AUBREY MIKKEL - "Ashes In The Rain" [Single]Aubrey Mikkel: "I have never felt this inspired in my career. All will see exactly why this is my personal testament as an artist on Novemeber 15th, 2013"
Last time we were here was on July 28th, 2013. The official single reveal of Aubrey Mikkel's first single taken from her sophomore album that is now slated to be released on November 15th, 2013. When we were last here, it was all about Victimized. The big question those few months ago was whether or not Aubrey Mikkel could maintain her popularity or as she would say her "victorious-ness" walking into an entirely new era for her music. As we said before, Aubrey no longer had the massive buzz following Starfactory to launch her new music but instead was starting fresh and quite frankly had some things to prove. Was her first album her last? Or would she go on to grow amongst the iconic figures that currently are off on break, recording new music or trying to make their comebacks. Alot was questionable walking into her first single from this album and to be quite frank, Aubrey did exactly as she wanted to do, which was prove that people still are interested in what she brings to the table, and whether or not you like her or not, the record became inescapable. After the record was released, it automatically became one of her most critically acclaimed records and went on to top charts, most notably on the airplay charts, accumulating a 530 million audience impact. Many critics found it to be a cooing ode to 90's R&B and others calling it her best record yet.
Since then, Aubrey automatically knew that although the first single had a great success, she also wanted to mirror it with the second release taken from the album. It's the final single before the album release and quite frankly it is yet another very important release for Aubrey, as we would believe that she thinks all of her singles are very important. Some people miss the fact that the first singles aren't always the most important for an album. You may easily make it past with your first release, but if the followup fails terribly at measuring up to the first, then it kind of puts you in a limbo so as much as we loved Victimized, it's always very interesting to see what else is in store. With no offense to Aubrey, when someone speaks a big game..they have to consistently stay afloat and sometimes go beyond to keep up with the game they are talking. When you speak a big game, people start to measure in on what possible failures you can make so they can dwell off of those mishap.
Mikkel has many people who would like to see her fail, and the ones, like her fans who understand what she is trying to do with her music. She has stated that she wants to create her own lane for herself musically and not be apart of what she would call "generic" artists. She looks to work in her own lane, and not be compared to any one else, and you can see her going that length from the very start of her career. Following Victimized, Mikkel has been involved in twitter disputes with artists like Stephanie Fierce and Barbarian, and people on the outside have quickly pitted them against each other, and when that happens, if you are in artist involved, you just might want to step your game up. In Aubrey mind, her game has been stepped up ..and once again, it makes us interest in Aubrey because you always begin to wonder what she might do next. Today, we have that answer.
With her album slated to release on November 15th, one of our main questions were: What is she going to release next? What will the follow up to the success in Victimized be? Aubrey is quite smart in her releases making us pretty interested in what she does. Yesterday and last week, without any previous word on a new single Aubrey began to hype a new record and even went as far as calling it a "monster". That only added fuel to the anticipating fans that have been anxious to get a taste of hearing this new single. Two months following the release of the first single of the album, On September 9th, 2013 [Today], we get exactly what we've been anticipating. A new Aubrey Mikkel record._______________________________________________________________ Ashes In The Rain - Single Reveal Genre: R&B, Hip Hop Release Date: 9/9/13 Label: North Hill Records Writers: Aubrey Mikkel, Atlas Producer: Jerome "JRoc" Harmon, Gia Rose Hilton, Aubrey Mikkel Brief Background"Ashes In The Rain" which features rapper Atlas is the second single taken from Aubrey Mikkel's soon to be titled sophomore album which is set to be released in the November of 2013. In classic Aubrey, she stays in the R&B zone that she has grown to be very popular in, but unlike Victimized, which featured a more calm approach where a story is being told from one point of view, that one being Aubrey's. With the new record Aubrey wanted to take a different approach. Not only with the initial sound of the record, but the story being told in the song as well. This time around, Aubrey wanted to really captivate the listener, really pull them on the first few seconds on the record. She wanted every beat to hit the listener heavy, every vocal to proclaim the listeners ear. This record is meant to be heavy and dramatic in telling the story that is being told. This record was recorded in Los Angeles, California with hip hop producer Jerome, "JRoc" Harmon and versatile music producer Gia Rose Hilton.
Aubrey felt that they would really capture the essence of what she envisioned for the song, and often went into the studio to tweak the production number that was being done in her presence. After the song was recorded, Mikkel knew that the story was perfect for a male rappers presence. Someone who could better convey the story or the songs message and what it is about. The record is not just the typical collaboration, but with Atlas's presence, he becomes the other side of the story. In this record, the male that Aubrey is speaking of is alive and well, and quite frankly fighting back. Mikkel knew Atlas would be the perfect person to put on the track and after working with the rapper on something else unknown, she invited him to add onto the record and that is where Ashes In The Rain was birthed. The song was recorded to be something captivating. The type of record where you can visualize what is going on in the song just by listening. The type of record is not cliche , but not too unorthodox-ed in lyrical content to the listener. The song was meant to make the person who is listening to the song in full, know what exactly went on by the end of the record. Whether is be the haunting manner of the record, or the emotional and feisty lyrical content. Either or, Aubrey Mikkel and Atlas have great chemistry together and made the perfect male catalyst for the song that will be the last single to be released before the album.Track Description The tracks proclaims the listeners ear right from the time the record starts. The menacing synths, mixed with a repetitive keyboard note and heavy backing piano notes sets the record from the start with a very intimidating tone. Two seconds into the record Aubrey is heard. Her vocal's holds a strong amount of pain and emotion that mixes perfectly with the relatively dark opening to the record. Aubrey singles out:I have walked through hell with bags of remorse, Drenched in sorrow,Broken to the core| I have screamed out your name and heard no reply|Stared at the Devil|And seen my own eyes|| Each line, Aubrey knows how to bring out the sadness in her vocals as she belts out the opening lines almost as if she feels deeply hurt, you can hear it the depth of her voice. Over the same menacing beats, Mikkel makes several metaphors, one having to do with walking through hell with remorse easily making the record seem regretful. She also makes a comparison with staring at the devil, but seeing her own eyes. Aubrey looks to be playing some what of the vulnerable, but wrong figure in her record. As she finishes has last lines, Aubrey waits a brief two seconds before she begins to sing the next lines of her song. After the two seconds, she begins singing again over the menacing record, this time, a quite high pitched synth instrumental is heard over on the song, that adds to the suspense that has already built thus far in the opening seconds of the record.
