Their ninth studio album is out now in stores, please welcome iconic girl group... GirlSpice!
If I'm not mistaken, this is your first interview as a five-piece in a while, right?
Kimberly: Yeah, man. It's totally exciting, it's been such a long time since the last record, so we're really making the most of this time now. It's awesome.
Nadia: I feel like a bad parent, because I've been busy with my own tour, so I haven't been able to take part in some of the stuff the girls have done while I've been away. I felt like I was neglecting them all. (pulls a sad face)
Sophia: Awww!
Chantal: I just feel sorry for your other guests, because it can get a little crazy backstage with the five of us.
Sophia: We totally make a scene, babes! Hehe! ... Our new album!
Yes, we'll come onto that now. What took you ladies so long to release this new album?
Chantal: Well, Jimmy. I know no one would know if they didn't already, but I was busy having a child!
Kimberly: LOOK AT HER BLOWING HER OWN TRUMPET.
(Nadia bursts into laughter)
Chantal: Hey, I worked hard to get this figure back, thank you very much.
Kimberly: What to the ever.
Sophia: Sooo silly! But Jimmy! We've been like... totes busy, babes. Like, I had my own album, which was soooooo much fun! Like, wow! And then Chantal was having a little baby boy! Awwww! And Nadia was busy being famous! And Kimberly... well, I don't know about that one, babes.
Kimberly: Partying is a full-time job, FYI.
Sophia: Jimmy, have you seen my unicorn? Soooooo cute, right?
Jimmy stares blankly, before breaking out into laughter with the audience.
There's never a dull moment with you girls, is there?
Sophia: Super cute! Hehe!
Nadia: It's definitely because we don't see each other often enough, so when we get back together to do promo, it's just this burst of energy. Trust me, if we had to do this everyday, we'd be at each others throats. (laughs)
Chantal: Pretty much.
So, Nadia and Sophia, I know you both went onto do your own music. Kimberly and Chantal, would you ever release an album of your own?
Kimberly: I don't think that's for me, really. Being with the girls is where I'm most comfortable. Some people just don't have that desire to go solo, and that's me, basically.
Chantal: What she said. I know there's a huge demand for an album of my own, but yeah... sorry, guys.
Nadia: What makes you think there's huge demand, sweetie?
Chantal gives her an evil look as the audience and Jimmy laugh.
Nadia, I understand you're working on a new album. What about you, Sophia?
Sophia: Not like... right now, Jimmy babes! But defo a new album will be made at some point, the first did like... sooooo much better than I was expecting! So yeah! Hehe! Fun times!
Back to you girls as a group, when can we expect you girls out on the road again?
Nadia: We're not touring the new album because of other commitments that we all have, we don't really have that amount of free time. But we're definitely looking to do some festivals, so hopefully you guys can catch us at one.
Your new album, which I've actually heard, is an excellent club album. But it's got a few odd ones on there, how did that Blood of Wecz collaboration come about?
Kimberly: Well, me and Nadia especially have always been big fans of the guys, and we were brainstorming ideas for the album and who we could get to feature on it. So I just came up with the guys there and then, and we all wanted it to happen. Nadia's friends with Scott, so we thought it'd be best if she asked if they'd be interested, and they were. Fangirl mode was later activated on my behalf. (laughs) They're like, the best band ever, duh.
Nadia: I can be very persuasive when I want to be. (winks)
And you worked with Stephanie Fierce on a big hit that's topped the charts for two weeks, what was it like to work with her?
Sophia: Stephanie! Babes! We love you!
Chantal: We've worked with Stephanie in the past, she's just a really talented girl. Like, there's so many talentless people out there, but she really shines through them, it's why she's been around for so long.
Nadia: Stephanie's a total pro, she knows what she's doing and so do we, so we were able to make just a great pop track and go crazy with it. We've loved her from day one and have always supported her, she actually opened for us on a past tour of ours, so it's funny to see how far she's come. We'll always be supporting talent like her, she's great.
You girls have been in the industry for such a long time now, what do you think is the secret to your longevity? Especially with girl groups, you constantly see them come and go, right?
Chantal: Definitely, which isn't any fun for us! Cause like, who doesn't want a bit of competition to put to shame? GirlSpice as a group have always taken risks, we've always done daring stuff and changed it up with each record, so I think that's the key to success. Just keep it fresh. Don't be boring, don't be stale, don't embarrass yourselves.
Nadia: I think trust and a strong friendship is really important too, like, you couldn't be in a group with four other people you despise, you know? It doesn't work, it comes across as fake when you pretend you're best friends on stage, people see through that.
As a group, is there anything that you still want to achieve?
Kimberly: Daaamn, that's a hard one! What about winning Best Album at the Chaos Awards or something? That'd be rad.
Sophia: Or having our own brand of candyfloss, babes! Or like... water!
Chantal: Water?
Sophia: Water's good when you're thirsty, Chantal. Gosh!
Nadia: You couldn't have thought of something like, I don't know, our faces on a Pepsi can?
Sophia: Stephanie Fierce already did that! We're original! Hehe!
(Chantal rests her head in the palm of her hand, the crowd and Jimmy laughing once more)
A pleasure as always, girls. Thank you! |
