Meet the Bands - Number One - Escape Artists Never Die
Interview with the band's Zac Hale

UserPostedImage
L-R: Gio Silva (lead guitar, screams), Ethan Hale (drums), Zac Hale (guitar, clean vocals), Aiden York (bass).

Information

Band Name - Escape Artists Never Die
From - San Francisco, CA
Genre - Post hardcore/metalcore
Years Active - 2010 - Present
Members - Zac Hale, Ethan Hale, Aiden York, Gio Silva

We're here with Zac Hale. So tell us, who are you guys?

Hey! This is Zac from Escape Artists Never Die. We hail from San Francisco, California, and we're here to show the world what California already knows - that we are one of the most exciting prospects in the world with the will to make it all the way to the top.

How was the band formed?

Originally, EAND was formed by my older brother Ethan and his buddy Gio. They had been friends in high school, and they formed the band with Aiden, who had been in the class above them. They tried for a while to find a singer, and I was all 'hey pick me! Pick me!' It took a while for them to see me as anything more than just Ethan's little brother though - but eventually they allowed me to join. That was three years ago now, and I feel I've grown up with the band.

How would you describe your sound to anyone who has never heard you?

Exciting. We do something that's a little bit of post-hardcore, mixed with metalcore. It's a bit of a challenge to listeners at times. We change pace and direction in songs quite a lot, and this keeps listeners on their toes. It makes it interesting in my eyes though. We have high energy in our songs, we like to make a lot of noise with our guitars, and we like to have fun. Fun has always been the buzzword for Escape Artists. We take chances, we throw caution to the wind and we just enjoy ourselves. At the end of the day, not many people can say that about their job, so we feel lucky that we have the chance to do that now.

Your audition tape claimed that you bring something different to the table lyrically, how so?

Oh wow, I hoped this would come up. Well ummmm, I like to experiment. Haha, like you know, a lot of people get stuck in a rut of some form of belief that music has to be all about love. We see it a lot in pop music, and it makes sense - I mean what else hits you quite as hard as love, be it good or bad right? I try to let everything and anything influence me though. That is literally anything from the wind, to a visit to a shop, and a phase I went through where I was drawing lyrical influence from...you know those RL Stine books; Goosebumps? Yeah, those. I like to have fun with my lyrics and write something that people will remember for all the right reasons. If I sing something and it makes someone smile, then it's a success, right?

What would you say is your trademark?

As a band, I would say we have two things that we like to think makes us stand out. The first is our vocal contrast in most of our songs. I'm lead vocalist, and my voice is more inclined towards pop-punk than metal or any other sort of heavy rock genres. That stands up against Gio's voice, which is very screamy and shouty and "raaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaah!" you know? It gives us something that people always say makes us stand out from anything else out there. I like that. Our other trademark is our live energy. We've played a lot of home town shows, and anyone will tell you that they never go home dry. Everyone leaves that venue drenched in sweat. I'm one of those frontmen who's like calling for circle pits and getting everyone jumping all the time. I like audience participation, so get ready for that if you ever come to see us.

To date, how successful has your band been?

We've had relative success so far on a local scale. We get on Bay Area radio sometimes, and we get a lot of friends coming to the shows we play back home in San Fran. Outside our hometown and San Diego though, we've gotten nowhere. In terms of releases, we've had a debut EP called "Impending Nothing", and another one called "The Goosebumps EP". Up until now, we've had a lot of fun, without any sort of success on a global scale, but that's cool.

So what made you want to enter the Chaos Basement Jam contest?

Well, as I say, we were just four guys having fun up until this point, but there came a time when we wanted it to be more than that. I'm 19, the other guys are 21 and 22, so we felt now was the right time to try and make something of it. Not many dudes around the world get the chance to do something they love to pay the bills, so if we can earn enough from doing what we enjoy every day of our lives, then that's more than a dream come true. When we heard this competition was open, we thought it was the perfect thing for us to go for. It gave us a pop at getting somewhere in our career, as well as letting us know what the world thought of our music. To say we were pleasantly surprised is a massive understatement.

And how did it feel when you found out you won?

