by Leland PoplawskiThe past month for Isaac Lovelock haven’t been exactly boring. The rapper’s newest role on television as a drug dealer in Ryan Ross Hernandez’s The Sweet Unknown debuted on FOX. A mix-up on Amazon.co.jp caused a mini-meltdown on Twitter and several other websites. The false tracklisting, as well as production credits featured a list of musicians including some huge stars. After all of this, he decided to make sure to leave no stone unturned with an exclusive interview with Spin.SPIN: Hello Mr. Lovelock.Isaac LovelocK (IL): How’s it going? SPIN: This is your first formal interview isn’t it?IL: Yeah, actually. I’ve done a few local ones, but this is my first publicized one. SPIN: So, to start off with the Amazon incident?IL: Oh man, it was actually really funny. I’m sleeping in on a Friday afternoon and my agent calls me , and tells me that I’ve got an album on the table with a bunch of big folks on there. I thought the whole thing about Scott producing was funny to me, I don’t think he even knows how to produce. Those features were really generic too in a way, not speaking on any of the artists’ abilities, it almost seems like someone took four or five real famous people and wrote them down. SPIN: Speaking of artists, is there anyone you currently like?IL: All my friends like PURE, but I just can’t get into them. (Laugh) It’s funny, because I listened to their new song, but I just couldn’t get into it. Other than that, I’ve been listening to a good amount of older stuff. Afghan Whigs, Pulp, that type of thing. I can’t really talk about Atlas, or Chloe, I work closely with those guys and to work that closely, you can’t have any doubts about their quality. The woman who did that new song, the one with that chorus, “A love so deep”... SPIN: Evangeline Wolfe?IL: Yeah! That song is pretty good. SPIN: On the debut album, you have been releasing singles for a period now. When do you think you’ll release a full-length album?IL: That’s a great question actually. That’s one of the reasons I came to SPIN today. I am currently working on my debut album, and I’d like to officially announce that. Earlier, I’ve never been working with the pace I’m going at now. I’m making the phone-calls, I’m finding the collaborator’s, and I’m in the studio. SPIN: How far are you into the album’s recording process currently?IL: The solo portions are well-underway. They have been for about two months now, and I’m also proud to announce another portion of the album’s release. I’m working on a partnership with VEVO for a series of Making Of videos to cover the album’s creation. I’m recording the first episode, and it’s crazy to be this far into something this big. SPIN: Any details on the album ready to be released.IL: Just one major detail. Other than that, it’s blank. An almost empty track-listing in terms of names and features. No art, no title yet. It’s the Blank LP for the moment. Once I’m deep in recording, I feel like the title will come to me, or I’ll see it and I’ll just be sold. SPIN: What’s that one major detail then?IL: Ah, yeah. I’m really proud to announce the first single off of this currently untitled album. I’m glad to share it not only with SPIN, but also the rest of the world. --- Title: Let’s Go Home Artist: Isaac Lovelock Release Date: July 16th, 2013 Production: Thank You Label: Studio60 Records/TricJam Records Overview: Let's Go Home is the first release from Isaac Lovelock’s debut effort and the first single off of the untitled release. The song covers his feelings on the current state of hip-hop and he said it should be taken as a mission statement for his album. SOUND:
Lyrics: I don’t evolve, I synthesize This life’s a journey, aim to mesmerize So when I say it’s my blood that ties Us together, it’s no lie So Rolling Thunder Hear My Cry Born to love it, And Still I Rise Born to love it, and still she dies … Rapped before but never like this So more than ever it’s hit or miss But fuck thoughts, I gotta go And fuck speculation, I gotta know This has gotta be post-drug rap Post-hip-hop, post-murder stats Cuz I pay my respects in dividends So the only thing this can do is transcend
Stop, go Stop, go Stop, go Stop, go
This rap game is a poor man’s slave trade Where these rich men stay made After this I just might fade Away into the grave that they laid Out for those who don’t follow The club-bangers and don’t wallow In my culture’s shortcomings So me, I stay running Until the day I could just fly But until then, I might just die And what will they say about me? “Praise Isaac, because he could see?” Six feet under, with a dirt obituary And enough disses that I can carry Caked in a casket, I could just sink But fuck, I might just make rap think
Stop, go Stop, go Stop, go Stop, go Into tomorrow … Into tomorrow
