Over NowOver Now is the second single from Sammy Griffin's debut album, Some Words I Wrote On a Broken Heart. Again, a very piano driven song with lots of folky elements which collaborate wonderfully with the Singer-Songwriter style that he plays wonderfully. Sammy hopes to replicate the success of his debut single Numb, which hit number 1 on Airplay and number 2 on Downloads, with this record.

I look back at our lives,
I miss the times when we were together,
I thought that they were forever,
But it’s over now.
Looking at my life through a photo album,
I now see the things I’ve missed,
The starry skies and your beautiful eyes,
And the lips I long to kiss.
At one point we were so happy,
But now I’m here alone,
Watching and waiting for the phone to ring,
And for you to come home…
I look back at the times,
I look back at our lives,
I miss the times when we were together,
I thought that they were forever,
But it’s over now.
Pictures tell a story,
A story that I’d forgotten,
Of the times that you were mine,
In a place long passed by.
I look back at the times,
I look back at our lives,
I miss the times when we were together,
I thought that they were forever,
But it’s over now.
DescriptionA slow piano riff gently introduces the song, and after 20 seconds of purely piano, the vocals come in. Sammy’s vocals are slow and gentle, and they softly caress the slow tune as it progresses, an acoustic guitar quietly introducing itself into the background, helping to build the song up slightly. The song progresses slowly and as Sammy reaches the end of the first chorus a gentle percussion sound begins.
With the introduction of the percussion, the first verse begins and Sammy’s gentle tone continues to caress the music. A slight tune on a harmonica adds to the backing of Sammy’s voice, playful enticing the listener to get more and more drawn into the song. Sammy’s lyrics are again about times gone by, and how he longs to be back in those days of old. The gentle tapping of the percussion builds up through the verse and as it gets around half way through the verse it does become louder, urging the song to pick up pace a little and for Sammy’s vocals to pick up also. Right on cue, they do; his gently whispers instantly becoming a beautiful projection, lifting the song into a slightly faster tune.
Sammy’s vocals end and the singing has a slight break for a few second while an intricate yet peaceful piano riff merges with a gently plucked guitar riff. The percussion is very soft at this stage in the song, but kicks back in again as Sammy breathes in again to start off the second chorus of the song. The guitar part becomes much faster and leads the chorus, the drum beat kicking up a notch and really helping to hold the beat of the song in place. His voice in this chorus is a lot more powerful and holds up a lot stronger than in the previous chorus.
The chorus slows to a stop, with only the gentle harmonica playing over the plucked guitar tune now. The piano has come to an entire stop as has the drum beat. Sammy can be heard to sigh once as the gentle music continues to caress the listeners’ ears. He takes another audible breath and exhales the first few words of the next verse. The piano quietly rises back into the song. His voice in this verse is very slow and drawn out, audible over the heart beat like drums which are pushing the song forwards. Sammy’s vocals do get louder again as he gets to the last line of the chorus.
Rather than there being another break, Sammy sings straight into the final chorus; his voice even more powerful than before. The guitar that is playing turns into a strumming pattern which increases the pace of this final chorus and makes it more climatic. The drum beat kicks in louder than previously, and the song reaches its final line and Sammy holds the final note. The music all dies out, but Sammy can be heard to keep humming the tune of the song for a further few seconds.