Dude, fuck, I'm still a little hungover today, I won't lie. We got that phone call yesterday morning, and I answered it. I looked at my brother and I was like "Dude.....dude we fucking won!" I sounded like a little five year old girl who found Justin Bieber under the tree on Christmas morning. I was just screaming and leaping around the room. I mean, sure we entered, and we always hoped we'd be in with a chance. But so many top top bands entered as well, and we never allowed ourselves to truly believe this was a possibility. It is still blowing my mind right now. I'm not sure it's sunk in yet. We had a big party yesterday though out at our pool, and that was awesome. There was a lot of beer and food, and then a hell of a lot of tears later in the night. It was awesome.

Looking forward, what are your big strengths and weaknesses headed into a pro career?

They're probably both the same; our confidence. On one hand, being confident in what we do has always spurned us to be risky and try new things. In a way I think that's what allowed us to stand out enough to win this contest. It's what I feel will continue to allow us to innovate and grow as a band. We don't have to worry about being dynamic. It's what we love and what we have the confidence to do. On the other hand though, there are always people who hate confidence. If you're too sure of yourself, someone will always try to shoot you down. We'll deal with that if and when we come to that though. One thing we don't want to ever be doing is changing who we are. We are having fun, and we are loving what we do and we don't ever want that to change.

And in the immediate future, what are you looking forward to most as a band?

Definitely the tour. We have a lot of music out there, and obviously the chance to make a new album will be awesome. But the opportunity to tour the globe and meet all sorts of rock fans is fucking insane to me. I get to travel the world and head out on so many stages. I wanna meet all the fans and play my heart out every night. It will be the most awesome awesome months of all our lives. We are very very excited.

Well that concludes the whole band questions. Now quickfire questions to get to know you, Zac Hale!

Hahaha awesome! Shoot!

Favourite band?

Funeral for a Friend, for sure.

Your first kiss?

I was aged like...11...her name was Sophia. She lives across the street from my parents still.

First memory?

I fell off a little trike thing when I was three. Ethan was pushing me down the street on it. I guess he misjudged how fast a little kids' bike could go. My face gave him the answer though.

Biggest hero in music?

Amy Meyer. I love how that girl brought rock music right into the mainstream. No one's ever brought anything truly alternative to the fore quite like that girl.

Biggest celebrity crush?

Haha! I wondered if this would come up. I like girls who are a real challenge. I met that Aimee Christelle chick two years ago when she was here for a show, and I have to say that Pixie girl has some sort of awesome sexiness about her weirdness.

Favourite drink?

I like a good old fashioned beer. Coupled with weed, there's nothing better. Cali boys know how to have fun. Hahaha.

Where do you see yourself in five years?

Madison Square Garden! I'm just kidding. If I'm still in this band and having fun with the people I love like my family, then I'll consider myself one blessed motherfucker.

And finally, if you had a genie, what would you wish for?

Do I get three? Alright, well I'd like a Bugatti supercar, the guitar skills that Gio clearly got from some deal with the devil, and the chance to take the sun in a bag with me wherever I go. While I'm excited about taking our music to England, the thought of being there in the freezing winter scares me, hahaha.

Escape Artists Never Die were the North American winners of the Chaos Basement Jam Contest.

Ethan: Dude, that's cruel.

Zac: Ok...ok I was kidding. He doesn't have hairy toes. He's cool. Thanks though, I'm glad that comes across. We do like to have a laugh and just generally enjoy life and music. It's what is most important in life after all.

Alex: I concur, Cali dudes really do know how to have fun. Weed is like a second nature to us. Really looking forward to hearing you guys play, it's been a long time since a post-hardcore band really stood out from the crowd and impressed me, i'm taking your signing to Chaos as a sign that it could very well happen here! You seem like a cool dude, best of luck.
Wait.. R.L Stine influences your writing? Now I really am excited!

Zac: It's true. I meet people all the time who aren't from the west coast and they're all "do you really need that weed?" and I'm all "what do you really need oxygen? Same thing." Haha. Well we hope we can be those dudes who stick out man. We're like nothing you've ever heard before. For real, we hate the notion of ever hearing "oh yeah, you sound like..." It's my worst nightmare. And I'll definitely make sure to have some Goosebumps books in the studio now that I know it interests people! Thanks bro!

