Billboard : Let’s get down to business. Who exactly is Lotus ?
Lotus : Lotus is a spontaneous ball of awesomeness who at the moment is having an identity crisis because she's torn between being a hipster and being a thug . Kind of like a 4 year old trying to decide on if she wants to be a princess or a fairy .
B : Hmm , couldn't she just be both ? It's possible . The world has witnessed it before .
L : Ah , see , now that's the thing . She is both a fairy and a princess , but when it comes down to putting a label on it , it always amounts to ' the fairy princess ' or ' the princess fairy ' . She doesn't know which one she likes better to make it her default and the other , the other side of herself .
B : I see ... [Laughs] You know , this off the back intellectual conversation about fairies , princess' , hipsters and thugs really does prove your awesomeness .
L : Bahahaha , I know !
B : So , in your blogging days , we really got a good insight on the true you . So did a lot of your fans . We asked them all yesterday , ' Give us one hash tag to explain what you're first impression of @LotusFlowerBomb ' Do you mind if we share one with you ?
L : Go on ahead . I wanna see how interesting this gets .
B : Mkay , so the first one we just had to share with you because we wanted your response is this one : #RoleModel .
L : [Immediately bursts out laughing] I am ?!
B : [Laughs along ] We think it was reference to your first post .
L : Oh ! Well then s*** , it's true ! One of the few to actually wait to do the nasty until I was of age , out of my momma's house and financially stable to raise a child . Air five to whoever sent that !
B : Big air five to @CakeLikeMe
L : ... Or they were just being sarcastic ahahah !
B : [Laughs] Ok , so moving on . Tell us a little about Lotus before fame . Models are notoriously known for being long which is perfect for an athlete . Did you play any sports growing up or was there just Malibu Barbie’s dream house ?
L : No to both . Growing up , I dressed like a girly girl but I had the mindset of not caring about my looks ... or my health [Giggles] . I was , and I still am , lazy . But I never did like Barbie like that . The only time I played with baby dolls was when I wanted to make them fight . Just threw them around the room and whoever landed on top the most , won .
B : Hahaha , OK . You seem to have a lot of confidence in yourself and what you choose to do . Were you always that girl who knew her worth and wouldn't let anyone tell her anything less ?
L : Well actually , growing up , until I knew my environment and the people I was dealing with , I was actually kind of quiet . I never was that one girl that seemed like she had it all together and she made sure you knew of it by using her words to break you down . I'm not even mean . I don't pick fights ... but I frequently have the dire need to finish them . So in a way , I guess I was confident because I wanted to make sure that no girl ever stepped on my toes or tried to break me down . I'm still the same way today , set up like a mouse trap . Try to take my cheese and I'll snap on your ass [Chuckles] . But at the same time , I still have some humility .
B : Hehe , I see . Ok now let's talk about something uplifting inspirational [Laughs] . Do pretty girls really need to be told that they're pretty or beautiful from a guy ?
L : [Laughs] Hmm let's see ... No, as long as you know and believe in yourself, no man’s words should change anything. At the end of the day they are words and you have to look in the mirror and see it yourself … people can tell you how beautiful you are until they are blue in the face, but it won’t mean anything unless you know and believe it.
B : We're pretty sure you're approached by guys all the time . Tell us the worst pickup line you've heard ?
L : The worst pick up line I've heard is “ Can I have a quarter ?! I need to call my Mom and let her know I just meet the girl of my dreams . ” Like , we were seriously in the middle of a dance floor and this fool thought those were the words that were going to make me tackle him down . I just had to laugh . Not in his face though , that would've been mean .
B : [Laughs] Wow , haha . And the best ?
L : ” Will you walk down the runway and marry me ? ” One of my followers had commented on a picture of me catwalking . [Snaps and laughs] Touche , that was funny as hell .
B : [Laughs] We feel like no one asks this but how does it really feel to have 5,892,012 followers ?
L : And 12 ? Well damn , you guys have it down to a t [Laughs] . Uhmm , I guess it's nice . I've never really thought about it .
B : OK , so no more stalling . Let's get straight to the point . Lotus the gang member turned blogger , turned model , turned ... wait for it America ... RAPPER ! Lotus , why have you been hiding this from us ?!
L : Bahahaha ! I was just biding my time . Gotta make the right moves and jump on the boat at the opportune moment , you know ?
B : Yes , we understand all of that Lotus , but this single right here is just crazy . I got to listen to it as a perk of this job and I can already see big things in the future for it .
L : Aww , thank you so much !
B : No , thank you ! This is what a lot of female's raps have been missing these days and I just know millions will love it . Tell us , why release it now ?
