GIRLSPICE LIVE ON RADIO 1 WITH SCOTT MILLS And we've currently got three out of four of the GirlSpice ladies in the Radio 1 studio with us now, Chantal, Sophia and Kimberly, hello! I'm trying to contain my excitement right now.
All of the girls are heard simulatenously greeting Scott.
Sophia: Awww! You're cute, babes!
Where on earth is Nadia?
Kimberly: I know, right? It's totally not cool when the four of us aren't together, but whatevs, dude. We're gonna have to make do today! She's currently on tour, doing amazing. It finishes next weekend, so she'll be all ours soon!
Sophia: Yayyyy!!
Chantal: Isn't it great? Us three are slaving away on these promo stops while she's living it up on stage every other night. (laughs)
So of course, the album is out next month, but we'll get onto that in a moment. "Rebel" has become another huge hit for you girls, why did you decide to go with that for the first single?
Kimberly: We just wanted something that was MEGA loud and very pop, something that sounded like it had no f's to give. It's such a big track, and opinions are very divided, but that's the whole point, and we like it that way. Booyah.
Sophia: It's a great, great, great dance track though, Scott! You can like... totes move and workout to it too! We love it! Hehe!
And you ladies put on a show-stopping performance at the VMA's with the song. Congratulations on a successful performance.
Sophia: Thank youuu!!
Chantal: Honestly, wrecking each set and just causing chaos is a lot harder than you think, but it was so much fun. After becoming a mother, I think the media expect all the fun to be sucked out of your life and for you to behave extremely serious all the time, but I just felt so alive on stage that night. It was fabulous, I'm glad you have good taste.
You're so well known for your huge shows, are you girls going on tour for this album?
Kimberly: We're not thinking of a tour, but we wanna go down the festival route more this time. Fetivals are uh-MAZING, and something I've always wanted us to do as a group, cause we don't do them enough. Hopefully there's some upcoming ones we get to perform at, cause that'd be rad.
Tell us about the album title, why did you call it Make a Scene and who came up with it?
Chantal: It's actually used in one of the lines on "Rebel" and it just kinda stuck with us. It described the in-your-face nature of the album, it's very hard-hitting and unexpected for a GirlSpice record. We'll definitely be making a scene with it.
Kimberly: I mean... hello? How can we not? We've got Stephanie Fierce and Blood of Wecz on there, sh... is insane.
Yes! Tell me about those collaborations, what was it like to work with those and what can we expect on the songs?
Sophia: Stephanie is such a sweetheart! Like OH MY BLONDE, she's just so cute and such a hard worker! I look up to her, babes! The song we worked on is just like... totally high energy and fun, it makes me dance! Hehe! I mean... Stephanie is an amazing, amazing, AMAZING dancer, so we had to kinda do the dance song of all dance songs, right? She's super glamorous too! It's like wow... babes! We were like, we totes have to get Stephanie on this! It'd suit her so well! And we did! So yayyy!
Kimberly: I FANGIRLED to hell and back when I found out Blood of Wecz would be interested in doing a song with us, you have NO idea, like damn. Anyway, that song is the most experimental GirlSpice have ever done, I listen to a lot of heavy stuff, so I guess I was able to bring in my own tastes and kinda give it a slight pop, mainstream twist. But like, we're definitely not watering down that Blood of Wecz feel, it's still a real deep track and you hear screams in the background, all that good stuff, you'll be shocked, fo real.
How does this album compare to Night Rider? I mean, that album was huge for you as a group.
Chantal: It's WAY more diverse, Night Rider will probably go down in the history books because it was such a successful time for us, but this new album is a lot more risky. And... well, yeah, you'll hear it for yourself, won't you?
Kimberly: We've kinda experimented with so many different sounds on this new record, whereas the last album was, for the most part, strictly a dance record. We've got even harder dance beats on a few of the tracks on this record, so no fear, you can still get CRAZY to this one. But we're also doing a few new stuff, some more mellow indie-ish ballads, the Blood of Wecz song which is like... more alternative, so yeah, it's all really ESSITING.