Meet the Bands - Number Two - Sonnets and Novellas
Interview with the band's Florian Lefevre

UserPostedImage
L-R: Loic Guerin - age 23 (Lead Guitar), Maxime Favre - age 25 (Bass), Florian Lefevre - age 23 (Vocals), Alexis Roussel - age 24 (Drums), Mathieu Briere - age 23 (Guitar)

Information

Band Name - Sonnets and Novellas
From - Marseille, France
Genre - Post hardcore/technical rock, progressive
Years Active - 2009 - Present
Members - Florian Lefevre, Mathieu Briere, Maxime Favre, Alexis Roussel, Loic Guerin

Welcome back to Triple Threat's Meet the Bands! We're here with Florian from Sonnets and Novellas. Hey, Florian, so tell us, how did you guys form your awesome band?

Bon entrevue! Hello! I just wanted to say first it is fascinating to be here in the USA for the first time. I am in awe of this country and the way it is so different to France. But yeah, mon excusé - your question; we formed like....hmmm....four years ago or so if I remember correctly from a sort of bizarre series of events. En Marseille there were a lot of contests for bands, but not a lot of great entries, so it was common for over time the bands to sort of scope each other out, you know, and the best members choose the best members? We were a band at first called Inside the Iceberg, and it was I, Loic and Mathieu, we are childhood friends. Sadly our drummer and our bassist are not good but one day we come across a band with a sick rhythm section. We....how you say....poached them? Not the most savoury way to conduct business, but we appreciate that dogs eat dogs, non?

So tell us a bit about the band in general?

We are a band that has learned a lot and progressed over time. You know, we started as late teenagers taking technicality and rudeness very seriously. We wanted to be this abrasive and persuasive band that people like because they're cool. Not a band that are cool because people like them. Over time though we have mellowed. It became, I am glad to say, more about the music and creating what we wanted to as a whole band, which has mae us a lot more confident and more worthy, in our own eyes at least.

You have quite a strange collective name, where did that come from?

A mutual love of the written word. I actually have a degree earned in the UK for studying English at a university in Scotland. It was all about literature, poetry and different kinds of prose. These were the two favourite kinds of writing that I discovered during my time there. Also they are cool words, and given that I take a lot of influence from writers, this made sense to me.

How would you describe your sound to anyone who has never heard you?

In a word, challenging. We have our own definition en Francais - we call it rocheballot. It means nerd-rock. We like to mess around with time sigs and pentatonic scales and stuff to create something that makes people sit up and say "wait...did they just do this?" We have energy and a high tempo a lot of the times, but this is a sound we have moulded over the years. It took time, but it is definitely a signature for us now and we are always told that there is nothing in the world like us. It's all twiddly riffs and high-pitched vocals.

And lyrically, where do you tend to go for that little bit of inspiration?

Haha....well, you know how earlier I say we are nerd-rock? Well I think this is a big part of it. I like to sing about sci-fi and space sometimes, and I also like to write songs that touch on literature from the past, be it French, English, classic American, Persian, anything. I actually had a period where I was high for a few days maybe....one year ago or so, and I spent like three of these writing a Dickensian album. Maybe one day I will release it. Yeah....my lyrics are weird.

What would you say is the one thing that endears you to fans the most?

I would say diversity or difference. There are two schools of thought in my own head. On one side of the coin...is this the phrase, non? Oui, well on this side, the rock community is the most welcoming and...open...in the world, you know? We take a lot of chances and do things musically that are strange but people are more open to that in alternative scenes. They like to see people doing something that comes across as taking a chance. The other face of this coin is....how do I say this? Everyone loves a cirque...a freak show, right? If we do something out of the ordinary musically then people want to see it, even if it is a car crash. Thankfully, it seems to most often be the former.

To date, how successful has your band been?