L : Well you know , I feel like I'm at a point in my life where I can say the things I said in the song . I'm just at a level of maturity and independency right now and I was getting tired of seeing all of these basic rappers just destroying rap that I felt like it was my duty to do something . [Laughs] But seriously . So I said to myself , ' Self , ' and then myself said , ' What self ? ' And I was like , ' I'm feeling good today . Let's go to a studio and see where it heads us . ' and so yeah , here we are .
B : [Laughs] Yes , here we are . What exactly is ' Leader Of The Pack ' about and what is it's meaning to you ?
L : Hmm , well it's basically about exactly why I am deciding to become a rapper . You know , what I just said before . That was the meaning to me . I'm at this level in my life where off the back , you should know I'm a leader and you should definitely listen to what the leader of the pack has to say .
B : There are a lot of things said in this song , before everyone else hears it for the first time , describe your perspective of it .
L : The song says everything and I hope the bits where I explain myself reaches out to every incompetent mind out there , but just to make sure , I'll quote it . ' This isn't a dis , the drama is old . ' Which means , I'm not trying to disrespect everyone who fits the ... descriptions in this song , because drama in Hip Hop is so basic nowadays . It's not just because you don't like someone anymore , but just because you want some attention so you throw random shade at 85 different people and hopes that at least one of them takes the time of day to respond . That's not what this song is about , it's definitely not attention seeking song . I just had to get some stuff off my chest in one rap .
B : Speaking of shade , #1 there was shade in that and #2 there is some potential shade in this song [laughs]
L : [Laughs] OK , I admit , I did throw some shade at Kendrick Lamar just then , but me and Kenny are friends ! I just used him as an example . But he doesn't need to attention seek either . He's already got it like that . And yes , I threw some shade at the queen of shade haha .
B : [Laughs uncontrollably] Kenny ?! I cant ! And I thought so ! What exactly has been going on between you and Aubrey though ? You guys haven't in some time , but you used to get in Twitter disputes frequently .
L : [Laughs along] Yess ! We tease each other like that . Lord , I don't know . She just got mad over me pointing out that mess of a dress she had on at that awards show . Not my damn fault you wore s*** made out of a deerbra and thought no one would notice .
B : BAHAHAHA !
The Breakdown
It's almost been half a year since Hollywood has first fell in love with Lotus the flower bomb . Within such little time she has quickly spread her name across the public after first being casted for a reality show . Once she kick started her modelling career and got big enough solely off of it , she pulled out of the deal and went on to receive spots in fashion shows , a few videos and a couple of photo shoots ( featuring in ' A$AP Rocky Rocks the Boat ' in GQ magazine ) . Now she has dropped news that she can rap and with that released a single ! When we talked with her aside from the interview she said , " This is just something I did for fun , but if it's called for , I will definitely make this into a career . " If you ask us here at Billboard , we won't be surprised if people are banging her door down and stalking her , just to let her know how " called for " a future rap career for her is .
' Leader Of The Pack ' isn't just another one of your typical respect me ... please ! songs that rappers continuously release . It isn't another I have swag tune or as Lotus describes in this song , a " ringtone rap " . ' Leader Of The Pack ' is a reassurance of what was established long ago . Sarojini ' Lotus ' Lui is a boss . " Yours at that ! " , she says with a chuckle in a radio interview not so long ago .
The song not only has a good vibe to it but at many points in the song , she makes many punch lines that the world so desperately needs to make trend so we can become a better place . This stuff is just gold ! She puts Juciy J's ' Bandz A Make Her Dance ' to rest as she pulls her independent card out saying , | I don't dance for bandz , I dance because I got em | and puts all these girls who still think ' twerking ' is cute with the lines , | I'm a true female , I don't need a man | But you can go ahead , keep twerking bitch ! | and more . To top it all off she stated | I'm being cliche yet I'm killin' these rhymes | which she actually was . And that was just the first verse ! We are absolutely loving the way she pulls out the Chinese now and then in the first verse as well . Little things like that really does make all the difference when a single puts out there who you are .
In the second she completely went O-F-F on all of the rappers who aren't taking their sweet precious time at killing the rap industry . Of course she had to start it off with , | This isn't a dis , the drama is old | and then later on pull out another punch line saying , | I'm just saying , respect is given if you respect yourself | . One of the most notable things she does is spell a few words and then says , | Oop , let me stop . | Some of you bitches can't spell , I guess I forgot . | . You just can' help but to giggle a little when you hear those lines . Maybe even a little " Ooh , kill 'em ! " slips out of your mouth right after . That's what we did ! She even drops a few vocabulary words on us . She had us all on dictionary.com , making sure she knew what she was saying . We were studying those context clues and everything !
Lotus definitely dotted her i's and crossed her t's in this one . Everything about this song came perfectly together and we here at Billboard love it , which is why we agreed to release it here for her . There are so many good things about this song , but the highlight ? Though it's the title of the song , she only called herself the leader of the pack once . Billboard definitely feels like that's all she needed .
