s doom.
After about a year or so of inactivity, Lyrica looks to rise above her status as “The Redhead” of her old group’s decaying carcass, and become her own pop-star. There may be hope for her yet.
Love Thriller could be described as a female’s version of Rick Astley’s classic, and there’s nothing wrong with that. The industry has been facing a recent derth of Synth Pop, and Lyrica + the outstanding production by Will.Rocca hope to reinvigorate the dusty 80’s genre.
Although the song is lyrically average, the vocal ability on display here is downright remarkable. In 2011, the G2L website described Lyrica as, “the party girl”, and this song seems to be a deconstruction of that on many levels. Yes the synth-rock feel could give off the illusion that this is just another shallow club-banger, but underneath that, there’s some real substance here.
My biggest tip to Lyrica is to really work on song-writing. She has the vocal-ability to fight in the big leagues and Rocca’s production is quite fine but the lyrics drag the rest of the song down. Why be Kaskade or DeadMau5 when you can be Kraftwerk?
Pros:
- Great vocal ability.
- Awesome production.
- Dat Synth.
Cons:
tl/dr: No hype, no backing, no problem. Don’t sleep on this girl, she might have legs.
5 - Part of a new musical revolution, I loved it and it might make my Top 10 of the year.
4 - Nice, solid effort. Gonna be something that I have no qualms about putting on repeat.