It depends on how you mean. If you are talking about sales, then zero, none, null, keine. We have one EP out there, but it was free. Live, though, we have managed to get a decent following. We are a different entity on stage. I come alive...people say I remind them of this guy from Weezer on speed. This is the greatest compliment of my life. Our music just works in the live arena. We have big choruses and great parts for people to sing and bounce to. We turn our shows into one big nerd party, and this makes me happy. If I go the rest of my career able to have bigger and bigger parties, I can slide off this coil a happy man.

So what made you want to enter the Chaos Basement Jam contest?

A lack of opportunity. I may sound a little....stand offish and "too cool for attending the school" at times, but we are musicians at the end of the day, and the truth of the matter is that we all want the chance to get out there and put our music on a pedestal, non? We are not too hipster to admit that labels are the only real way to do this if we are being realistic. We once had a negotiation with Métal Bleu in Paris, but this fell through. We felt this was a way to get what we needed, as well as allowing the fans to almost show us if we have a place in the world of music and such a massive industry.

Did you ever imagine you would win?

I must be honest, it was never even our goal to win this contest, I am serious with this assessment. Chaos Records is a massive company, and we did not think such a label would ever be interested in something so risky and experimental. We hoped to impress the fans, let them vote and show us we had at least a place in music, and then possibly we can pitch that to minor labels and go from there. As it went on though, things just snowballed and snowballed and before we know it, it's out of control. We got to the final and played the show of our lives for it. When I got the call, I was only just home from a night out and my English is.....rusty when I am tired, so it took a while to realise we have won. I was very happy though. We all are.

Looking forward, what are your big strengths and weaknesses headed into a pro career?

I would like to think our unique style and our unrelenting desire, along with our innovation will be our strengths that keep us going throughout our career. People may respect us for wanting to do our own thing and for being different. If you are different, you will always get a cult following. That's all we really hope for, and it would be awesome if that was the case. Weakness....well....personally I sometimes can come off as quite.....abrasive, non? It is not my intention, though. Apart from this, I would say there is a chance we will be seen as pretentious. We are not, it is just a passion for our music, but you can never tell how people will take to what you do, so this is my worry at the moment.

Looking forward, what is your biggest goal in life and in music as a band?

I would love to give you that big cool answer of "we want to be headlining festivals and stuff", but we are very much a feet on the ground bunch of guys, and we don't wish to get carried away. I think we would like to earn enough to be comfortable as professional musicians and to make people happy with what we do. If I am out and about one day, whether in Marseille, London, New York or wherever, if I see one kid in a Sonnets and Novellas t-shirt, then I am going to consider our band to be a success.

Well thanks for that, Florian. Now we want to know a bit more about you yourself?

Wow haha. Well that sounds like some fun, okay!

Favourite band?

That is an easy one. Coheed and Cambria. Progressive music, comic books. What is not to love, am I correct?

Who would play you in a movie of your life?

It depends what side of me your are looking at. Maybe this guy who plays Tom Zuckerberg? Jesse Eisenberg is his name. He's a bit nerdy and awkward in every day life, but let someone try to cross him professionally and he will show you his other side....his determination. He would suit Florian as a character really well.

Your favourite place in the world?

It is hard to look beyond home. Home is home after all. But I have travelled as well, and I loved Barcelona. I can go there and escape the tourists, but still find like an arty side to such a vast city. It has so much buried away beneath the Gaudi and shopping areas that are most popular.

Any tattoos?

Not yet. I really want to be inked up, but I worry too much. Not about designs or getting old and saggy, but simply because I fear that the artist I choose will be shit, non? I don't want to be walking around with shitty ink on me forever. Maybe some day I will drop this paranoia though and I can get myself some cool work done. I hope so.

Ever met anyone famous?

Not met, no, but just yesterday I was speaking on Twitter to one of the girls from Destinee and Adele. They are very famous back home, and she was very cool. It made me feel quite a bit less nervous about embarking on this career path to know that others from France have managed to make a big success of themselves, you know?

Favourite food?

I eat nothing but l'escargot and frogs, non? Hahaha, no I joke I joke. I will be the stereotype though and say that I love cheese. Brie to be exact.

Where do you see yourself in five years?