This instrumental could be compared to the sound used when building up suspense for something big about to happen in a movie. This suspenseful instrumental adds onto the already present sound of the song, and Aubrey continues to tell her story. She coos: I have been battered and bruised by the words that you say|Made many mistakes and many prices I've paid|I have wandered alone through the darkest of nights| Watched cupids arrow break in mid flight|. Aubrey keeps up the emotion that she did for the beginning lines of the song, for these lines too. These lines create some questions, she mentions that she has been battered and bruised by the words someone says. Who is this someone? She also speaks of mistakes she has made. As this story develops it becomes apparent that this is a serious breakup of two people.
After Aubrey sings those lines, the beat cuts down quite a bit. The suspenseful instrumental fades away and the piano and keyboard notes change in keys. This time, the keyboard and piano switch to a higher pitched key. The same notes in the pattern that was presented earlier on the song stays the same. Aubrey like before, takes just a couple of seconds before singing. When she does, she sings out: But now you’ve grown to hate me|You were the only one who ever could save me|Looking in your eyes will never be the same|. It becomes obvious that the female and this record had a nasty breakup with a male. She still holds onto the emotion in her voice that she has become known for. Aubrey continues on over the record, that now sounds as if it's building up. The heavy keyboard notes find's it way back onto the song. |I've seen our bridges and they're just ashes In the rain|They're just ashes in the rain|I've seen our bridges and they're just...Ashes in the rain!| Aubrey compares this to burning bridges, but the bridge is already an ash in the rain meaning their relationship is completely over. The song holds for a quick second with a piano note slamming down on the same note for an added buildup and after Aubrey yells out Ashes in the rain! The song bursts into an all out hip hop breakdown that may surprise some. The quick, gritty and sizzling beats become bouncy and in your face. It could easily have you bobbing your head.
This time, it's Atlas's turn to tell his side of the story. Over the bouncy, and relentless backing beat he unleashes his rap verse. He raps in response to Aubrey: Oh thought you would be comin' in |No, I guess we aint ballin' then|Now,|I try to look at good times; cant't see em|Must've been lovin' in the Colosseum|we ride chariots|No more merriement|Thought to marry you, I guess I'mma bury it|This is hurt when your heart broken|Burn it up so the loves smokin'|Its like we inhale it in our lungs|But you took the biggest hit and blamed me when it was done|I'm calling bullshit| Like when we say we'll call in the morning|Or that we wont fight in the mourning|Well now you know I aint morning you|I just hope in the morning you're mourning too|Can't even bare to see your face again\|I'm bare and I'm trying to find my place in the end|So I'm barely breathing as I strut to make my mark| We are gladiators fight to the death all through the dark;} Atlas does the perfect job of playing the other side of the story. He shoots down what she says and uses metaphors to get across their current relationship, one quite frankly, severed. When Atlas finishes his verse, Aubrey comes back in. The beats are still bouncy but the the keyboard and piano notes are adding in with the beats creating a great concoction of sounds. Aubrey then sings: I’m swimming against a tide that flows back to your heart|You told me you loved me but lied from the start|I have flown out the nest before I could glide|And when I fell, you just left me to die| Aubrey continues emotionally: |I'm holding my heart as it crumbles to sand|Watching my soul in the palm of your hand |I became so weak the day you stopped fighting|When we let go I fell but you started flying.\
As soon as Aubrey sings those lines, the song returns back to the high pitched notes that were heard earlier as she starts the line "But now you’ve grown to hate me". Aubrey seems to want the boy back, but cant stand him to bring herself to that point. The song then builds up once more, and then breaks into the bouncy beats where Atlas comes back in with another fiery rap verse. He aggressively raps over the beats and severs their relationship on his part. After the hip hop drop, the song moves into it's catchy bridge, where shaking beats are heard with quick synths. Aubrey sings over it where she finally admits her love for him. She murmurs: And it’s hard because I love you more than ever\And it’s hard because I know you’ll find your way|But how could it be our love keeps casting shadows|This pain we feel will|slowly fade away|It will slowly fade away....| The song then returns back to the keyboard notes with the backing beat as Aubrey sings for one last time over the menacing and intimidating sounds: But now you’ve grown to hate me|You| were the only one who ever could save me|Looking in your eyes will never be the same|I've seen our bridges and they're just ashes In the rain|They're just ashes in the rain|I've seen our bridges and they're just...| After about 8 seconds of the backing beat, instrumental the song finally comes to a massive end.
Aubrey Mikkel tells a story with Atlas about a severed relationship in their dark serenade of a story. The second single taken off of Aubrey's new single has officially been unveiled.
