Angie: What’s up NYC? You’re listening to the Angie Martinez show, we have a special guest in the building today. Her seventh album, ‘The Highway To Redemption’ was released yesterday. She is one of the most recognizable women in the world. And she is Brooklyn’s own, born and breed. What’s up Tisha Jackson!

Tisha: Heeeeyy Angie! What up chica?!

Angie: How are you?!

Tisha: I am doing great. Album in stores. I am a very busy woman this week.

Angie: Yes you are! We all saw your Oprah interview. I liked it personally, but I was a little sour, I’m like, how come Tisha didn’t come to me first [Angie jokes]

Tisha: Ohhh Angie don’t play! [Tisha laughs] That interview was taped about two weeks ago. You my first live stop boo. I’m in yo studio ain’t I?? [Tisha jokes]

Angie: No, I kid, I kid! So album number seven. How does it feel to be on album number seven?

Tisha: I feel like I am on a natural high, you know? I love what I do, and this album just made me realize I really wouldn’t be happy doing anything else but entertaining. And this is what I was born to do. Creatively I’m just in a space where I feel untouchable. This album has put me in a really good space. And I’m just excited you know?

Angie: When you were that cute, innocent, little sixteen year old girl debuting to the scene, did you think that seven years later, you’d be on album number seven? And be considered what many call the “Princess of Pop”?

Tisha: Oh God no! I remember being this insecure little sixteen year old girl who could write songs but I was just so scared. You have to realize when I came out in ’06 there I was a part of the “new wave” of up and comers. You had GirlSpice, myself, and a whole lot of other young ladies who were making there debuts. And there were days when I would be in the studio and say, “I don’t sing as well as that one, or I can’t dance as well as that one.” Not getting into specific names. But little did I know when I got some confidence in myself that I could beat them at their own game, because I worked hard to understand myself so when I sing I am confident. I worked hard to understand the art of dancing. So I got it now boo!

Angie: Now you produced all of the songs, with the exception of one, produced by X-Rocka, on the album. Was that difficult? Did it take longer?

Tisha: It wasn’t difficult, because I knew what I wanted to say, I knew what I wanted my album to sound like, I knew it would be a whole other direction for me, and I knew which direction I wanted to head in. It did take longer though, because I didn’t really have any other producers or writers to lean on. The only people I did have to lean on were my band members, and if it weren’t for them, I wouldn’t be in your studio, talking to you on your show today. They helped make all of this possible. I’m thankful for them.

Angie: I’ve noticed on the album, a lot of the song uses live instruments. That’s a bit of a risk don’t you think, being that most musical is so technical now?

Tisha: I completely agree with you. I do think that It’s a risk but you can’t deny live instruments make some of the best music. Don’t get me wrong I have nothing against techno, or computerized beats. But going live is where it’s at. When you listen to Stevie Wonder, Michael Jackson, or Janet Jackson’s ‘Control’ album, you see they used live instruments to combine different sounds together and that’s what makes you want to move, and feel inspired. I just wanted make music that would inspire people when they listened to it. And in return be inspired by that music, as I was when I was a child.

Angie: I listened to the album, and I loved it. I will say this is the greatest R&B/Pop record I’ve heard in years. And I will go on to say I think it will be your biggest yet. My favorite tracks are ’13 Bonnie & Clyde’ and ‘Kiss My Ass’. What are your favorite joints off the album?

Tisha:
Uggghhh! That’s kind of hard Angie, it’s like asking me to choose a favorite child. But I will say that one of my favorites would have to be ‘God I Need Your Help Now’, ‘The Highway to be ‘God I Need Your Help Now’, ‘The Highway to Redemption [The Song] and ‘Good Lovin’.

Angie: Why those tracks?

Tisha: Because they are the most personal, and the ones I had fun making. I think people will relate to those tracks most. ‘God I Need Your Help Now’ is a Gospel song. It was the first I recorded since ’08 I believe. It’s not as “churchy” as it sounds. I am a religious woman, but I am not a fanatic. And it’s just a love letter I wrote to God, asking him for his help and hand, and him being a constant stay and guide in my life. I think it’s going to be huge on the Gospel, R&B, and Pop circuits because it’s just a very genuine song that I’m singing to God. I wrote it for myself and people in need. And ‘Good Lovin’ the beat is just sick! That was one of the most fun experiences I had in the studio with my band. And honestly ‘The High Way To Redemption’ would have to be my fav track of the album because it’s a beautiful song. It’s just about friendship and love. And loving and cherishing your loved ones, and how they are there for you when the going gets tough and you are there for them. Definitely one of my favorite songs of my career thus far. And it’s so soulful!

Angie: What is the next single off the album? There has already been a little buzz, but do you want to confirm anything?

Tisha: Yes, sure! The next single is going to be ‘Good Lovin’. I hope to have it out as a single sometime in May. But I don’t know because I have to do a video this weekend! We are shooting the video for M.I.A. so hopefully right after that we start the treatment for ‘Good Lovin’.

Angie: How was it working with Atlas and Chloe?

Tisha: Atlas is going to be great I think. He’s a little reserved, and I think that is what his fans and those who haven’t heard his material yet will love from him, because he is so damn mysterious. Like, you’ll sit with him and wonder what he is thinking inside his head right now. And Chle is my girl, she’s out here doing her thing, I am proud of her. She’s like my little sister you know?

Angie: You’ve been friendly with Ramon Omari lately. Why didn’t you put him on the record? [Angie blushes]

Tisha: [Giggles] Angie don’t start! But, no, we were so busy. We did have time to hang out, and we talked about doing something together, but our schedules were so busy we never found time to get into the studio together. But I think he is the greatest rapper out right now, point blank, period. He is a musical genius.

Angie: Woooaah! You reppin kinda hard for him Tisha!

Tisha: [Laughs loudly] Awwww, Angie don’t even try it! I know what you’re up to. It’s not even like that.

Angie: Nah, I’m just messing around. It was great having you come by. You always welcome to come, we at Hot 97 love you. This my girl, Tisha Jackson ya’ll.

Tisha: Awwwww, thank you Angie! You know before we go! I just want to thank you and everyone at Hot 97! You have always been good to me Angie! And you know I don’t do radio interviews that much anymore, because the men will disrespect you as a female, and the women would shade you. And you have always been good to me, BUT KEPT it real. And I love you and everyone at Hot 97! Ya’ll my peoples.

OOC: Great interview. I'm always impressed by how real you can make your's. :)

Alec: Even if the album is shit, I'd probably still give her a good score for being so goddamn attractive. Call me a nice guy, or whatever, but it's what I do. ;)