Like I say earlier, I don't like to plan too far ahead. I would love the chance to do a headline tour though, to have one or two albums out, and to be able to look back to this point and say to myself, "yes, you have done well, Florian. What else can we hope for but to be proud of ourselves?"

And finally, if you could have one superpower, what would it be?

I think everyone would choose invisibility. Even if they would not admit it....

Sonnets and Novellas were the European winners of the Chaos Basement Jam Contest.

Meet the Bands - Number Three - Miss Way
Interview with the band's Paige Williams

UserPostedImage

Information

Band Name - Miss Way
From - Auckland, New Zealand
Genre - Pop-punk/pop rock
Years Active - 2011 - Present
Members - Paige Williams, Logan Williams, Oli Halston, Caleb Turner, Manu Walker

For the final time, hello and welcome to Triple Threat's Meet the Bands! We're here for this last instalment with the lovely Paige Williams from Miss Way. Good afternoon! How are you?

Hi, and thanks for having me! I'm not too bad actually yeah. I'm a little jetlagged having flown from the other side of the world haha. But yeah, I'm holding up. It's nothing that a case of Red Bull and a few morning pancakes can't fix!

So tell us a bit about the band in general?

I think compared to the other guys in the competition, the other winners, we're quite new. We formed at the end of 2011 when my brother's old band broke up. The guys are all school friends and my brother Logan has known them all for years, so obviously I was familiar with them too. When they broke up, it was the time when Paramore was getting big, so I was like "Hey let me sing let me sing!" you know how excitable teenage girls can get. In the end, they let me try out for the band, and now here we are on a crazy crazy journey that we can scarcely even believe.

The name Miss Way, there's been some speculation over where that come from, can you shed any light on that?

It was all me I'm afraid! Guilty as charged. Like I say, my brother and his friends had a band before this one and they were called Fat Lip. I didn't like that though, being a girl and all, so I asked them to change it. At the time, I was 16 and I was obsessed with My Chemical Romance, or rather Gerard Way. So my high school books were literally covered in scrawling of "Miss Way," "Miss Paige Way" "Mrs Paige Way" and all that sort of crap. Because I'd come straight to band practice from school, my notebook was always lying around, and Manu suggested it as a joke at first, but the name kinda just stuck after a while.

How would you describe your sound to anyone who has never heard you?

It's unashamedly pop-punk, which I'm a little bit nervous about now, actually. The first two bands you guys had in here seem to talk about innovation and taking risks and being something like no one has ever heard. We're not like that at all (laughs). We play songs that will make you think of summer - it's the best way I can describe it. Our music is mostly happy, bouncy, energetic and uplifting. I think we really put the pop in pop punk, but it's a sound that we can make our own. The genre is roaring back, and we dream of being one of the top acts in that resurgence. So yeah...I'm nervous we aren't as high brow as the others, but I'm hoping it still works out - I'm confident.

Do your lyrics lie mostly in the traditions of the pop-punk genre?

Mostly I would say so, yes. I'm a teenage girl hahaha. Boys and stuff like that are still a big part of my life, and I've just left school, so I sing about what I know. It's important to have truth behind your lyrics, so I feel a lot more comfortable singing something about high school and relationships as opposed to trying to be clever and start mouthing off about things I don't really understand. You can get lost up your own ass by doing that. I mean it's not all heartbreak and broken promises. I have songs about friends, failure, success, everything. I don't limit myself, but it is definitely music that the standard pop-punk fan will easily be able to relate to.

What would you say is the one thing that endears you to fans the most?

If the guys were here, they would say it's me. Throughout the contest, every time we were voted through, the running joke was that it was because I looked hot in the picture Chaos Records used. I like the think there's more to it than that though. We have a lot of fans at home in Auckland, and I think they just love us because we are fun and down to earth. We take what we do seriously, but we appreciate that it's still about the enjoyment. No one in this band will ever be allowed to forget that. I think the fact we have our feet planted firmly on the ground will be our biggest strength that keeps us going as a band and makes fans come on board with what we do.

To date, how successful has your band been?

