The song starts off with a simple beat and within a few seconds a wave-like sound comes in just as Coke's voice comes in . Her voice is in a neutral , almost in a whisper like tone , and soft as she explains what she has realized from being in this relationship . Together the sound of the music and lyrics creates a mix of love & resentment . Once Coke gets to the second verse , she still sings in her neutral , soft tone , but you also hear a higher and stronger version of her voice fade in . Both in perfect harmony and they set off a stronger feeling as Coke explains how she isn't comfortable with the predicament this dependency is putting her in , how she doesn't trust it and then goes on to the chorus asking , " What did you do to me ? I used to be my own person ... now I'm dependent . " Right after she is done with the chorus the 2nd voice goes away and she is now singing the bridge in a stronger basically saying how no one ever plans things like this out , but it happens all the time , you just never notice . She goes back to singing in a soft tone in the chorus and you can hear the 2nd voice again . Once the chorus is done she sings the bridge again and ends the song off with the last high note with the rest of the music fading out .
