Single : Money Makes Fools From Album : Epiphany Artist : Rum ( & Coke ) Release Date : August 12th , 2013 Recorded : June 24th , 2013 – July 31st , 2013 Genre : PBR&B Rap , Alternative Rap , Spanish Rap Label : Tric-Jam Records Written by : Nina Tarantino Produced by : NinaT and inZane Length : 3:44
Music Description A guitar starts off ' Money Makes Fools ' , as it's riffs fade in and out . It does this twice just before a bass guitar kicks in , really giving off that laid back feeling . The song itself is meant to be a laid back song , at the same time meant to get you to think back on your life . It shows just that when right after the bass kicks in , the intro begins with a sound clip from the ' Mercy , Mercy , Mercy ' ( 1966 ) cover by the Cannonball Adderley Quintet with Cannonball Adderley who says one line in a deep voice and fades out , echoing a little . In the original piece , it's longer , but the rest was cut out for the message that one line gave off . After the intro , the guitar riffs continue throughout the whole song . When Rum finally begins to rap , the riffs play out through the background and after the first few lines , another guitar rolls in . With the rap , the alternative riffs and the heavily influenced rock electric guitar , the song now gives off that perfect PBR&B feel . Rum's voice is in a laid back voice and every now and then she chuckles a little as she points out the stupid stuff she did , almost as if she was telling somebody a story . Everything continues as it is until the second verse . That's when the hip hop beat finally rolls in , now completing the PBR&B sound . The original riffs are now quieter than everything else , while the electric guitar is a little louder . The guitar is played in a complex way , more leaning towards the way it would be played if it was a guitar solo . Playing it is Zane Anoshkin , who is also producing this track , along side NinaT ( Rum ) , under the name of inZane . Unlike in the first verse , the second verse started to sound more like a rap . Rum presented the lyrics a little more complex . In the first line she dragged the words a little and in the second she said the first few words fast and then by the end of the line went back to dragging the words . In the third line she continued to drag the words , but in the fourth line instead of speeding it up , she simply put emphasis on | Gold Gang got us trapping | , and rapped without anything special | buying , weighing , and selling weed . | . Then in a somewhat monotone voice (Think Drake ) , Nina sings/raps | It was rough ... life was getting tough , | Mama and papa fighting over the bills and stuff . | All abuelita could do was pray for us ... | . Right after that everything stops playing but the riffs and a beat comes on as she starts to rap again in the lines | Set my stacks on the table , Ahora se acabo . | Mama screamed , " De donde has sacado esto ?! " | And when she gets to the | Abuelita shook her head and started to pray more | She goes back to saying it like she was telling someone a story , and chuckling a little . The same beat continues as the bridge comes in as she continues ' telling a story ' , chuckling at the realization of how stupid she was . But this time it seems almost like it is a clip of her actually saying that , and you could tell by the somewhat poor quality of the sound clip . You can tell it was probably out of an interview , because you hear a random man agreeing with her in the background . Right after that clip , Rum starts rapping again in | It took 5 bullets and 2 friends to die in front of me | Took way too long to have my own epiphany | and slows down near the part | Just so I could understand , que yo no corro por las calles ... The streets run me . | . And then in the hook , everything comes back on as Rum sings/say | They say money makes fools ... | What if you were already one ? | What does money do ? | Twice right before ending the song by fading out saying the words a few times | El dinero hace tontos | .
Lyrics Description In the song Money Makes Fools , Rum tells the crowd about her past and defends her present in an odd way , explaining how she was foolish before money and how she understands that ( Possibly implying money has made her a smarter person ) . She titled the song and uses in the song the old saying , ' Money makes fools ' , which means exactly what it says . Once people start making money , they forget their values , their roots and their common sense . Rum smashes this stereotype as she proves she hasn't done any of these . Just by overlooking Rum & Coke's career , you see that everything they have done has been what they wanted . They run the scene and reinvent themselves every project , not letting critics , record labels , publicists ... nobody , tell them what to do . They believe their only values are simply being their own boss and being in control of their own life at all times , and they have kept to that this whole time . She proves that she hasn't forgotten her roots because she even said herself that she was gonna use a lot of the songs on Epiphany to stay intact with them . And she even directly shows that by simply speaking Spanish in this song . All throughout the song she proves she still has plenty of common sense starting with the fact that she tells her life story , realizing how much of a fool she was . | Look I was ... 3 . Didn't know what I was doing | I was ... minding my business , and then he got shot in front of me | The chaos in Nina's like begins at an early age . She has never really opened up about much of her childhood to the public , but the fact that it starts this early , can only make you imagine what she has been through . | The cops asked ... me , " Que paso ? " . That's when I said , " Eu so falo Portuges . " | I was ... raised , loyal to the streets , so I beg the little boy to forgive me | In the next line Nina uses somewhat of a metaphor . She was only 3 and so she didn't actually know how to speak Portuguese , but she kept quiet about what she saw . Nina was raised in a family full of crime and resided in one of many bad parts of Bayamo where things like this happened everyday . So of course she was taught to keep her mouth closed , or at least that was what she picked up . By the next few lines , | Papa shook his head , Mama queria salir de Cuba ... with me | It made Nita think ... | Maybe the Q wasn't a good place to start a family | That's when she stared at me | You could tell either that's not exactly what her family wanted , or they were really concerned that their 3 year old daughter was already being exposed to the everyday crime in Cuba . Maybe it was a little of both . Then the song goes on to the second verse , with Nina skipping to when she finally made it to Canada and met Coke . Then she begins to explain her life in the trap business which , for the ones who don't know , is a nickname for anything street related that makes you money that you could end up either in jail or dead for . Funny they call it trap life , which is pretty much all it is ; a trap . She then goes on to tell the story of how her mom and dad found out she was dealing drugs . She wanted to help out with the bills because her family was giving themselves heart attacks over it . almost seeming like that was really the only reason she was dealing drugs . The song continues with a sound clip of something Rum said in an interview . It was pretty much all she had ever said on her past before this song . It fit well with the rap and also the next part , where she continues to open up about a lot of things that has happened . | It took 5 bullets and 2 friends to die in front of me | Took way too long to have my own epiphany | Just so I could understand , that I don't run the streets ... The streets run me | In the lines she rapped about her getting shot 5 times and 2 of her friends gettng killed . She explains that even though all of that happen she just went about , continuing to let the streets ruin her life , until she finally realized that , that was all it was doing . | They say money makes fools ... | What if you were already one ? | What does money do ? |