Mildly. Like I said, we have a lot of fans back in Auckland, but a lot of them are school friends and stuff who would always come out to see us, no matter what we were doing. It was nice to have that safety net, but it's nothing compared to what we will be embarking on globally now. In terms of recording, we've got a few songs on Soundcloud. But we've never recorded professionally before now, you know in a studio, so it's all uncharted territory to us. Relating everything we had ever done in comparison to this competition, then we've been mostly unsuccessful, until now...I hope....I hope I haven't cursed it....damn you Paige (laughs).

So what made you want to enter the Chaos Basement Jam contest?

Honestly, it was the belief we could win it and the incentives that we saw could come with it. Everyone's chasing that big dream right? I will never make a secret of the fact that I want to be a rock star. This contest was a way for us to get signed and start off along a path that will hopefully one day see us standing in front of full stadiums of people chanting our names. It sounds far fetched, but when you're filling in that online application for the first time, you gotta have a dream and this is ours. If we didn't believe we had what it takes to make it in this industry, then we would never have put our application in in the first place.

Did you ever imagine you would win?

Honestly? Yes. It sounds bad to say that, right? But yeah we seriously entered this competition with a goal of winning and we put all our energy into making sure our recordings and performances were as good as they could be. Every time the voting tree was revealed, we were top in our territory, so the more it went on and on, I would say we even grew in confidence. But yeah, we always believed in ourselves, and part of that was believing we had what it takes to win.

Looking forward, what are your big strengths and weaknesses headed into a pro career?

As I said before, I think our biggest strengths lie in the fact that we are just fun and full of energy. That sort of thing is infectious, and if you're happy and having a good time, it will catch on. We are also very confident and I think people who believe in themselves are just inclined towards success more naturally. If you think positively and always have the believe that something good will happen, it normally will. The weakness, I fear will be me. For every Paramore, you have a thousand Hey Mondays, bands with girl singers that are seen as nothing more than a gimmick because of the gender of the person with the microphone. I will battle my hardest to debunk this and prove my credibility, but that is what I worry about more than anything else.

You have the chance to debut a single in the next few weeks as well, how is that going?

It's finished and ready to go actually. Exciting times. Our single is called Chasing California. It's about a girl I used to know who wanted to be a Hollywood star and a big famous actress. I never knew what happened to her, but I'd like to think that somewhere she's still going after that dream. That's the sort of thing the song looks at. It's a really happy and cheery song. I have to say, I do love it. I can't wait to see what people make of it.

And finally, we want to know a bit more about you yourself?

Great, sounds like a laugh!

Favourite band?

Yeah that's still My Chemical Romance. They might have split up, but I love them forever, why else would I name my band after them? (laughs)

If you could have one wish, what would you wish for?

Oh my God, there are literally too many. I'd wish for success for my band, I'd want to have enough money to be comfortable, bigger boobs, a massive house. Who could choose just one? Hahaha.

Your favourite place in the world?

We went to Big Weekend in Sydney a few years ago as fans rather than as musicians, and it was the best experience of my entire life, for definite. It was just everything I could dream of, so I would say that festival is definitely my favourite place on earth.

Do you live the rock star life?

No no, I'm not much a drinker, and I've never really experienced drugs at all. When we come off stage, I'll have a beer or two, but never any more than that. It's important for me to keep level headed. I don't like the idea of being drunk and incapable.

Ever met anyone famous?

You're gonna think me such a nerd when I say this, but I met Gerard and Mikey Way a few years back at a show they did here. I was a total mess, screaming and everything haha. I was a total embarrassment when I think back to it now. I was young though....I'm sure I'd be able to keep my cool now...I think.

Favourite food?

I'm a pizza and burgers girl. Never fails to surprise people, especially on dates when they take me out. Am I gonna sit there and order a garden salad and water? Fuck that, get me a large burger and fries. Oh and I want bacon and cheese on that too. Hahaha.

Where do you see yourself in five years?

Top of the world. I have big plans for this band and I intend to fulfil them.

And finally, what would you be doing if you weren't chasing stardom?

I wanted to be a nurse when I was younger, and I certainly still have that option to fall back on if I have to somewhere down the line.

Miss Way were the Oceania winners of the Chaos Basement Jam Contest.

And that concludes our meet the band segment. Who is your favourite so far?
