TITLE: Black and White
BY: Adelaide "Ada" von Wannemaker-Hess
GENRE: Indie folk, alt-country, American Primitivism
LENGTH: 3:48
LABEL: Take Action Records
From the Upcoming Album: Make Believe

Ada jumps back into the music scene with the first single from her in several months, Black and White. For several weeks, Ada's name was constantly on the lips of fans and others alike as one event after another happens in Ada's life. She married the infamous Erich Hess in Japan in December - a secret that the couple kept for weeks before announcing it to their fans - and just recently announced over Twitter that she and Erich are expecting their first child in Feburary. Ada has always seemed like the total sweetheart that people instantly fell in love with, and it was easy to see how - after such a short courtship - Erich could put a ring on the girl so quickly (or, in this couples case, a tattoo. Each of them have a ring tattooed around their finger rather than actual rings). But, of course, there was a dark side to Ada. She admitted herself to a psychiatric hospital on January 1st (her birthday) for several events of self-mutilation and one foiled suicide attempt. Her best friend and husband's ex-wife, Erica Kobayashi, drove her and helped her check herself in. In recent months, more and more about Ada Hess has come out, making people believe that maybe she isn't the German sweetheart that everybody thinks she is. Constant feuds with other singers - especially with Nina Tarantino, also known as Rum from the duo Rum & Coke - have shown Ada's nastier side. But Rum isn't the only victim of Ada's temper. Neighbors have reported viscious fights between Erich and Ada where Ada has shouted in the heat of the moment phrases that you wouldn't say to your worst enemy. Although I'm sure the make-up sex is great, judging by Ada and Erich's improptu sex tape that they released and then auctioned off a couple months ago to raise money to support breast cancer awareness.

So what could be Ada's excuse for these angry outbursts and the impuslive behavior that she's been exibiting? Easy. Ada's illness. Several years ago, when Ada was fifteen, she was diagnosed with a personality disorder called Borderline Personality Disorder, or - as Ada has described it - "bipolar disorder, but on speed." The disease, as misleading as the name is, has nothing to do with split personalities or anything like DID (Dissociatve Identity Disoder, formerly known as Multiple Personality Disorder). Most patients with a Borderline Personality display tendencies to engage in quarrelsome behaviors in efforts to avoid abandonment, mood swings that could last several minutes to several days, recurrent acts of self-harm, disturbances in self-image, demonstrations in impulsive behavior (speeding, substane abuse, ect.), and viewing the world through a "black and white" point of view. Black and white. Sound familiar?

The song Black and White is not only Ada's first time to speak of her mental illness in a musical fashion, but also a "thank you" to her husband, who has helped her so much through her recovery process of the illness. For the some who do not know about Ada's mental illness, the song seems like just a whimsical song about the "powers of love and their ability to heal all," but to those who do know the inner struggle that both Ada and Erich have gone through to deal with Ada's illness, this song means much much more.

The is my first time dreaming in these hues
Everything I see is new to me
Oh, meine liebling
This is my first look from this loft height
Everything is shimmering and bright
Liebling, tonight

And you came just in time, just in time
To save this heart from black and white
And you came just in time, just in time
To save this heart from black and white

To tremble in my own, to brush my cheek and take me back again
Oh, meine liebling
And these are the first eyes to see beyond the blue
To make me calm and peaceful when I wake
Meine liebling, meine liebling, it is you
Oh, meine liebling, it is you
Oh, meine liebling, it is you

And you came just in time, just in time
To save this heart from black and white
And you came just in time, just in time
To save this heart from black and white

Erich: seems even more fitting Ada's favorite dress is....black and white. As always,Ada can craft such emotion into her songs. It's like she invites you into her soul for tea.

Erica: it's beautiful,Ada. The kind of beauty that comes out out of great pain. Thanks article writer for not calling me "Erica hess"!

Ada: A lot in my life has been black and white. I suppose you could say that they are my signature colors... besides red, of course. :) thank you, both of you. You are both so near and dear to my heart. :)
